Chapter 1

Chicken legs. Yep that's me. I mean that's not my real name of course. My name is Simone Ray. I was born to Arther and Martha Ray 12 years ago. I am 12 years old and it is currently the year 1961.  I live in Montgomery Alabama with my 5 older brothers.

Anyway back nothe chicken legs. I am chicken legs. I love to run, running is everything to me. I got the name Chicken legs because when you see a chicken running around you could tell that chickens have to fat on their legs. That's like me. I don't like to say that I'm skinny but I don't have a lot of fat. My cousins used to say, " that's a bad chicken!" Because normally when you buy chicken you want the legs or wings,(whatever you call them) you want them to have lots of fat but not me.

I am the fastest kid in the whole town! I can outrun anyone. I love to run the 1/4 mile track at our school. I wish our school had the whole one mile track like the one at the white school.

Oh another thing is that I'm black. Not colored, black. I believe that everyone has color in their heart. Wether or not it's blue, red, purple, or down right black because you have a bad heart.

Chapter 2

I don't think I dicribed me family very well, so here I go. My oldest brother is Myrn, he is 17 and he works at the general store in Montgomery. Then come Louise he is 15 and he's pretty boring. He is super smart and he knows everything. Next is Thomas. Thomas is 14 and he is the reading type. He has read every single book in the house. And Morgan is his twin. Those two are completely different. Morgan gets in tons of trouble and never listens to papa. Then the siblings I'm closest to is Reese. Reese is 13 and he is almost as in love with running as I am. We love to play sports together and run, and good off. But Myrn is my biggest fan.

When we were younger the boys were jealous of me because I had my own room and they had to share two rooms. When I was really little Myrn would lift we outside my window and I would hang all over the huge oak tree and fly with the fire flies.

Chapter 3

Today was the first day of 6th  grade. I walked to school and on my way I waved at Myrn at the general store. He tossed me a piece of chocolate and I was on my way. Until the no good Tucker Gambi had to stop me in my path.

"Hey stupid."

"Get lost Tucker!" I said back

" Id watch what your saying around here. No body like you black folk."

" well you should know, nobody likes you. "

"You think you're so fast and smart. But you're just a stupid. Black. Girl."

But before I had a chance to  acknowledge what he said, I punched him right in the eye. He must of had a black eye for a week. I was proud.

But then out of tickers anger he stood up and said dared me to race him. So I did I got up and I raced. We raced from the general store to the white school. And I won!

"Ha! I won! Good job!" I said.

" I don't need your pity! All you'll ever be is a, black girl and nothing more!"

Then he swung a hard punch at me and I fell to the ground.

I woke up about 5 hours later and I was in my room and Myrn and mama were standing right over me.

" tough knock out kid.  You're lucky I was right there to bring you back. " Myrn said.

I smiled at him weekly.

" if I ever hear about you getting into a street fight with that Gambi boy you will never see the next day. His parents are bad influences in him and him being white doesn't make him anymore likely to be nice to you. " Mama said.

" I'm sorry I couldn't help it though. He thought he was faster and so we raced and I beat him. " I said trying to defend myself.

" I know, that's why I'm signing you up for the Annual Montgomery Track-meet. " Myrn smirked as he slowly held up the flyer.

"When is it?" I asked curiousl.

"It's in one week, you and I are going to practice as much as possible 'till then."
