The Immortal Queen

It has been nearly 30 years since I entered this unholy pact with Energen, the pharmaceutical company that has basically taken over Britain (thanks to me). I was finally at the end of my life, glad to forget this world and rejoin my husband in death. And then Charles decided to divorce again and remarry an imbecile. She would have made being Queen a joke and I'd worked too damn hard for that to happen.

So there I was on my death bed knowing my son would tarnish my life's work and I couldn't let go. Energen saw an opportunity and they offered me a trial run of a new medication. I needed to stay around just a little bit longer, perhaps the first mother in history to aim to outlive her son, so I took it, and lived. Months turned to years.

There was no way in hell I was going to let Charles be in charge of this castle. The House of Windsor had no say over laws anymore, but I had done a marvelous job of turning this post into the perfect soapbox against the many ignorant Prime Ministers elected. I would say I never understood this country's desire to eliminate the monarchy, but then I looked at Charles and God knows I can’t blame them.

Alas, he finally died and I was ready to pass on the torch. But Energen had other plans. I had become too good a soapbox and they wanted me to be their advocate. They wanted to keep me around and they forced me to continue taking their medication under threat to my family. At first Energen's success story in me made them popular, in fact it was because of my extended life that they became the behemoth they are today.

But it was all too good to be true. The world is suspicious now. I don't blame them. They'd be stupid not to be. I became suspicious myself over their ultimate plan and their need for my involvement. And today I met her. My clone is currently holding a fancy little pistol to my head. She looks so much like me that no one will know I died, but at least that will save poor William yet another dreaded procession through London.

I wish I had seen that cloning was their ultimate purpose. Apparently I'm not the only world leader on their list. So as the American's say "The shit just got real". I wish I had the strength to fight back, but honestly I'm ready to let go. If Energen goes through with its plans, my family will all be joining me soon anyway. It’s unfortunate that the world will think it’s me paving their way to oblivion, but to hell with it. In this last moment I hear the words that I have dreaded for the last 30 years, but welcome the irony in them now.

    "Long live the Queen!"
