How to protect content and what to do if your YouTube video is still stolen

What if you find your video on someone else’s channel?

Why steal a video?

YouTube is the most active copyright advocate among video hosting companies. But even the round-the-clock work of the content service and strict sanctions have not yet discouraged the desire to use other people's videos from fans of easy money. At risk is any popular video that has thousands of views and a flurry of likes and comments. Unprincipled YouTube videos copy such videos in order to quickly and guaranteedly monetize their channel.

The second reason is the lack of their own content : often authors simply have nothing to fill channels with, and they use other people's videos to attract the attention of the audience (for example, reviews, tips, panoramic shooting, etc.). But even the most cautious thief risks losing his YouTube channel. Moreover, the danger awaits him not only in the person of the author, who can file a complaint at any time, but also on the part of the content service. YouTube is constantly fighting video theft and may require verification of content rights. If the user does not confirm them, they are threatened with strikes until the channel is blocked.

Ways to protect videos

YouTube provides a range of tools to protect your videos from copying. The author of the video can choose one of them, but in this case, the principle “the more the better” works with a bang.

Logo

One of the easiest and fastest ways to protect your video. Suitable for those authors who regularly upload videos and want to prevent their copying. Even if the video is copied, it will still refer (albeit purely visually) to the original source. Removing the logo from the video is problematic, so this is a fairly effective way.

Light up in the frame

The method is relevant for fitness trainers, makeup artists, experts and bloggers making videos in the format "How to ...". Typically, this video format involves shooting the process itself, and the author reads the text behind the scenes. The result is content that is useful and interesting to subscribers, which steals at an extraordinary speed. If the author of the video is in the frame, then stealing it will become much more difficult. When filing a complaint, the evidence will be obvious. However, this method of protection requires a more serious approach to shooting the video: you need to have good equipment, a well-equipped room, and there should be no fear of the camera.

Limit the ability to embed video clips

YouTube enables users to post other people's videos on their sites. In this case, the link to the YouTube channel remains, so the author does not lose from such actions. If the author does not want his content to be posted on third-party resources, then he simply blocks the ability to embed the video on other sites in his account.

Enter the video in the Content ID database

Content ID is the most reliable method of copyright protection on YouTube. Only authors who are able to confirm exclusive rights to content can use this system. To do this, you must apply for registration of the video in the Content ID and conclude a special agreement with YouTube.

After that, video samples are uploaded to the system, and the author can monitor how it is used on YouTube.

The following materials are not allowed to register with Content ID:

  • any recordings of concerts, shows and events;
  • unlicensed / licensed music and video, but without exclusive rights;
  • video with the passage of games, with software elements or trailers;
  • collections, remixes of other works.

The video was posted on a third-party site

Often YouTube videos are used to populate sites. They can be embedded in their entirety or made from video by cutting photos / presentation. Usually, embedding a video on a site by authors is only welcome, because there is a link to a channel where new subscribers can come. But if desired, this function can be blocked. If there is no link to the video, or photos cut from the video were found, then the author can write to the site’s support service and ask to delete its content or put a link to the source.

Quite often, such requests are ignored. In this case, you can file a content theft complaint and send it to Google Support. This service checks and removes content illegally posted on the website based on the DMCA video protection (Digital Age Copyright Act). Created content is a value that needs to be fought for in case of theft. If you find that someone is illegally using your videos, do not sit back - the benefit of ways to influence the intruder is enough today.
