Shadow

I love my shadow.

My shadow follows me everywhere.

Wherever I go my shadow will be there.

Whatever I do my shadow will do it, too

When I wake up in the morning, I see my shadow on my closet door.

"Hi, Shadow," I say to it, waving hello.

My shadow waves back at me

My shadow always waves back.

When I walk to school, my shadow walks with me, copying every step I take.

When it's time for lunch, I sit by the window and my shadow is there.

When I take my lunchbox out of my backpack, my shadow and I both have the same one, except my shadow's doesn't have the big gold star on the front.

When I go out to play at recess, my shadow appears below me when I step out the door.

When I go to the sandbox and build a sandcastle, my shadow builds one too, and we both put a little red flag on the top.

When I walk back home from school, my shadow walks back with me.

When I go to the park and climb the jungle gym, my shadow climbs up with me.

When I swing on the monkey bars with my legs dangling above the ground, my shadow is hanging on the bars with me.

When I zoom down the big yellow twisty slide, my shadow slides down with me.

When I push myself on the swings so high I could touch the clouds, my shadow touches the big puffy clouds with me.

When I see the ice cream truck drive by and run to catch it, my shadow dashes just as fast as me.

I'm surprised it can keep up with me.

When I order a vanilla cone with caramel pieces and rainbow sprinkles, my shadow orders the same thing, and we enjoy our ice cream together.

When I sit at the table and eat dinner, I see my shadow sitting beside me on the wall.

When the sun went down and it’s time to go to bed, I said goodnight to my shadow.

It waves goodbye to me before we both go to sleep.

I can't wait to see my shadow tomorrow.

When I woke up the next day, I rubbed my eyes, yawned like a lion, stretched my arms, and turned my head to say good morning to my shadow.

When I looked at my closet door, my shadow wasn't there.

When I walked to school, my shadow wasn't walking beside me.

When I sat down for lunch, my shadow wasn't sitting beside me.

When I went out to play at recess, my shadow wasn't waiting for me outside the door.

When I went to the sand box and built a sandcastle, my shadow wasn't there to build one with me.

When I walked back home, I looked down to see if my shadow had appeared.

It still wasn't there.

When I went to the park and climbed the jungle gym, my shadow wasn't climbing with me.

When I swung on the monkey bars with my legs dangling above the ground, my shadow wasn't swinging with me.

I was starting to get worried.

When I slid down the big yellow twisty slide, my shadow wasn't sliding down with me.

It was not as fun without my shadow.

When I pushed myself on the swings, I didn't bother trying to reach for the clouds.

My shadow wasn't there to reach them with me.

The ice cream truck wasn't driving down the road today so I went home… by myself… without my shadow.

After eating dinner on my own, I went outside to the front yard.

I looked up at the clouds and noticed they were covering all of the sky.

Is that why my shadow was missing all day?

Does it get scared when it’s cloudy outside?

Only one way to find out.

I went to bed that night and dreamt about all the fun things my shadow and I would do tomorrow.

When I woke up the next day, I felt the sun shining through my window.

I rubbed my eyes, yawned like a lion, stretched my arms out, and turn my head to say good morning to my shadow, hoping it was there.

When I looked at my closet door, my shadow was right there, yawning and stretching with me.

Now I had my answer.

My shadow just doesn't like when it's cloudy outside.

The sun is what makes it happy.

“Hi, Shadow,” I said, smiling and waving hello.

My shadow waved back.

My shadow always waves back,
