Prologue

As a man trudges through the great snow he leaves footprints that are quickly covered by the falling snow. The night is cold and the ground is a blanket of snow. You cannot see anything at all. The man stops a bit, trying to see where to go. He keeps going with a tiny bundle in his hand. It is covered tightly so that no cold can get into it. The man comes upon an entrance to a village and walks in coming upon a house. He leaves the bundle on the ground and steps away a little hesitant at first. He looks at the bundle and then quickly turns around and leaves when the door opens. A woman steps out shivering from the icy cold and suddenly sees the bundle. She picks it up carefully and looks around to see who left it. “Hello!” she calls but nothing replies.

She walks back into her home taking the bundle with her and sets it on the table. The bundle moves and the blankets fall open a bit revealing a tiny baby. The woman calls for her husband and he rushes in and when his eyes fall on the baby they both look at each other. The baby opens it eyes to reveal something striking to the husband and wife. Its eyes are two of different shades, a passionate purple and a blue as blue as the sea. The baby starts to cry, its wails fill the room and the woman immediately picks it up shushing it. “Shh. Everything will be alright.” The baby calms down a bit and start to fall asleep again. He looks so peaceful sleeping. The husband and wife go into another room.

“What do we do?” the wife asks.

“I don’t know. We can’t just leave him. He’s a baby!” the husband replies.

“I know. Should we keep him?”

The husband sighs, “Yes.”

The wife is filled with joy. They were told that they were to never be able to bear children. It was a devastating day and this baby that was brought to them may be a sign. She will raise him as her own and make sure he will be a kind and smart man that everyone will love.

The baby starts to cry again and the new mother rushes out to calm him. He’s wide-awake now and stares at her with curious eyes. She smiles and holds him tight to her. Suddenly there is a great gust of wind and the door to the house blows open revealing a man. He’s quite old and wears a maroon robe. His face is weathered and has lines of old age. “Where is the human Mirana?” the man says his voice booming. The husband rushes in and stands in front of his wife trying to protect her.

The wife moves him away, “I am Mirana. Why have you stepped into my house?” she asks with a slight amount of fright in her voice.

“Ah Mirana. You have found the boy I presume? Good, good. I am Fabius the Great and I have come to tell you something. That boy you have, he’s something special, special as in magic wise. You’ll see him do things that aren’t normal but do not yell or get angry with him. Everything is done for a reason and you are to raise this boy.” Fabius pauses for a bit then goes on, “He is to do great things in his life Mirana. Remember that.”

“What do you mean?” Mirana asks but before she can get an answer Fabius leaves through the door. Mirana looks at the child and kisses his head. “Don’t you worry child. I will raise you well.” Mirana’s husband comes up beside her and smiles with her. He will not care that this baby boy is different and has magic. Whatever makes his wife happy makes him happy. “What should we name him?” Mirana asks.

Her husband thinks a bit then answers, “He will be Odgeid, after the great warrior who helped save all of land of Danarea.”

“I think that would be perfect.” Mirana says. She wonders how she’ll be able to explain to everyone in the village about her new baby. This is something of a true miracle. However what Fabius said about Odgeid troubles her. Magic? All the warlocks have died some time ago. At least that’s what she thought. Fabius the Great was only a name something a warlock would have. Could there still be warlocks alive? They were all supposed to be gone because they were destroyed during the Danarea War between the people of Danarea and the evil warlock Balirn. It was a time of depression and pain and loss. Many died that day but eventually the people of Danalea persevered and won. Balirn was locked somewhere in the Dark Mountains where no one dared to pass through. It was said to be cursed because of Balirn’s staying there. Mirana shakes her head and stops thinking about Balirn and the war. She must think about other things like Odgeid.

Chapter 1

The boy runs through the forest carrying a bag of red apples. He looks back his face frightened, he doesn't notice the rock in front of him and trips and falls. He quickly sits up and rubs his head. 'I'm going to get you Odgy!" a voice calls. The boy's eyes widen and he quickly gets up and runs. Before he can get to his home a pair of hands grab his shirt and pulls him back. "What did I say about stealing my stuff Odgeid?" says a voice that smells like rotten fish that could only belong to Kan, a bully that always picked on the boy the most. But that is not what makes the boy cringe. He hates his real name and prefers to be called Od. Ever since the day Od's mother called him by his real name Kan always picked on him. It just wasn't Kan who picked on him. It was everyone. Od's mother called him Odgeid in front of the whole village at a gathering. It was one of Od’s most embarrassing moments.

"Give back my food or else you'll get it," Kan says. Od thinks of all the different ways he could escape with the apples. Stealing the apples would show that Kan couldn’t always pick on him to the other children in the village. Everyone including the adults knew Kan was a mean and picked on little children except Kan's parents. They thought he was their perfect little boy who would become the leader of the village one day. Od snorted at the thought of that. "What's so funny Stick?" Kan says pulling Od closer. Stick was one of the many nicknames Od was called by the other children.

"Maybe it's the fact that your breath smells so bad Kan. Gee, you have to learn how to clean yourself. This smell is worse than something dead thrown into a pile of animal droppings." Od regretted saying that when Kan's fist immediately came at him but paused inches away from Od's almost broken face. Kan laughed and took the apples from Od.

"I told you not to mess with me freak." Kan said still laughing. He walked away leaving Od relieved he was not beaten to pulp. He quickly ran home in case Kan decided to come back. When he arrived at his house his mother, Mirana, was cooking something for dinner. "Hello Ma." Od said sitting down on one of the chairs.

"How was school Od? Make any friends?" His mother said already knowing the answer.

"You know how it is Ma. No one ever talks to me unless it is to call me names ever since the incident." Od replies. His mother freezes at the mention of the incident. When Od was five there was a fire at his school Kids were saying how he did it and there were balls of fire appearing at his hands. Mirana told Od that he did none of that stuff and it was just a little accident. "What really happened that day Ma? I know you haven't been telling me the complete truth. I think I'm ready now to know it." Od says.

What Mirana wants to say is that he doesn't but she realizes Od is old enough now. He should be able to take what she has to say not that hard. Mirana was meaning to tell him when he is an adult but now at 16 she knows he is mature enough. Od waits for an answer silently finally his mother says something, "I will tell you. However this is something me and your father have to tell you together." Mirana fears how Od will really act and hopes he understands why she kept it from him all this time.

"Really?" Od says in disbelief. His mother nods and Od throws his hands up in happiness. Finally he will know why he was always different from the other kids at school, and what really happened a few years ago.

"But for now go set the table. Your father is almost home and it's supper time soon." Od's mother says. Od gladly goes to the supper room. Before he can lay the first dish down the door opens and there standing is his father, Jarred.

"Dad! Guess what? Ma is telling the reason why that fire happened and why my eyes are weird!" Od says with excitement. His father raises his eyebrows at his wife silently asking if his son is either crazy or they really are to be telling him. The mother nods. The topic of telling Od was something discussed often. However, it always ended the same. Od will not know until he is an adult. "Come on Dad. Let's eat supper. Ma made horse stew, your favorite."

The family sits down and quietly eats though Od is so full of excitement he feels like he might burst.
