Chapter 1: An Apartment On The Fourth Floor

My name is Mikasa Ackerman, I’m a student at UCLA with a major in Sociology. I live in an apartment off campus with my little brother (adopted) and my friend, Armin. Armin majors in Neuroscience. And my brother Eren...he goes to culinary school. He wanted to be an actor, but our parents didn’t like that idea. We live in Apartment D-420, on the fourth floor, with a bunch of other UCLA students. Like Connie, Jean, Marco, Christa, Ymir, Sasha, Bertholdt, Reiner, and Annie. All  of us were kind of close friends, we all went to high school with each other. At least most of us went to high school with each other. Bertholdt, Reiner, and Annie went to a prep school. All three of them have rich parents.

So, our story starts in our apartment corridor. The semester is a week away from beginning, my friends and I will be Sophomores at UCLA. I walked out of my apartment, half dressed with a towel pinned to my head. As I turned to go to Sasha’s apartment, I bumped straight into the chest of Bertholdt Fubar. He was a tall, german guy with short brown hair and forest green eyes. He was also a major in Sociology and he was on the UCLA Soccer Team. I looked up at him and he straightened,

“I’m so sorry, Mikasa. Oh my god.” He said, intimidated by something. Was it my face? I sighed,

“It’s fine, Bertholdt, it was my fault. So, if you excuse me I have to get the skirt Sasha borrowed from me yesterday for her date with Connie.” I said and moved past him. I swore I saw him blush as I walked away from him. I sighed, he wasn’t the only one on the floor attracted to me. I waved at Jean as he opened his door to say hello. He looked like he was going to faint and Marco was right at his side to fret. I took Sasha’s spare key from in my bra and unlocked the door.

“Sash?” I asked.

“Sasha’s not home right now, she went out on her daily jog, are you here to get the skirt?” Christa asked from the kitchen.

“Yes, m’am!” I chimed. Christa was a doll, she was sweet to everybody she met and she was the one who kept Sasha and Christa's girlfriend, Ymir, in line. Christa hurried into Sasha’s room and gave me the skirt.

“I cleaned it for you last night.” She said. “Want some breakfast?”

I grinned, “Sure, is Ymir up?” I asked. Christa shook her head, “Not yet.”

I shrugged and nodded my head, walking inside. I pulled the skirt on over my legs and pulled the towel off of my head, shaking out my now dry, black hair. Christa smiled, “It’s gotten pretty long since you chopped it off in Senior year.” She said. I shrugged, “I guess, yeah.”

“Girls’ day today though!” Christa cheered as we sat down to eat. I laughed, “True. Bowling and movies and checking out attractive people.” I replied.

“And you know those three upperclassmen, Levi, Hanji, and Erwin?” I nodded, Levi was my older brother. Christa laughed,

“They’re throwing a party tonight and we’re going. Everybody on this floor is going. We have to.” She said. I frowned, “You guys know I don’t like parties.”

“Do you wanna be the only person on this floor tonight or-?”

“Fine, but I’m not drinking. I’ll be the designated driver so you guys get as wasted as you want.” I said. Christa laughed, “We can always count on Ackerman!” She chimed. We laughed together.

Soon enough, all the girls were up and ready to go out together. I tended to be the driver.

“So, we’ll be back in time to get ready for the party?” Ymir asked, leaning over my shoulder and the driver’s seat to turn on the radio. Christa nodded, “If everything goes as planned, yes.” She said. “Alright, ladies! To the mall!”

“To the mall!” Sasha cheered. And I took off. It was about 11 AM and the mall we were all headed to was an hour drive. So it was about noon when we climbed out of the car, dressed in pretty clothes and donning nice shoes. We all walked towards the mall, continuing our sing-along of ‘Pretty Girl Rock’.

We spent most of our time chatting and shopping for clothes and dresses for the party. And soon the day was coming to an end and the party was nearing closer.

I sat in Sasha’s bedroom, staring into my reflection. “Do I look okay, Sash?” I asked her. Sasha nodded,

“When do you not? You look gorgeous, all those older college guys will be all over you.” She said, turning my head to finish applying my lipstick to my lips. “How do I look?” Sasha asked. I smiled at her, “Amazing. Connie’s gonna love it.”

“Are you guys ready? The guys are waiting in the van out front!” Ymir called. I yelled back,

“Just let us get our shoes on!” I pulled a pair of black high heels on to my feet and picked up my leather jacket, pulling it on. I stared into my reflection and sighed. I was wearing a short red dress and black chokers with winged eyeliner and dark red matte lipstick. I looked nice, but I didn’t feel like it. As Sasha dragged me out of her apartment, Reiner was doing the same to Bertholdt and we made close eye contact. Bert’s entire face turned red and he looked away.

I sighed. Was there something on my face?
