Chapter 2: Intruders

Heavy footsteps sounded above the boards, then another pair of feet entered the house. Blaze recognised the first heavy tread as Marthen’s, but this time he must have brought backup. Blaze feeled around the dirt walls of the small room until he felt the opening to an even smaller tunnel smaller tunnel. He had built it in the case of the situation at hand, but it was so small he could hardly crawl through. Marthen wouldn’t be able to follow him through such a small tunnel. He grabbed a rather large pouch of coins which layed on the ground, under a stray board, and began to crawl through the small tunnel. “He went down there!” Came Marthen’s voice, anger clear as ice. Blaze slid his arms into the tunnel and pulled himself along. He heard pounding as the hatch resisted the force of Marthen and his friend. Blaze crawled faster, his knees and elbows scraping along the edges of the tunnel. Just as his shoes had vanished into the deep shadow of the tunnel he heard the lid of the hatch collapse inward with a shattering crack behind him. Blaze moved even faster, crawling through the tunnel on his belly. Finally it began to slope up, and the roof opened up to reveal the night sky above him, glowing through the tangled branches of a bush. Gripping his bag of coins in satisfaction Blaze climbed through the bush and ran off to his other small camp he had made just in case. A grin spread along his face, for he knew he was too smart to be caught.

Marthen fumed, he reached desperately into the tunnel, hoping to catch Blaze’s leg. But he had disappeared and the sound of himself shuffling down the tunnel was fading fast. “Damn!” He Yelled in anger. Marthen flipped the bed and tables looking for any amount of money, anything to pay for what he had lost. That golden royal was his weeks pay that he got from his father, and Blaze had fled successfully with it. He even had the guts to wait so that Marthen could see him as he vanished into the crowd, as he always did. Thinking back Marthen realised he had started their fued, years ago, but he quickly I pushed the thought out of his mind. “He took it too far,” Marthen said to himself. “What?” Asked Hearth, Marthen’s companion. “Nothing, Blaze got away, again.” Replied Marthen. “Let’s go.”

Chapter 3: Testing

Blaze lined up quietly, cautiously trying to be hidden in the line and not draw Marthen’s attention. Blaze drew up the cowl of his hood, he was grimly aware of the fact that Marthen was not far behind, but Blaze managed to get up in the middle without anyone noticing. The line moved rather fast, children being sent back, heads hanging low with disappointment. Some even came crying. The Tester was in town. She was a magic user herself, and as her ability allows her to test if anyone has magical potential, or bloodline running through their veins. Before this sudden breakthrough was made in the Academy, people could live their lives without any idea of their true potential. The line moved even further forward. The King had made it so all fifteen year old able bodied children would have to participate in the testing, a hefty fine would follow if they didn’t show up to the test. The children who were found to be magical would be sent to a training ‘school’, of sorts. It was Calle the Academy and it’s main purpose was to help find the children’s powers, unlock and sharpen their  abilities. Every child was told this when ypthey were young, it was like a true fairy tale. Because of this, everyone knew a person could have only one power, they were born with it and couldn’t choose their power. It was something that they couldn’t have a say on. It wasn’t like a fairy appeared and asked you what you would like. Blaze looked up from his thoughts and found himself second in line. “No, move along. Next!” Said the woman sending another boy home disappointed. She was brutal and blunt, moving with precision and speed. Blaze moved up, “Your name?” Asked the woman. “Verin,” Replied Blaze without hesitation, using the name everyone knew him by. The woman crossed off a name on a price of parchment. Reaching up she placed two fingers on each side of his head and closed her eyes. The veins in her arms started to glow with a bright blue colour and the path took the colour up to her finger tips, where it went into Blaze’s head. He could feel something scanning the inside his mind. Her eyebrows came together in a furrow, and the glow pulsed through her veins. Suddenly the woman’s eyes shot open, “You, young sir, are a magician.”
