Chapter 1

The phone rang and Brina sighed.  The Full Moon was three days away, but people were already getting crazy.  This was the eighth call of the morning, and she’d only been open for an hour.  Luckily, they’d all been easy; two people asking if she was going to be holding the monthly Full Moon ritual, three asking if she had specific items in stock, and two making appointments for consultations.  She glanced at the name on the caller ID, hoping this would be an easy call, too, but when she saw the name of the caller, her shoulders slumped.

Celia Conner

A middle-aged woman with just a small bit of magical ability, Celia was one of Brina’s best customers.  She was also her biggest challenge, and a major source of stress and last minute magical clean ups.

Celia loved magic a bit too much.  She used it for everything, and was especially talented at gambling magic.  She was routinely banned from casinos, due to her impressive winning streaks that left the casinos hurting for cash, and at one time, a law with her name on it had been proposed banning the use of gambling magic.  The bill didn’t pass, of course.  More than a few politicians used gambling magic themselves.

Her talent in gambling magic had made her a millionaire many times over, and Brina often wondered why she stayed living in {town name} when she could quite literally afford to live anywhere.  Celia had once told her the reason she stayed was because no one could save her magical ass the way Brina could.

Lately, Celia had been dabbling in love magic.  Money was getting boring for her, as it does when you have enough to live the rest of your life, and for your children and their children to live out their lives without worrying about money.  Her results in these love experiments had been mixed.  Most of the spells had completely fizzled, the ingredients bursting into spontaneous flames or dissolving into mush.  And when the spells did work, they were often with hilarious results.  Like the time she got two proposals within an hour of each other, both from men who were already married, with their wives standing right there.

Brina dreaded whatever magical mess had Celia calling this close to a Full Moon.
