Corridor

The door made a click as Larissa, a dark haired nineteen-year-old, walked into the lab.

The "Corridor" was almost done.

"Your late Riss!" A young woman with short red wavy hair ran up to her, "what took you so long?"

"I stopped to grab a quick bite to eat before we fire up the corridor Cheryl," Larissa answered as they walked towards two others who were standing near what looked like a pure white metal door frame connected to some tech in the middle of the room with a computer or two close by.

The first one, Orlando Ackley, with the jet black hair was a close friend and fellow technician of Larissa. The second one, Galen Dorran, with light brown hair and older than the others was the chief technician.

"Look who's here," Orlando grinned shortly after he saw Larissa and tipped his welding helmet to her.

As soon as Galen noticed Larissa he gestured to her with a file and forceps, "Miss Wright, you have the honors of making the finishing touch ups. This was your idea."

Larissa took the forceps and file, "Thanks," then she sat down and quietly started working on the tiny wires and computer chips inside the frame of the door. Then, she closed the opening, "It's done."

Then a blue light appeared in the middle of the doorway and slowly filled the whole shape of it.

The three silently looked at their invention in awe.

"It-- it worked," Cheryl softly spoke breaking the silence.

Then Galen turned to Larissa, "Are you ready? We're going to send you to the alternate universe where we never met you."

"I am," Larissa nodded,

Just as she made her way towards the doorway Orlando stopped her, "Riss, if this doesn't work, and something happens--" he paused suddenly and took a breath, "Are you sure you want to risk it?"

"I do," She smiled, "I'll come back, Orlando."

Cheryl typed something into one of the computers that were hooked up to the doorway, "It's ready now. You have one hour before we bring you back."

Larissa looked at the three for a moment then she walked through the doorway.

A soft blue light enveloped Larissa as she walked forward, looking around her she looked at what seemed to be entrances into other alternate universes.

Just as she predicted.

Larissa had come up with the idea of inventing this three years ago. She had a theory that in order to get to these alternate universes there was a corridor of sorts you could access, in order to get to the other universes. It was like the multiverse's way of keeping things in order.

Shortly after getting a glance at the other universes she could feel herself being guided to the right one. When she made it to the entryway she stood still for a moment, the entryway was in the shape of a partially transparent circle that faded into the soft blue on the sides.

Larissa reached forward moving her hand first into the entryway, it felt like a soft mist. Then she continued through and found herself walking through a door.

"Welcome to Neutron Laboratory of Physics, miss!" A greeter with blonde hair and green exclaimed.

Larissa was quiet again, then she turned to the greeter whom she recognized from her universe, "Lucy Waller! Sweet mother of pearl. It worked!"

"H-How did you know my name?" Lucy asked tentatively.

"Well," Larissa groped for words, "I've heard around that you were the head greeter of Neutron Labs. Rest assured, I'm no stalker."

Lucy was quiet before responding, "O-Okay, please look around if you wish- uh- Larissa."

"In fact, I will," Larissa chuckled as she made her way towards the crowd of people who were listening to someone.

Larissa found that she recognized most of the people in the crowd. In her universe, Larissa was a people-person, she had many friends and acquaintances. As she neared the front she noticed that the someone who was talking was Galen!

"My gosh," she spoke under her breath noticing how this Galen was similar and yet still different from the Galen she knew back home.

This Galen wore glasses and had a more animated nature, the rest of the appearance was the same. Looking to Galen's left she could see Cheryl who was standing beside him.

The only appearance difference this Cheryl had was longer straighter hair. The Cheryl she knew was also fairly withdrawn, but the one she saw here seemed much more withdrawn than the one she knew.

Larissa kept her eyes on the two, paying attention to Galen, and Cheryl more than what Galen was talking about. After Galen was finished Larissa waited for the right moment to talk to them.

"Mr. Dorran?" Larissa asked Galen who had just finished talking to someone else. She just wanted to talk to him for a few minutes and feel out his personality and find out other differences between this Galen and the one from her universe.

"Doctor Dorran, please. I have a Ph.D. you know," He corrected her while moving his glasses down a little.

"Doctor Dorran," Larissa rephrased then continued, "Just a question, are you taking lab technicians at the moment?"

"New lab technicians? God forbid, I have enough right now. But miss, you can meet my two best technicians right now if you want. They happen to be together right now over there," he pointed to Cheryl who was standing next to Orlando about twenty feet away, "I have more questions to answer so--" He gestured towards Cheryl and Orlando again.

Larissa got the message, so she nodded and walked away. She had seen enough of this version of Galen.

Orlando and Cheryl stood in front of a large glass screen showing images of their next big projects.

None of which shown going to an alternate universe.

Before Larissa planned on talking to Orlando and Cheryl she got a good look at him first. The only appearance difference was that this Orlando had longer hair, Larissa smiled in approval. Then she started paying attention to personality differences.

As she paid attention to how he interacted with others, and his fellow lab technician, Cheryl, who silently stood by his side. She noticed that this Orlando's personality was very similar to the one she knew, except this one seemed a little more humorous. She liked that too.

"Orla-- Mr. Ackley," Larissa quickly fixed her mistake as she found an opportunity to just talk to him.

He turned to her, "Yes?"

Larissa was quiet for a few seconds before speaking, "Do you take suggestions for your next projects?"

"Indeedy we do miss. Whatcha' got?"

"Alternate universes. Multiverse travel," Then she told him her whole theory.

Afterward Cheryl, who had been quiet the whole time Larissa saw her, had finally spoken up, "Sounds right to me," then she looked at Orlando who was still thinking about what Larissa had told him, "what do you think?"

"Yeah," Orlando looked at Cheryl while nodding, "I think we could try that out," shortly after he looked at Larissa, "Doctor Dorran isn't taking any new lab techs, but maybe I can convince him to add you to our team."

Larissa shook her head, "I'm afraid I can't join you," She knew her one hour was almost up, there were only a few minutes left, "I'm not from here."

Just as Larissa was going to make it for the door Orlando stopped her, "Wait! Where do you live?"

"Let's just say I'm from someplace very far away." Larissa laughed and she made a beeline for the door. Just as she walked through it, she was enveloped by a soft blue light again.

"Please be alive, please be alive, please be alive." Larissa could hear Orlando's voice as she ran towards the entryway to her universe, and leaped through the doorway into the lab room.

Orlando ran up to Larissa with Cheryl and Galen following closely behind, they were all quiet, then Larissa spoke, "We might be having visitors."
