Chapter 1

Even though Miller claimed he wrote crucible from history, many have questioned his thought. In their opinion, crucible did not fully represent the real history of Salem. However, there are individuals in support of Miller. They think crucible was a true representation of Salem. In any case, which side is valid? There is no correct argument. One can create his or her analogy of the story. Nonetheless, have a look at the following arguments about the historical accuracy of the crucible:

1)The Plot

Many contend that characters in the storyline existed in real life. Their roles in the story were also similar to their roles in the real trial. However, there were some loopholes. For example;

·In the play, Abigail and Proctor had a sexual relationship, which is not close to the possibility because of their age. Likewise, there was no evidence that they knew each other.

·Abigail and Betty’s age were overstated in the play. According to Miller, they were 14-17 years of age. While in reality, they were 11 and 9, respectively.

2)The Form Of Punishment

Apart from other capital punishment, hanging and crushing was the primal form of punishment. These techniques of punishment were unrealistic. For example;

·Drowning. Your charges were dropped if you drowned in water. However, if you stayed afloat, you were deduced to be a witch. In reality, if you drown you die, is there any possibility of judging a dead person? Free essay examples on a platform like Grades Fixer can illustrate these things further.

·You could also be stabbed multiple times. If the wounds healed, you were to be presumed a witch, but if you succumbed to death, your charges were dropped.

3)Children Of Putnam

In reality, Putnam had six living children, which contradicts the play’s analogy that only Ruth /Ann survived childhood, and was his only daughter. Additionally, Ruth had the name Ann in reality, similar to her mother’s name. The mother’s name was Ann Putnam senior, and the daughter’s name was Ann Putnam junior.

4)Nature Of Women

Women were perceived as lustful and with the habit of sending their spirits to men’s bedrooms to lie to them those times. However, the play portrays the opposite picture. Miller claims that George Jacobs was accused of sending his spirits to the bedroom of Putnam’s daughter to lie to her.

5)Hanging Of 3 Characters

According to the play, Rebecca Nurse, John Proctor, and Martha Corey were hanged on the same day. However, history holds that Rebecca Nurse was hanged on 19th July, John Proctor on 19th August and Martha on 22nd September. Additionally, it was the work of the judiciary to signing a death warrant, not Reverend Hale, as illustrated in the play.

Conclusion

From the above arguments, it is notable that crucible is historically incorrect. Some aspects are historically accurate. However, others are incorrect. Either way, the significance of the story is not devalued. The intentions of Millers is still of value and reflects a better part of history.
