How do you tell if your book is YA or middle school reading level?
I feel like it has more to do with the inner theme of your book.
An MG book (8-12)would be one that only focuses on the outer happenings. A YA (13-18) goes deeper into character development, personal problems, and that whole Inner Goals/OUter Goals thing.
The topics discussed in MG can be lighter than the ones talked about in YA.
In my opinion, those two sections can be further divided into sub-divisions.
There's Upper MG, which would be like for 12-14, and Lower YA, which would be 14-16.
