Chapter One

The booth was empty excluding me. Jenny was taking her sweet time meeting me at the cafe. I was playing with the straw in my mouth and swirling the coffee in my mug. I checked my watch.

1:17 pm.

It's almost been twenty minutes. I took the straw out of my mouth and let out a deep sigh. I knew why she wanted to meet me, she wanted to break up. I wasn't the most attentive boyfriend to her. She seems to have finally realized I just wasn't interested.

I decided to just leave. I left a tip along with the bill and got out the booth. Jenny probably planned this as her way of telling me it's over. Honestly, I'm glad.

Jenny was popular but not as popular as me. She had her own group of blondes, synced in everything but secretly hating each other. I hated Jenny. I checked my phone in case I got any texts from her.

Nope. I felt a grin form on my face. She's finally gone from my life. Her only goal was to try and get me to sleep with her. I knew from the start she only hooked up for that. The only reason I agreed to go out with Jenny was because I knew she was desperate for me.

Not for my looks or personality, it's because I was the school's heartthrob. That's what all the girls do. They try to have a good time with me but it's all the same. They don't even put that much effort in anymore that it's grown sad.

I texted AJ to see if he was up for skating around. We've been friends since elementary school. I remember on the first day we showed up with the same outfit and ever since then we've been inseparable.

I took out some gum and waited for his reply. My phone chimed. He'd be at the town center in five. I popped my spearmint bubble with my finger and waited.

After what seemed like forever, AJ finally appeared in my line of sight. He was in his usual baggy hoodie and sweatpants. He was chewing on some black licorice he stored in his hoodie pocket.

"Want one?" he offered.

I gave him a disgusted look. "I'll pass." He shrugged and ate another.

"So what's up?"

"Well Jenny finally gave up after what seemed like forever."

He smirked. "Why do you even put up with all these girls? You know they're gonna break up with you anyways."

"Meh," I started to walk towards the cafe again. "Do you wanna get something?"

AJ kicked up his board and nodded. Underneath it was the symbol of his gang. A fist with a bloody red knuckleduster. He joined the gang three years ago, right when we entered high school. I didn't know why. He never told me anyways.

The booth I was sitting at was cleaned up. Jenny never showed. AJ took a seat there, sliding his board next to him. I followed. A barista came over to us and handed us menus.

AJ ordered his usual, a chocolate sundae without the cherry on top and an iced coffee. I got another cup of black coffee and a brownie. AJ put in his earbuds and started bobbing his head to his music while texting God knows who.

A few minutes later our orders were done and AJ took out his buds and started to mix the banana with the ice cream. I just stared, yet again disgusted by him. His head started bobbing again as he took his first bite.

"It's good," he says with a full mouth. "Thanks for treating me."

"Who said I was-," I stopped. He probably didn't have money on him anyways. I scoffed and took a sip of my coffee. It grew quiet once again.

"I'm gonna go to the bathroom real quick."

I nod. AJ got up and headed towards the door. I went back to my brownie and coffee while I listened to the jazz music playing in the background.

Suddenly, three loud bangs were heard. I shot my head up and looked behind me, only to see a masked man start shooting at random targets. I stared with wide eyes. This could not be happening.

His gun was aimed at me. It felt like everything was going in slow motion. I could see the bullet travel it's way to me and hit straight between my eyes.

After that, all was black.

The jazz never stopped playing. The barista never made it back to the table for our checks. Poor AJ was in the bathroom the whole time. At least he was spared. That's all I could think about with my last few moments on earth. They weren't all that bad.

Chapter Two

I opened my eyes. It was a bloodbath. Dead bodies strewn around the room. I attempted to lift my arm to see if I was alright.

No...

I couldn't move. My body wouldn't listen to me. I tried to make a sound.

"Help..."

I could hear sirens in the distance. Moments later I saw men with guns bust down the doors and rushed to the carcasses.

"Help..." I tried again. One man was checking pulses. He looked me in the eyes as he bent down to check me.

"They're all gone," he said to another cop.

"I'm alive...stop..." I barely managed to say. This time I willed myself to get up. Slowly, I got my head off the floor and soon my arms. I stood in the cafe, but everyone was ignoring me.

"...shooting at a cafe...town center...no survivors..." someone said into their radio outside. Just at that moment, one of the cops in the back started yelling.

"I found one! He was in the back!" He came out with someone covered in a towel. I couldn't believe it.

AJ. As they walked by me, I saw AJ look at my feet. I also looked down. It was me, with a bullet between my eyes. He got free from the cop's grip and bent down to meet my dead face. I saw tears streaming down, then a muffled sob. He pulled my head up to his lap and hugged it.

"Will, please, wake up," he cried, rocking back and forth. I wanted to tell him I was right here but I couldn't. It wouldn't be of any use. Nobody could see me.

I realized I could float. I made my way to outside the cafe. There was cut off traffic from both sides of the street. People were taking videos and trying to see inside. Others were crying, most likely they knew one of the victims. What about me?

I looked at the huddle of crying people. Nobody I knew was there. My parents probably didn't hear about it yet. Nobody but Jenny and AJ knew I went to the cafe today.

I turned back to the cops. They were desperately trying to find some leads as to what happened. I was the only lead but they couldn't see me.

Then I saw him. One of the cops was looking straight at me. I looked behind myself to make sure. Nothing.

The cop started to make his way towards me. He didn't waver his eyes from mine. I knew he saw me. I opened my mouth to say something but was cut off by him.

"Lets make a deal."
