The Demon in Me

Introduction

I’d like to think I’m a pretty bad demon. You know, I’ve sinned a lot. I killed quite a few people. Once, I even made a priest rape and kill like twelve kids. My latest job should’ve been easy enough. I was supposed to ruin this girl’s life until she, you know, offed herself. Mortal sin that bad would send her right down to my boss and he’s always looking for recruits.

Except something was going very wrong. And not in the good way.

Chapter 1

My assignment was a normal twenty something college girl. She had a normal, loving family with normal supportive friends. Her grades were average. She didn’t stand out in a crowd, but it wasn’t like she was invisible. It should’ve been easy to destroy her.

I started with her grades. I caused her to flunk all of her important tests. She didn’t have the energy or drive to write any of the major essays. She’d scoff at concerned professors.  In the end, she was flunking out of school. But it wasn’t enough. I needed to thoroughly ruin this girl. So I focused on her friends next. She stopped hanging out. She stopped texting. She started hanging with the wrong kids (kids I very much connected with.) Eventually all of her friends abandoned her. I can still remember the crying. Oh, the crying in the middle of the night was my favorite part.

Lastly came her family. They were pretty easy considering she was flunking out of school and all of her friends had abandoned her. They blamed it on her. It was all her fault. Slowly her parents started to bicker about who was to blame for their daughter’s sudden decline in life. No one could understand why a perfectly normal, happy girl just decided to ruin her life. The crying became more frequent and I was right on schedule. Any day this girl would climb to the top of a very tall building and jump. That’s my favorite one.

Chapter 2

Then something mind bogglingly annoying happened: it got better. She flunked out of college, she had no friends, and her family had practically disowned her. Instead she soldiered through it and then she started writing. Her writing caught the attention of a publisher. The publisher sold millions and millions of this girl’s book. She was wealthy. Then, her family coughs up that she was adopted and her birth family is more than willing to love her. Her friends all returned and even more joined them. Eventually she fell in love, got married and had a kid.

By all accounts, the best thing that had ever happened to her was me, a demon.

Can you believe that?

Every time I tried to destroy her, something infinitely better replaced it. It just wasn’t fair. But I am not giving up. I will ruin this woman if it is the last thing I do.

You want to know the kicker? The title of her book?

The Demon in Me.”
