The Tree

Chapter 1

The day the children started to draw the same thing changed the parents' lives. It all started when a parent noticed that both of her kids were drawing the exact same thing the exact same way. When she went to tell her neighbors about it, she discovered that their kids were doing it too. Her neighbor joined her and they went from house to house, looking and finding out that every kid was drawing the exact same thing: a tree. No matter the age, all the pictures looked like only one child drew them.

All the parents on that street got together and started talking. They talked for a long time, and when they stopped, they noticed something that they had never noticed before. There was a tree in the park where they sat talking. A tree that looked exactly like the ones every child is drawing. This tree had no leaves, it was white, and it was very scraggly. It was also the middle of summer, when every tree should have leaves. They realized that that was the tree that the children were drawing, so they decided to check it out.

All of the parents, though only six or seven people were there, walked slowly over to the tree. They looked at its white bark and saw that there were multiple carvings on it. Most were this person plus this person forever with a heart around it. But there was one carving that creeped everyone out.

"Hey, what does this one say?"Lilly asked, pointing a carving out.

"'The fourth night of the fourth day on the fourth hour of the fourth month I will be released to wreak havoc on the world and get my revenge.'" Yeltic read.

"Who is this 'I'?" Penny asked.

"I don't know. I don't really want to know." Brendan said.

"What if we destroy the tree?" Lilly asked.

"What if that helps it escape?" Nancy asked.

"We could burn it. The date that it said is tomorrow. I say through gasoline and salt on it and holy water and burn it." Yeltic said. Everyone looked at him. "What? It sounds like a demon, and demons are repelled by salt. It's worth a try."

"I agree with him." Bernice said, "It's a smart idea. Let's meet here tomorrow morning."

All of them went home and they met at the park near the tree. Each of them had brought something: Nancy, Bernice, and Yeltic had brought the salt. Lilly had brought the gasoline. Brendan brought the lighter, and Penny and Jack had brought the holy water. They quickly threw the holy water and the salt on the tree. Then they doused the tree in gasoline. Then Brendan lit it on fire. As they watched it burn, they could swear that they heard words coming from the fire.

"You fools! I would have made it better! The world needed me, the Demon King!" That is all that they heard, for they had saved the world. All because of the kids and a drawing.
