Chapter 1

Lexi's POV

"Hey " my boyfriend - Ryan - whispered in my ears after wrapping his arms around my waist from behind me.

"Hey Ryan" I replied with a smile as I turned to face him.

We were currently standing in front of my locker on the first day of school. We were finally seniors.

He brought his lips down on mine and kissed me like he had been waiting a millennium although we had spent hours together yesterday.

"Congratulations" he said happily after we both pulled away " We're seniors ".

I was going to reply to him but was cut of by two people screaming and coming towards us.I saw my best friends Crystal and Riley coming over with huge smiles on their faces.

"Omg! Can you believe it ?! We're finally seniors!! " Crystal screamed practically bouncing up and down.

"Yeah I know! Finally! " I said as I gave them both a hug each before turning to Ryan." So I'll see you in class " I said giving him a peck on the cheek. "Sure" He said before heading off towards his friends.

After a few minutes, we heard the five minute bell ring so Riley, Crystal and I headed off to our respective classes. Turned out I had a couple of classes with both of them and Ryan.

"Hey Lexi! " I was greeted by Craig who was Ryan's best friend.

"Hey Craig" I replied with a smile. Craig was pretty nice to me and my friends. It was always fun to have him around.

The last bell rang and the seats that were empty were now filled with the students who had just got into the class.

That's when the teacher cleared her throat to get our attention.

" Good morning class! My name is Ms. Rebecca Brown and I will be teaching you'll Biology for this year. Since today is your first day I will not be starting the class but there are a few things that you'll should know if you'll plan on staying in my class..."

For the rest of the period we sat there listening to her lecture us about the rules and regulations set for her class just like how any other teacher would do. Lunch came by quicker than I expected it to.

As I walked into the cafeteria with Riley and Crystal who had met me at my locker earlier I saw Ryan sitting at a table near the window with his friends. As soon as he spotted me he raised his hand and motioned for me to go and sit with him.

As soon as I reached his table he immediately pulled out a chair from the other table and set it beside him, gesturing for me to sit. God this boy is so sweet!

"Hey baby, how was your day so far? " he asked me.

"Pretty good "

We all started eating while laughing and joking about silly things.

"So Lexi, you going to the party tomorrow? " Will, another one of Ryan's friends and kind of my friend asked me.

"What party? "I asked him. No one told me about any party.

"It's just Matt throwing a party because his parents are out of town " Ryan explained.

"Oh, well I don't know if I want to...." I trailed off. I mean I wasn't a big fan of parties because there's always alcohol and once people start drinking, the party becomes a mess.

"Oh come on Lex, you have to go. I mean you wouldn't want to be the only one whose not going now would ya? " Crystal said with an eyebrow raised.

"Wait..even you're going? "I asked surprised, because along with me Crystal and Riley never liked parties. Well, I guess opinions change.

"Yeah and so is Riley " she said.

I turned to Riley to check if Crystal was joking but no, I was wrong. I sighed.

"Ok I guess I'll go." I muttered in defeat cause knowing Crystal she'll actually leave me and go.

"Great! " she exclaimed.

We went back to eating our lunch and soon it was time for the bell. We said goodbye to each other and went to our respective classes. I waited for Ryan to offer to walk me to my class or something as he always did that but was disappointed when he didn't utter a word. He didn't even give me kiss or even a hug. Weird. I walked to my class confused.

I had gym and boy was I glad that Riley had the same class. I wasn't that good at sports. Well its not that I hate it but I don't love it either whereas on the other hand Riley was a pro at anything that had to do with sports. So she always helped me. What can I say.... I have great friends.

We headed to the locker rooms and changed into our shorts and t - shirts and then proceeded to run laps. And just like that gym passed by.

The rest of my day was uneventful and soon I was in the parking lot waiting for Jake, my twin to show up. I was waiting so bad to get my own car .Usually its Ryan that drives me back home but he said he was busy . It's not that I don't like riding with Jake but it would feel nice driving my own car.Unlike most elder brothers, Jake was always helpful and caring to me. Not to forget protective. Overprotective.

I was leaning against the passenger door of Jake's Civic, listening to music when I saw Jake walking out of the science wing with his friends. He said good bye to them and walked towards the car.

"Hey sis! "He greeted me.

"Hi Jake "

"So how was your last first day of school? " he asked me.

It took me a while to realise that he was saying that this was the last time its going to be the first day of SCHOOL, cause next year it'll be first day of college.

"It was fine. How about yours?"

"Well it was going pretty well....but having to drive 'you ' back home is kinda changing my thoughts about it" he said playfully.

I punched him lightly on the shoulder and got into the car.

"So, where's Haley? I expected her to ride with us."I said referring to his girlfriend.

"Her friends stole her away from me "he said grumpily.

I laughed. "You're whipped bro!"

"Hey!" He said pretending to be hurt but soon joined me.

We drove home while humming to the tunes playing on radio. We both had the same taste in music so that wasn't a problem.

As usual we went home to find it empty. Mom's job needed her to keep moving around the world. So it was pretty much me and Jake living there. After I had a shower I went to the kitchen to get started on dinner. There's another good thing about Jake -- he can cook. Like really well.

Together we made our dinner -- steak and Jake's famous sauce to go with it. We sat at the counter with our plates in front of us.We started to eat our dinner when the home phone rang.

"I'll get it " Jake said as he got up from his seat.

"Okay "

"Hello?" he said after answering the phone.

"--speaking "

"yes.."

"--what happened?"

I couldn't hear what the other person was saying but by the way Jake's expression was changing I guessed it was something bad. So I got up and went to stand next to him.

"Okay...thank you "

He put the phone down but didn't look at me immediately. I touched his arm to make him look at me and when he did my heart broke. He looked so sad it killed me.

"Jake what's wrong?" I asked him softly.

He didn't say anything, -- just looked at me with tears forming in his eyes.

"Jake...." I was whispering now." Please say something, tell me what's wrong?"

"Mom....." was all he said.

"What? What happened to mom?"

He just pulled me in his arms and held me tight. I didn't know what exactly happened but I had a strong feeling of what it was and I hoped so much it wasn't that. I wrapped my arms around him and held him equally tight.

He wasn't answering me so I pulled back and looked him in the eye.

"Jake....please tell me what happened. Please.." I pleaded with him.

"Lex, mom..,sh-she met w-with an acc-accident and..." he didn't have to complete his sentence for me to know what happened after that.

The thing I feared the most ...

My mom was gone. Dead. I was never gonna see her again. Hug her. Hell even get shouted at by her!

At that moment all I could think of was my mom. Why? Why did it have to be her? I could hear Jake calling our my name but I could care less about that right now. My legs gave way and soon I was on the floor crying like it was the only thing I remembered how to do.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around me and pulled me into his chest. Jake. Oh my God. I don't know what to do. I looked up at Jake and found my heart break all over again because of the look he had in his eyes.

We sat there on the floor just crying in each others arms, one trying to comfort the other but it didn't change the fact that we were hurting so badly. I don't know how long we stayed there before Jake opened his mouth to say something.

"We have to go to the police station." He said.

I didn't say anything -- just got up and walked out of the house. He locked the door behind us and walked towards the driver's seat of his car.

We drove down to the police station and we had to get all the formalities done because my mom was not staying with us permanently. We were told that some stupid drunkard was driving in the wrong lane and my mom had to swerve to her right to avoid crashing into that car but she went crashing into a tree instead and since she was on the highway the impact with which she crashed into the tree was horrible.

*******************************

I didn't go to school for the next few days but my friends came by one day acting all sympathetic and shit. I didn't need anyone's pity or sympathy. What made me even more sad was that not once in these days did Ryan come to see me. He didn't even call, he only kept sending me texts and those also were becoming rarer by the day.

Today was the day of the funeral. Everybody was coming. Family, friends, mom's colleagues. And dad. Out of everyone he was the only person I didn't want to see. The only person I was scared of seeing.

I was dressed in a black dress that fell right above my knees. It had lace sleeves that came till my wrist. Chrystal and Riley were in my room while I changed because Chrystal said she'd try to cover up the bags under my eyes and make my face look like a face of a living person cause honestly I looked like a walking corpse.

"You ready?" Jake asked, standing by my bedroom door.

(Past...)

When I was about 13 years old, all I would say about my family was -- perfect!. My life was awesome and I had parents who loved eachother as well as me and Jake. But all that changed when one evening my dad asked me to go to a party with him.

As I was a 'daddy's girl ' I agreed immedialtely. I wore on my favourite blue dress and asked my mom to do my hair for me. The party was not at all what I expected to be. I expected a nice, sophisticated party but what I found was drinks, drinks and drinks. I got scared and clung to my father like my life depended on it.

But he didn't act like the man I knew, he was different. He was drunk and scary like everyone else around him. Then he started doing something that I would never have imagined he would do -- especially to me.

He started taking of my dress -- in front of everyone. When I tried ti pull away, he slapped me across the face so hard that I almost fell. Actually j would have fallen if his grip on my hand was not so strong. I could feel something warm dripping from the side of my mouth. But j paid no attention to it. All I could think of af that time was to get out of there. But how? So I did the most obvious thing, I tried to run, I don't know what had gotten into me but you know what they say - fear and panic can get you to do anything. I kicked him where the sun didn't shine and ran for my life.

I could hear him calling out my name in anger but I didn't - no I couldn't turn around. I think he was trying to run and get hold of me but his injury didn't allow him to. I continued running till I could see the safety of my house.

A fresh round of tears fell out as I ran to the front door and pounded on it till either my mom or Jake opened it. My mom opened the door, I knew it was pretty late in the night but my mom was waiting up. She pulled me into a hug as soon as she my tear- stricken face and started stroking my hair. She pulled me over to the couch and asked me what happened and where my dad was.

As soon as she mentioned my dad, I started screaming. Because of all the noise I was making Jake got up from bed and came down. As I saw him I got up from near my mom and ran over to Jake who was already waiting with his arms open. He started rubbing my back in comfort. We went together and sat on the couch next to mom.

Mom tried asking me again about what happened but I refused to open my mouth. But when Jake asked me I immediately told him what had happened at the party.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Lexi's POV

Man, that's one night that will haunt me for the rest of my life. I do t know what Jake did or rather what happened between him and Peter - that's my father's name - but Jake sure as hell made it very clear that Peter was not to see me again. Unfortunately there was nothing he could do about today because as far as I know Peter was still married to my mom. Thankfully Jake and I were already 18 so we didn't have to depend on or move in with my father.

But now, I was freaking out. Big time. I was gonna have to be in the same room as him. All through he would be standing just a few meters from me.

All four of us went down together. And as soon as we reached the last step, my eyes scanned the room for two people - one who I intend on staying far away from and one whose comfort I longed for - my father and the other Ryan. But I was disappointed both ways, because first, I couldn't spot Ryan anywhere and second, my father was making his way towards me and Jake.

As soon as I saw him I moved behind Jake and held onto his arm as tightly as I could. Seemed like Jake spotted him at the same time because he got his arm around me and pushed me behind him like as if he was shielding me.

By this time, Peter was standing in front of us with a smile plastered on his face. No, I did not make a mistake there. He really was smiling. Now that just made me hate him more.

"Hey kids!" he said cheerfully.

"Don't call us that. You don't deserve it." Jake said in a low voice.

You know what my dad did? He laughed. He laughed out loud.At a funeral. My mom's funeral. His wife's funeral.

"Oh Jake.. look at you trying to act all grown up.... Don't even think you can tell me what to do and what not to do young man." We waited for him to continue," And Lexi my darling," I flinched when I heard him call my name." We never got to finish what we started that evening..maybe one of these days- "

"Don't even dare to say the words " Jake said using the same tone he used before.

"Oh please..." he said sarcastically.

"You know what..?" Jake started. " How about you just stay away from me and Lexi..?I mean you can stay until the ceremony is over but after that j want you to leave. I will not have a man as cheap as you under my roof for long. Is that clear? " By the time he finished his tone was menacing.

"Your roof?...yeah, your roof. " Peter scoffed.

"Yes my roof. In case you forgot, this house belonged to mom, and she left it for us so that makes it our house now. And I have every right to kick you out right now." With that Jake turned and started walking so I followed suit. But before I could take more than two steps I was stopped.By my father. His hand was on my arm.

I could feel my heart thudding in my chest. My palms were getting sweaty and I was sure that if his hand was in contact with my skin for even a minute more I would faint. But before I could let that happen, I was pulled away by someone and pushed into someone else's hands. It was Jake who pushed me into Haley's hands. She held me tight as I started to cry. Even though she was the same age as me, she always felt older and I looked at her like an elder sister.

Although it was that only that one night, it made a huge impact in my life. I will never ever be able to forget the look that was in his eyes that night. Even the thought of it made me shiver.

I was so lost in thought that I didn't realise Jake was in front of me until he called out my name.

"Lex! Lexi!" he snapped his fingers in front of my eyes.

"Huh?!" I shook up.

"Are you okay? " He asked with concern lacing his features.

I just stood there looking at his face for a minute before moving forward and hugging him tightly. He hugged me back with the same amount of force. After some time he pulled away.

"Where is he?" I asked with a shaky voice.

" I told him to leave." he replied. " Do you want to go rest for a while?"

I didn't trust my voice so I just nodded." But I don't want to be alone."

Before he could say anything, Haley cut in,

" I'll go with her. " she said.

Jake nodded while giving her a grateful look. I knew he was worried about me and wanted to come upstairs instead of Haley but he had to stay down because of the guests that had come.

******

Jake had finally convinced me to go to school with him. And now, I was sitting in the passenger seat of Jake's car, debating whether or not to go inside. I was scared to face eyeryone in school, I didn't want to be made fun of just because I lost my mom. It was creepy. Coming to Ryan, I didn't know what to make of our relationship at this point. He didn't come for the funeral and to make things worse, he didn't even send me a text.

"Lexi...don't let those people keep you from going to school and attending classes. Who knows they might treat you like nothing ever happened." Jake said in an exasperated voice. Well I wouldn't blame him, I mean we have been sitting in the car from the past 10 minutes.

" Fine, I'll go." I finally gave in.

We got out of the car and walked towards the school building. And turned out Jake was right. None of the students gave me weird looks and they didn't start whispering behind my back. Infact they were all smiles and greeted me cheerfully. I tried to smile back at as many people as possible, cause that's what I decided to do..try to get back to my old self.

Jake went off to meet his friends but not before making sure that I would be alright. As soon as I entered the building, I heard Chrystal call out to me. As I turned I noticed that Riley was also with her.

We hugged each other and as I pulled away I asked them,

"Hey, did you'll see Ryan anywhere?"

They just looked at me and shrugged. I guess I'll have to wait till class to meet him unless he meets me at my locker or something. I was acting like it was fine but this - his behaviour - was really bothering me.

Anyway the three of us kept talking to eachothrr about nothing in particular when I felt something - or rather someone - bump into my shoulder.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.." I heard a voice say from behind me.

I turned around and stared into a pair of piercing green eyes.

"I'm sorry" he said again while bending down to pick up his books from the floor.

"It's okay, no problem" I said with a smile.

He stood up and offered his hand to me "I'm Colton,Colton Williams."

"Lexi Evans" I said shaking his hand." I haven't seen you around before, are you new?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Yeah, I just got in three days back" he said " Anyway, I've gotta go, I'll see you around?"

"Sure, see ya."

I turned around again to find both my friends staring at me with their mouth's hanging open.

"What?"I asked them

"Nothing, nothing." They said immediately closing their mouths.

We walked to my locker and while I was collecting my stuff, I heard someone come and stand behind me.

"We need to talk."
