Prologue

Mom told me that bravery is the most essential thing to carry with you anywhere you go.

She said that more than necessary.

I may have not understood that back then but I guess I need to put that into use now. I hate forests, I hate snakes, spiders, alligators, any reptile, carnivore, canines, you name it I hate them! They scare me and you can thank all the movies for that. I’m hoping this field trip we’re going to won’t turn out so cliché. Seeing as the eighth graders are paired up with the ninth and tenth graders in attending this trip makes it all the more scarier to me. I’m not the most sociable person on the planet but I don’t think I can handle crowds with such high class students. And when I say high class, I mean those that live in such fairytale-like mansions and who have such high popularity rates in school such as Maya Hemmings from the eighth grade, or Liz Révon from ninth. I come from an all-girls school from Derevue, Carribus.

I guess I haven’t formally introduced myself to my first ever journal I got for my birthday.

Well, hello. My name is Dianna Avery Quinn. I am a thirteen year old girl from Derevue, Carribus. I’m currently on my eighth grade of schooling and I am hoping that you’ll be with me all throughout my disastrous, unwanted, and outrageous camping trip happening on the 15th of December 2009.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

December 15, 2009, Monday 8:20 am

Everyone’s fussing about the camping trip we’re going to have. We were all currently standing near the bus stop waiting for our ride to the camp sight—well, everyone other than me. I was sitting on the ground, not minding all the stares I was getting. There was redhead Jeremiah with her latest Apple phone already snapping selfies of herself. Then there was the so-called ‘popular girls’ playing and making a mess with their hairs and labeling the new style as what’s in these days. Meanwhile, here I am writing in this flimsy journal. Danica was nowhere in sight. Oh how I wish she was next to me and making conversations right now. Ugh, the agony of missing a best friend.

Signed,

D. A. Q.

“The bus is here!” yelled Reign. All the girls started picking up their camping bags while I'm still standing here hopelessly waiting for Danica to make an appearance. Sadly, the bus doors had opened and she still was nowhere in sight.

So I guess this is going to be one boring camping trip.

Suddenly, when the bus doors were fully opened, Danica sprinted out as if trying to catch up after someone. When she finally laid her eyes on me, a wide grin spread across her face. She ran towards me like there was no tomorrow.

That was quite normal for her, seeing as she has an over the rainbow bubble of joy installed in her aura.

“Dianne!” she ran into me and we both fell to the ground.

“Danica, off! What has gotten into you?! Oh wait, let me rephrase that… what have you got in you into??” I said with a straight face. Of course I missed my soul sister but if I said that… matters would only get a lot worst.

“Oh come on, Diana!” she laughed.

“Don’t call me that!” for some reason, this made her giggle. She knew that I hated being called Diana. It always sounded so formal-ish to me which was the complete opposite of my personality—being a one big potato slob, if there was such a thing.

“Dude, how are you not even excited about this trip? Don’t you know the sight that we’re going to is one of the most controversial areas here in Caribus?” this had me perplexed.

“Controversial? But why? How? Isn’t this place just some type of forest with exotic blah blah blah?”

“Just some type of forest?! JUST some type?! No it is not JUST some type of forest. This particular forest was said to be inhabited by the most fascinating things that man could only imagine of. Diane, we’re going to the Veronia Heights!”

“Okay, calm your cookies, man. I was just saying.” And here comes one of her famous I-already-planned-what-we’re-going-to-do-last-night-slash-we’re-going-to-have-so-much-fun talks.

The Veronia Heights.

Never in my life have I ever imagined myself to step foot into the Veronia Heights. According to myths, this forest was the only one of its kind. It was said to have links with the whole of Derevue in ways that are mystical. Creatures from Veronia served as Derevue, Caribus’ guardians for over centuries but never have I once spotted a non-ordinary creature lurking around. Some would say that’s because they’re disguised as human beings and some would say it’s because they’re invisible to human eyes. Whichever way it is, it still remains fascinating to me though I have always believed that this was only a pigment of imagination. It’s too much fantasy-like to be real.

“Hello? Earth to Diane.” Danica waved in front of me. I guess I must’ve got lost in my thoughts again.

“The bus is about to move. Let’s get ready with our stuffs.” She reminded me.

“Oh yea, sure.”

So I carried on with the rest and spotted two empty chairs for me and Danica to sit on. After the very long chat we had, more like the very long speech she had since I rarely replied; I noticed that Danica’s energy went down by a lot. She had this face on. A face I know would only become visible when she’s really troubled.

“Danica, what’s up?” I asked.

“Dianne, I have a bad feeling about this trip.” She said solemnly, as if these were the few days she has left with me. This is very bothering.

“Dani, what on Earth do you mean bad feeling? Weren’t you the one very excited about this trip?” I tried to shake her back and forth just to make sure she’s okay and just like that a her infamous smile returned to her pale face.

“Right! I almost forgot about that. What on Earth was I saying?!” she laughed as if that was the funniest thing in the world. “Let’s just focus on the positive side here, shall we?”

Weird.

The trip to Veronia would take up to five hours before we will be arriving. Sometime along the way, Danica’s eyes started to get droopy and she fell asleep on my shoulder.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

I stayed awake throughout the ride and took in the scenery. It was absolutely stunning—other than shadow-y background that is. That freaked me out. The fact that anything could be lurking in those dark woods is scarier than it sounds so I tried to focus more on the scenario before the dark. And the Gaelle River was sparkling clear that it almost felt unreal. Suddenly, an alligator emerged from the river and crept into the land. I cringed back into my seat and decided to close my eyes and do what I do best instead of risking the chances of getting a heart attack.

I closed my eyes and made up stories in my head. Stories that were too perfect to be true of course. I do this out of habit, especially when I’m bored. I realized then that I was slowly starting to drift off.

“Ave…” someone whispered.

Everything was bright and blurry. I struggled to open my eyes but my surroundings were quite blurry.

As my vision was starting to clear up, everything is becoming more bearable for me to look at. Someone was staring at me. His ocean blue eyes were similar to my father’s.

I hastily stood up in order to get away from him. Who was he?

“Who are you?” I asked.

Everything became a lot clearer to me. I was standing, probably, in the heart of the woods. There was such a dazzling waterfall in front of me. I've never heard about or seen anything like this before. It was beautiful here.

“Ave…” He said.

I looked back at him and took in his features. His eyes were not exactly ocean blue—well at least not the right one.  His left eye was ocean blue while his right was purple. His resemblance to my father was tremendously uncanny. It gave me goose bumps everywhere.

“Ave, I need you to take caution once you arrive here. You’re not safe here but I assure you, I’ll do my best to keep an eye on you. I promise.”

“What…” my brain buffered for a while there. “ Wait… what? Wait, who are you?” I asked.

“That’s not necessary for now. Remember, take caution.”

And just like that, he was gone. I tried to push the thoughts away along with his warning too. I walked around and took in my environment. Seriously, it’s amazing here. Why’d I only see this now?

Suddenly, everything seemed to stumble and twirl. My once beautiful and bright surroundings morphed into a forest of darkness. I didn't appreciate the change at all. Fear started to creep up my arms as I turned in search for help. Out of nowhere, I heard something unusual.

I turned again looking for where the sound originated from. Another loud roar emanated from deep within the forest. I was scared.

“Help!”

“Is anyone out there!?”

“Please, stop messing with me!”

Someone that looked to be covered in a cloak emerged from the shadowy trees. All I saw was a silhouette and eyes that resembled that of a laser’s but very electric blue instead of red. My palms were sweating and I was on the verge of having a heart attack.

He roared so throatily that the branches and bushes started to shake. There was something about this person’s aura that still intrigued me despite the fear that’s bubbling deep within me.

But that all disappeared when I felt a tight grasp in my neck that’s cutting my air tunnel.

“Get…a-a-way… fr-fr… fr-om… me…” I forced out within gasps.

“L-let me g-go…” I tried again.

“Dianne.” he said. My eyes grew wider after finding out that he knew my name. He sounded much more like a she. And someone I know too, to say the least.

“Dianne!” she yelled. By this time I could feel my body trembling and shaking.

“Dianne!” she yelled again.

“Dianne, wake up! Dianne, what’s going on with you?!” everything was blurry as my vision shook away.

It all got clearer now to both my senses and vision. I was just… dreaming… but everything felt so real. The environment… the atmosphere… It felt like I was actually living there. I was just… dreaming?

How…?

“Hello, Earth to Dianne. Are you okay?” Danica asked.

“Wh-what happened?” I pondered.

“Well, you were sleep talking a while ago and then you began shifting your head vigorously so I decided to wake you up.”

“What was I saying?”

“Some weird mumbles actually. Something that sounded like Jake or Jace…?” she said with uncertainty. A few seconds after, she gasped as if she knew something that I didn't. “You have a crush, don’t you?! Some fling that I don’t know about?! Oh come one Dianne, how could you not tell me??” she said.

All the while my eyes were as big as saucers. How she came up with such assumptions that fast—I have no idea. Though, I do think this has something with what I said while sleeping. I’m now seriously wondering what’s up with my dream world. It’s kind of creeping me out at the moment.

“Here we are, girls! Now, pick up your bags and get ready for some adventure!” our teacher, Ms. Bourne said. All the girls squealed in excitement including the one beside and excluding me. As I opened my hand, which I didn't notice was closed so tightly until now, to reach out for my bag, a few leaves fell to the bus floor. A sudden flashback of the guys with blue and purple eyes came into view. Goose bumps once again found its way to my arms. I picked up one of the leaves that fell from my hand and saw that something was written on it.

I’ll do my best to keep an eye on you. I promise.
