Freedom Of A Ship

They sped towards an island that Aria had long ago marked as their first destination. The ship's speed made it that whenever they reached the tip of a wave it seemed they flew for the shortest moment. The salty air filling their lungs as they sailed. The feeling of choosing wherever they went. Only the Sun and compass to guide them and the wind behind their backs. The sleek hull slicing through the water. Everyone cheered as they saw the island pop up in the distance, just as the Sun reached the midday mark. Their angles and directions were perfect. With that they waited. Finally the ship grinded to a stop on the sandy shore and Henok quickly heaved the anchor up the beach and set it safely in the ground. With the ship docked they could finally search for their new camp. Everyone walked around searching for the best spot to set up the camp site. "Quickly over here!" came the shout from Henok. Everyone rushed over and when they got to the small hill upon which Henok stood they saw a neat little cottage nestled against the hill. "Who’s going to knock..” said Aria but Archie was already running full speed down the hill. Everyone quickly tailing him. Archie sharply tapped the door frame and they waited for a response.

Freedom Of A Ship

Henok rushed to the sails. It wasn’t a large ship, but they told the ship maker to make it small. They only had a small crew. As the sails flew up Henok tilted their angle so that they would catch the best part of the wind, and the best speed. Max took the tiller at the back and set them off. “Where do we go” shouted Max over the tumbling waves. “There’s a small island that was found south, I think that would be a fun place to visit” replied Aria excitedly. Max pulled out his compass and moved the tiller changing their course to the south. Henok changed the sails with the movement of the ship. They sped on the waves. At the top of each wave they seemed to fly a small bit. The wind was in the perfect position for speed. The little craft sped faster than any normal sized viking ship, and they liked it that way. When the Sun was just under the midday mark they saw their destination. The small island popped up upon the far horizon and they all cheered for their first successful ship sailing. All the coordinates were on point and Max's steady hand on the Tiller allowed them to be on a perfect angle towards the land. "Look!" Souted Aria and pointed just above the island and they all saw a small wisp of smoke rising, almost invisible in the bright sunny day. Everyone was filled with curiosity at the sight and everyone felt helpless at the feeling that they could not go any faster. When the Sun began to dip underneath the lip of the horizon their ship grinded to a stop on the sandy beach of the island. They quickly went to search for the smoke's source. Finally a call from Henok alerted them all "Guys you might want to come to me,". They all walked over and when they reached Henok's poin they saw a small cottage nestled in the side of a hill. "Who's going to knock?" Asked Aria. Before anyone could reply Archie was rushing down the hill. He sharply tapped on the door frame and waited for an answer. For a second nothing happened, then the door opened to reveal a face, the age much like their own, staring at them.

A New Friend

The door opened to reveal a youthful face around the same age as their own. Everyone was taken aback all thinking in their heads that it would have been an old hermit. “Who are you” said the stranger obviously suspicious. “We are new vikings, we just tested our newly bought ship” stated Max proudly. At the word viking the stranger looked up. “Who are you” returned Henok. “I am Ben, I.... am just a.... lonely hermit of this island.” Replied the stranger. “How did you get here? I see no ship” asked Aria. No response came and Ben’s face was a blank canvas. “Ok,” said Aria a little concerned. “Would you like to come with us. We have room on our ship,” said Max and everyone voiced their agreement. “Ummm.... but...” said Ben, “But what?” Asked Archie once again concerned. “Nothing I would love to come! But first let’s enjoy some food, it’s the least I can do when you can bring me.... home,”.

The food was great. After spending a life cooking for yourself, it would. The vegetables were cooked well and the meat was delicious, juicy and tender. Though everyone focused on the food they all thought about what Ben had said. If Skandinavia was his home then what was he doing here and most of all, how did he get here without a boat. The island was easily 20 kilometres away from their home land. With no explanation they continued to eat and start idle chatter between them. Ben said how he used the every tree on the island for his house and was using any dead bushes he found for cooking and heating. “Wow. I just realised we never introduced ourselves. I am Aria. Him over there is Henok.” Aria states pointing a finger towards Henok. “This is Max” she said and pointed to Max sitting next to her. “And that’s Archie” she said pointing towards Archie sitting next to Henok. They all waved as they were introduced. Ben took close attention memorising the names and faces.

After they finished their food they took their plates and cutlery and scrubbed them clean in the ocean, which was just a few meters away from the house’s entrance. As they cleaned it Henok was assigned to check the boat and make sure the anchor was still holding in the sand. He strolled through the night, walking over the small rolling hills. When he came to the ship he checked the anchor and then boarded the ship. He checked their oars, the tiller, their onboard food. When he got to the prow of the ship he took a second to breath the fresh and salty air. He looked towards the rolling waves and looked out. He could have sworn he saw a scaled back arc out of the water like a serpent’s. It seemed to roll into the water and it soon got thinner until it came to a whip thin end. Henok turned around thinking that his eyes were playing tricks upon him. What he didn’t see was a blue scaled sea serpent head rising out of the water ten meters away, eyes a glowing green and teeth like daggers.
