Chapter 1

If there's a way out, it should be coming soon, Barry thought. He'd been wandering the mist for who knows how one, and it didn't seem like there was ever going to be an exit

He learned very slowly to always look down, otherwise there was the chance for a crack in the land to hop out at him and bring him into the dark depths below. He learned as well to ration food as best he could, because there was certainly not much coming in the road ahead. Not too often, there were lone houses degraded and untreated to the point of no repair, that usually contained some sort of preserved food that was able to last to the point Barry was at. But, the most important thing he learned over time, was that when he could hear footsteps aside from his own, he had to find a place to hide as fast as he could.

He hopped and skipped over cracks large and small, hoping this would be the day he would get out of the horrid place. The mist seemed a bit lighter than usual, and when Barry looked up, he could see a big white ball in the sky, which wasn't ever there before. He enjoyed looking at it since he perceived it to be a sign that he was getting close, but he couldn't look at it too long before he started to get weird dark spots in his vision.

He felt a rumbling in his stomach, so he decided to stop for a food break. He reached into his backpack and grabbed a small bar of sorts, labeled with odd symbols on the packaging. He ripped open the plastic and took a bite into it. He would take one more after that, and that would last him until he felt hungry again.

He looked up at the sky as he reached the bar to his mouth for a second bite and he saw a second bright light. This must mean I'm even closer!, he thought. Then, he noticed that this light was moving. The other light moved too, but very very slowly. This one was moving fast.

He scrambled to get up, but dropped his bar into a nearby crack in the process. He would mourn his loss later, but there were more important matters at hand, including the huge object flying through the sky and slowly getting bigger, he looked away and held his backpack tightly, getting down to an area mostly devoid of cracks, keeping in mind the risk of falling in.

The sky lit up completely in a huge flash, and then a massive CRASH echoed from far away, the whole ground rumbled, and the cracks around Barry began to spread. He planted himself on the ground, trying to avoid the enclosing depths.

A big shake zoomed past, sending Barry a few inches into the air, and separating him from his backpack. As he smacked back into the ground, his backpack slipped into a nearby rupture, leaving him with nothing. No possessions, no food, no water (which there was barely any of in the first place), and no hope (the aforementioned goes for this as well).

After the rumbling passed, Barry slowly got up and held in the aching from the tumble he took. He looked around for anything that might have slipped out of his backpack, but there was nothing left behind. His ears stopped ringing, but the ringing was only substituted by another sound. Footsteps. Barry was not walking.

He had no place to hide, and he could already hear the approaching growling and pitter-pattering of those little beasts. They must have been alert from the crash, and quickly saw Barry as their first prey.

Barry attempted to run away before they could pin him down, but to no avail. A raptor flung itself through the mist and it rocketed right at Barry. He was hit in the back, and his body slowly plunged down to the ground. This is it, he thought, here I'll lay, on an unmarked grave. It was a good run. Too bad it ended before its time. Oh well. Any second now. Soon enough, I'll hit this cold ground and that'll be it. Yup. Soon enough. Aaany second now- Barry smacked into the ground, and quickly passed out...
