Introduction

Steve was a hapless loser. He had never been on a date. He could never talk to girls. Chapter 1

A quiet coffee shop on the edge of town. That's where Steve did most of his work as a writer. No one ever bothered him here. No one ever talked to him. It had been this way for years. Steve would see couples canoodling in the quiet little cafe corner and sigh. No one would want him. Bespectacled, hair a mess, same old boring button down plaid shirts. Even the thought of talking to a girl made him clench his jaw with anxiety. Steve continued to munch on his cranberry muffin and clack away at the keys on his keyboard, as per the norm.

Hellbender, the demon tasked with the job of inhabiting Steve's body, would try his best to mess Steve up on a daily basis, but it seemed Steve was already so nerdy and awkward, there was no possible way to make things worse. One day, Hellbender made Steve trip, breaking his thick pair of prescription glasses. He fumbled his way down to the Optometrist's for a new pair, but decided on contact lenses instead. On another occasion, Hellbender had Steve cut his long, stringy hair into a faux hawk. While doing laundry, Hellbender made Steve pour bleach into a load of his precious button down plaid shirts, ruining them.

Now Steve looked like a completely different person. Steve sat there at his cafe, typing away, but understandably irked by all the misfortunes that had befallen him. The female barista called out his name for his usual iced coffee order.

He went up to retrieve it, but his arm awkwardly knocked into the barista's hand. It flew up and spilled coffee all over her apron. Steve was mortified. He stuttered, trying to apologize.

The barista smiled, "I guess this one's on me!" She laughed.

Steve was surprised at her easiness.

"You look familiar." She spoke again. "Do you come here often?"

"Yes, actually...all the time."

"Cranberry muffin?"

"Yes. How did you...?"

"I noticed you, over there in the corner all the time. I wanted to come talk to you, but I was too shy." The female barista said softly. "What do you do?"

"Oh, I'm a writer." Steve said uncomfortably.

"You write?" The female barista said surprised. "I write too!"

"Really?"

"Uh huh, mostly fantasy stuff." The female barista smiled. "Here, let me make you another coffee."

The female barista stumbled and the iced coffee landed on Steve. Now both of them, coffee covered, looked at each other and laughed.

"I'm so sorry. I'm just so clumsy. Sometimes I feel like I'm possessed."

"Me too." Steve smiled. "So...if you're not doing anything sometime, could I take you out for a proper cup of coffee?"

"I'd like that. I get off work at 6. I'm Amy."

"Steve."

Steve went back to his corner to wait for Amy and the two went out and had a great time together. For you see, everyone has their own demons, the trick is finding someone else whose demons play well with yours.
