Introduction

1801, London, England

I was heading off down main street, thinking about how my little brother would probably be a little upset that I had left him at home, as he was only 2 years younger then I was, and thought that he should be allowed to come with me. I however, had argued against it. What I did to make money was dangerous, and since Mom and Dad were both dead, I had been doing my best to look after him. However, that was easier said then done, as he was a very independent 12 year old and had more energy then a puppy. My thoughts were interrupted when I bumped straight into someone, who growled in protest. Focus. You'll have time to worry about it later when you aren't busy working with demons. I shook my head to clear it, and proceeded to cross the street to get to the building that I was to meet The Reaper.

Supposedly, he was one of the most powerful and scariest demons, and I was almost too keen to believe the rumors and stay away from him. However, my boss, The Magister, wanted to make a sort of deal with him, supposedly, to discuss the issue of certain shipments that The Reaper wanted secured. I was, of course, chosen to discuss said shipment with him. Now, I was not easily scared, nor was any of this stuff new to me, as my boss had deals with many demons around the city and was famous for "making deals with devils." but I was more than willing to believe the rumors on this occasion because even my boss seemed to be a little scared of him, which was good enough reason for me. I arrived at the abandoned house, an old two story Victorian which seemed on the verge of collapse, which did nothing to calm my already frayed nerves.

I took a deep breath, and stepped inside. I heard voices coming from the second floor, so I mounted the very rickety staircase, and headed upstairs. I immediately saw that the rumors had been, for once, an understatement. The demon itself looked surprisingly human, with piercing blue eyes and dark hair, however, it's when I heard it speak that I noticed how truly inhuman it was. It had a very soft, hissing voice and didn't even seem to be moving it's mouth. "Ah, finally. I have something I need you to do."

Chapter 1

    2015, Near Portland, Origon

So, as I'm sure you're wondering at this point, I'm Nolan. I am tall, have dark brown hair and eyes, and am fairly skinny, although past experience has made me quite decent in a fight. I didn't have to work today, so I was quite unsure what to do. Especially since I no longer had my previous occupation to keep me busy. So, I decided to go visit a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in a while. In fact, he was one of the few people who still liked me. I grabbed my black leather jacket and set off down the road. Luke's house was around seven blocks from my apartment so it was definitely going to kill some time. Hopefully, he was home. I was jarred from my thoughts as I heard a weird noise down an alley as I passed. Now, I know that plenty of weird noises have been known to come from alleys but this was no ordinary weird noise. It was an inhuman growling sound that I hadn't heard the likes of in at least four years and made my hair stand on end. Then I heard something else: a girl. Though, she wasn't screaming, she was yelling. She was literally trying to fight the thing.

Now, that I definitely hadn't seen happen in a while. I decided to go ahead and take a look. I saw it first. A demon with the looks of the girl from the Ring and The Grudge mixed with Mama. To summarize, it was creepy as hell. That's also when I saw the girl. She had pale skin, long black hair, and one electric blue eye and one bright green eye. She noticed me and gave me a look that said are you just going to stand there or are you going to help? I decided that then would be a good time to jump in. I ran up behind it and took out my knife that I still carried around for said interesting situations. Right as it was about to bring it's claws down on her, I jabbed it's side, causing it to be distracted. I pulled out my knife and grabbed the girl's hand, pulling her out of the alley. I looked back, expecting to see it chasing us, but nothing followed us.

Chapter 2

We had decided to stop a few blocks down from the alley. To my surprise, nothing ever did follow us. "Well, thanks for helping me out back there." the girl said after taking a few minutes to catch her breath. "Sure. No problem." "By the way, the name's Amelia." she said with a smile. I noticed that she had a British accent. "Well, my name's Nolan." I said, glad that I finally knew this girl's name. "Sooo...." she said. I too, didn't know what to do with the lull in the conversation. "Well, I'd better go. We should hang out sometime." "Sure. I could give you my phone number." I said. She handed me her phone and I typed in the number. She then left. I watched her leave, a lot of questions buzzing in my head. I decided to go to Luke's anyway, especially since he might know something considering he has better connections then I ever have. Finally, I reached his apartment. I knocked on the door. "Luke! I need to talk to you!" I yelled. As I suspected, I heard him answer, "Coming!" He unlocked and pulled the door open. "What?" he asked and I noticed that he looked absolutely exhausted and that there were dark shadows under his bright blue eyes, his blonde hair disheveled, and he was shorter then me so now with the light behind him, I could see worry lines etched in his skin.

"Sorry, I need to talk to you. Something that happened on the way here." he sighed as he stepped aside to let me in. I walked into his small house, which was surprisingly cozy considering he was a Demon hunter and all. "What happened to you anyway? No offense, but you look awful." I said, somewhat concerned for him, for he was known for ignoring his own injuries to worry about other people (me) and make his worse. Luke sat beside me on the couch. "I'm fine." he mumbled as he sat down next to me, "So what did you want to tell me about?" he asked with a worried expression scrunching his features. I paused, not knowing if I should dump this on him when he'd already had what looked like a stressful day. "Well...I saw a demon. But not just any demon. This one looked to be one of the higher ones. Not a High Demon, obviously, but close enough." "Where did you see it at?" he said, looking even paler at this point. "About four blocks down from here." After that, he seemed to lose all of the color in his face. "What was it doing?" "Who knows?" I said, deciding not to tell him about the girl as I didn't know what to make of her myself.

"We should probably go tell someone about this, especially if you didn't kill it. Wait, did you kill it?" Luke asked giving me a look I couldn't quite decipher. "No. I didn't have any weapons but that knife you gave me and besides, taking on that thing alone would've been suicide, especially since I am no longer a hunter and wasn't able to procure backup." I said. Luke laughed, "Since when were you the rational, "wait to rush in to a bad situation" type?" I smiled, but it quickly faded with me noticing just how much I'd changed in the last few years, especially since I quit hunting and the whole age thing. "Here, why don't I wait to tell and see what happens? I can see that you are in no better mood to deal with this then I am. Why don't we just play a video game or something?" he asked somewhat gently, taking note of my melancholic mood. "Sure." I agreed. We ended up playing a bunch of games, (I won most of the time by the way) and at about 10:00 at night, I decided that I should probably be getting home. "Be careful, ok?" Luke said as I was halfway out the door. "Sure thing." and with that I walked into the crisp, clear, inky blackness of the night.
