Chapter 1

[ taped underneath a desk during second period English, Anberlin High School ]

Victoria:

My name is Holden. You may know me, or maybe you’ve never noticed me. We’ve gone to school together since freshman year, but I don’t think we’ve ever had classes together, and when I see you in the hall, I can never really get your attention.

Is it too presumptuous to say you’re pretty and I want to talk to you?

I heard that you and I have the same English teacher, but when I asked her what period you’re here, she sort of sighed and told me not to bother you. She wouldn’t really let me ask why; she just said that you don’t have the time for immature boys and relationships.

That’s okay, though. I’m fine with just being friends with a pretty girl.

I’m sort of lonely, and you never talk to anyone. Has anyone ever tried to talk to you via letter?

Write me back if you want.

Chapter 2

[ taped underneath a desk during second period English, Anberlin High School ]

Victoria:

I noticed you curled your hair today. All the girls were talking about how pretty you are and how you should always have you hair like this. Honestly, I like it no matter what. I especially like when you where that nice black hat you have. I don’t know if you’ve worn it lately, but I like it.

Anyway, write me back if you’re bored. I know that big test is coming up, so if you need a study buddy… you know. Or we could do it via email or whatever. Whatever you’re comfortable with.

Chapter 3

[ taped underneath a desk during second period English, Anberlin High School ]

Victoria:

I’m not sure if you’re getting these notes. Miss Lim told me again to not bother you, so maybe she found these notes? Yikes. Let’s hope not. Even though I don’t have anything to hide.

I just feel like it must be so lonely not to talk to anyone. I don’t know why you don’t talk, but I’m pretty sure you’re not mute. And you always look like you’re thinking so much about everything. So, I guess I just wanted to say that if you need a friend—even just one to talk to in silence—I can be that.

But anyway. You don’t have to talk if you don’t want. I’ve been known to talk enough to keep myself entertained.

Hope you’re doing well.
