1: Ward 18

The hospital doors swung open and I jumped aside to flatten myself across the wall. I saw a glimpse of a man under the sheets as my co-workers rolled the hospital bed down the hallway in a hurry.

"Holy crap," I said to myself, my eyes following them. Kevin Jones, my brother, tapped me on the shoulder. I spun around.

"Allie, you do know that that was an SOS situation, right?" he asked as-a-matter-of-factly. I turned again, trying to get a glimpse of the bed again. "Allie!" I brother called again, waving his hand in front of my face. I batted his hands away.

"I've gotta get to my ward, alright?" I walked away. He crossed his arms and sighed, "Nevermind, then," he muttered.

I closed the door behind me as I entered Ward 18. "Dr, Densson?" I called. A head peeked out from behind one of the curtains. "Dr, Densson just left, Dr, Jones," William said. I walked over to him. "Did he say where he was going?" I asked. He shook his head and collapsed back into his wheelchair. I sighed and crouched down beside him. "Still can't walk?" I touched his arm. But I knew that he couldn't walk, he could never walk. Will looked down at his trembling, skinny, pale legs. "Nope," he sighed in defeat, resting his chin on his palm.

"Did Mommy and Daddy come to visit you?"

He shrugged, which clearly meant no. I sighed again and propelled myself up using the arm of his wheelchair. "Okay, hunny," I said. Will wheeled himself back into his room and I closed the curtains. I watched his shadow struggle to rise from his wheelchair, before I turned my back and went to check on the twins.

Jorden and Jenne were conjoined twins, and were connected at the head. They had had multiple failed surgeries to separate them, since they each had their own brain, and resulted with Jenne nearly dying. It was a miracle that they were both still alive, I thought as I prepared Jenne's meds.

The reason the twins had to stay at the hospital was because Jenne was paralyzed waist down, the result of their third surgery.  Jenne was incapable of normal speech, so she had to take regular meds, and of course, Jorden had no choice but to accompany Jenne to her new world at the hospital.

"Hey, girlies!" I said cheerfully as I parted the curtain.

Jenne waved, and Jorden sighed. "What's wrong, Bumblebee?" I asked Jorden. But of course I knew what was wrong. Jenne giggled and poked Jorden. "Will you stop that!?" Jorden cried. She shoved her sisters hand away, and Jenne raised her arms in self-defence. I handed Jenne her meds, she was 13, so she could take them herself- and pulled up a chair to sit by Jorden's side of the bed. Jorden crossed her arms and made a little, humph noise with her nose.

"Look, Jorden-" I started, but then a doctor burst into the ward.

"Allie, you need to come to the emergency room immediately!" my friend Amy cried. I jumped up, startling  Jenne. "What is it?" I asked as we hurried along the corridor after a quick goodbye to the girls. Amy silently pointed inside the emergency room. It was the man from earlier, and he had fur.

2: 24 Hours And 40 Minutes

-15 years and 11 months later-

The door slammed in my face.

"Bitch," I muttered under my breath, hoisting my bag higher on my shoulder and spinning around on my heel. I looked down at my watch as I walked away from my best friends house, and swore again. It had been exactly 24 hours and 40 minutes since I had kissed Aubrey. I slapped my forehead. It had been such a fucking stupid mistake, I thought to myself. I stubbornly sat down on my porch- I couldn't face my mom right now. Exactly 24 hours and 45 minutes, now.

A bike bell rang and I felt a newspaper hit me on my head. I looked up in a fury to see William biking away, his middle finger raised at me. "Fuck you, Will!" I screamed after him. To my surprise, he turned around and biked back. I blew some hair out of my face and crossed my arms. He dropped onto the porch beside me and offered me a lollypop. I took it from him and flung it over the fence, where it hit the neighbours cat on the head.

"Maggie, what's up? You never turn down candy," he asked me, unwrapping one and sticking it in his mouth. I glared at him. He was only 5 years older then me, but he acted like he was 5 years younger.

I stood up and walked inside the house. I honestly couldn't care less now.

Will propped his head on his palm and asked me to sit back down.

"Why," I said without turning around, my hand still on the doorknob.

"Allie told you that I used to live at the hospital, right?" he asked. I groaned and sat back down. "I guess she did,"

"She told you that my Perkinsens was so bad that I couldn't walk?"

I nodded.

"She told you that I had a seizure every two nights?"

I nodded again.

He sighed and pointed to the sky. "It'll be a Blood Moon tomorrow, first one in a while."

I watched him stand up and walk away. Feeling startled and confused, I walked inside.

24 hours and 55 minutes.
