Introduction

Carter Jaxon is the brother of Colonel Edward Jaxon who is a recurring character in my Valoryn Universe series. Carter's life as a watcher leads into my other universe Veradon. The two of them lean against each other in several Valoryn stories and the First Veradon story.

1982 Entry 1

When I was a little boy I used to look across the universes and imagine myself in all of them. My brother Edward and I liked to play a game where we slipped from one to the other wreaking havoc, our other selves trying to stop us.

As the years passed we lost interest in our youthful game but my knowledge of one other universe grew. Sometimes our world melts away before my eyes and my roots to my home world untether one by one. My twin brothers hand on my arm is the only thing that can pull me back.

I miss him, my brother Edward. Even the womb could not separate us. He swore to me on the day I was taken that he would work his way to a high enough clearance so we would be reunited. For the last year his promise has reassured me even though in my heart, I know it will never happen. They will never let him near me.

Today I met what they are calling my protector. A thin whips of a girl. It was her who gave me this journal. I don't know whether I can trust her or not, so for now I'll write my memories. And then I'll never forget. One day I hope this volume finds its way into my brothers hands. That way he'll know I never blamed him.

1982 Entry 2

The first time I saw through our reality, it was a shimmering in the air. The kind you see when it's hot, or when a migraine is coming on. A headache did accompany it, so naturally I didn't pay it any attention.

The second time, the shimmering opened and blocked out my bedroom wall with a field, green and waving in the wind. A soft breeze rolled through my closed bedroom. I remember walking toward it. The hole collapsed on my leg. My yell drew Edward to my room. He sat with me for hours. When I'd tried everything and it was apparent it wasn't going to open back up, Edward covered the floor in plastic and severed my leg. We were twelve.

After that, he never let me out of his sight. The next time the ground opened below my feet, Edward saved my life. I lost count of how many times bad things happened when part of me slipped over. For awhile I was in a bad place. Edward pulled me off the edge more than once. I owe him my life, and I may never be able to repay those debts.
