Prologue: May 17th, 1710 Dublin, Ireland

The lighting crashes, the wind howls, the waves thrashing against the cliffs. Everyone in the village is tucked up safely in their houses waiting out the worst of the storm. The storm a creation of the dark energy that now surrounded the village and created a shield around the village one that would keep all the people in and help from finding them. Closed in by darkness with no hope for escape at least that is how it seemed. The people in the village had no idea what was happening did not see the darkness that surrounded them did not fear the night or what it held within in it. But all things and their normal way of life were about to change.

Somewhere far away from the village out in the fury of the storm standing on a remote cliff stands a young woman. She is covered by a cloak facing out over the dark unforgiving ocean. At a quick glance one would think she had dark intentions standing alone on the cliffs in the heart of that storm but for the light that shined from within her that was hardly able to hold back the darkness and the curtain that it had now drawn around her home and her Village.

Alone in her thoughts consumed by her own sorrow and grief trying to hold back the fear not for herself but for the people she was sworn to protect. The rage of the storm cannot compare to the fury of her own emotions that battled with in her mind and heart. The ocean dark and foreboding beneath her cannot swallow the whole of her own depression.

Frustration, pain, sorrow, anger and even fear raged around inside her threatening to consume her. She throws her hands upwards towards the sky and calls the wind and the lighting to her and she watches as the lighting dances around her. Let’s the wind fly around her whipping her cloak around her letting it fly wildly in the wind.

Her own thoughts race around her head slowly torturing her. How many had she saved? How many had come to her seeking refuge until they could move on? So many villages being torn apart by fear how was she going to stop something so full of hatred and fear? How many innocent lives had she protected? How many more were left? Could she save them or would she fail? Did any of it matter in light of all the innocent lives lost? So many lives had been affected by this and many more would still be. Everything and everyone she knew were changing and the darkness was seeping in everywhere she looked. The people did not see what she saw and she had to protect them however she could.

Her home would never be the same until the threat had passed, her beautiful Ireland so rich in wonder. The land would forever be changed and the dark cloud that now hung over her home it would leave its mark. They had been cut off from everyone by dark magic and could no longer seek refuge outside their own village the evil would be destroyed it had to be. No one could get into the village and no one could get out.

She was called Keelie MacCnáinmín, the Protector of the innocent as it was proclaimed by the Goddess Macha. It was her duty and her honor to serve the Goddess though the weight of her charge lay heavily upon her heart. Her power swirls out into the night searching, seeking the answers far and wide, seeking help if it could hear her plea. She stands on the cliffs riding out the storm. Her hood flies off her head and her raven colored hair whips wildly in the wind. So lost in her sorrow she cannot feel the rush of the wind, the rain cannot wash away her tears. The lighting flashes in her eyes and a fire burns in her heart. Not even the light which burned so brightly within her of the fire of purity which burned within her soul could beat back the darkness of the storm which surrounds her.

Her friend, her sister one whom she trusted with all her heart had betrayed her and her kind. She had turned from her and the path of light, she had been seduced by the darkness in the form of a man and turned to the dark. It broke her heart to see one she trusted so deeply to turn against her to be so easily twisted and manipulated.

If there was no hope for saving her friend and if it came to it she would find a way to bring them both to their fall or would give her last breath trying she had to hold on to the hope that there was some small chance she could save her friend and if there was she would find it but in her heart she knew once you turned from the light most never came back. The dark would not be allowed to win and as long as she drew breath Keelie MacCnáinmín vowed she would find a way to destroy it and restore the light to the land that she loved even if it took the whole of her life or a thousand years she would break the curse and free her people.

For he had come back as he said he would and had placed a curse upon her Village and her people and now they were trapped could not leave the village fear had not yet set in as those in the village had not yet come to realize that they had been cursed. The spell that he had cast once she had not been ready for surrounded the village like a curtain and cut them off from the outside world as if they had been cut off from time all together. Now it would seem when things felt as if they couldn’t have gotten any worse they had now was the time and now she had to fight.

He came to her unafraid of the storm that she herself had some part in creating and wrapped her into his arms. He was her friend her lover the man who held her heart had and always would throughout time and space.

“It is not safe to be near me now” She says not pulling away from him nor does she turn to face him

“I do not fear my love for I know that you could not strike me down even at your angriest. I think it is time that you let go and end this storm and the fury that it has brought.” He says holding tightly to her.

“Iollan, my love you know that I would never and could never harm you for to do so would destroy my own heart.” She says and turns to face him “The storm is just a reflection on the outside of what I feel on the inside. We have failed and with that we have cursed the people of this village into an endless darkness.”

“Let it go love, we will put an end to this curse together.” He says and leans down kissing her gently

Her head spins and the wind, the rain and the fury of the storm drops away just as quickly as she called it. She wraps her arms around him and allows herself for a moment to just get lost in him.

Chapter One: April 17th, 1710

It started with a dream one that would forever change her life and everything she knew. A dream that told of war and death of good and evil, light and dark, Gods and Goddesses verses Demons though this war was waged thousands of years before her birth and just as humans came into existence it would forever change the course of the future if she did not stop the Demon King who had been freed from his cage and had come looking for her. Luckily for her he had not yet realized who she was or where to find her the problem that remained was that he had been taking young women, women with power and putting them in cages trying to find her. She could not imagine what he was doing to them and she feared for their lives, she knew that she would have to face him and she knew that it would have to be soon. Her 18th birthday had passed just three months prior and on the night of her birth as she came of age the dream had come.

She stood on a battlefield in a place she did not know dressed in armor with a sword in her hand. For a moment fear gripped at her heart for she did not know how she had gotten there. She looks around and there are others dressed similar to her and in an instant she knew she was amongst the Gods and Goddess of old. But why was she here? What purpose was there for them to show her this in her dreams? What lesson could they be teaching her?

Everything around her feels so real she can hear everything, smell so many different things, the weight of the sword comfortable in her hand. The armor she is wearing feels comfortable and not too heavy the sounds of battle swirl all around her, the smell of blood and death hangs in the air. Light and dark, shadows and mists all fly around the battlefield she stands somewhere safe while others are out a head fighting. How is it she feels as if she belongs as if all of this is in her blood? The power and the magick that swirls around her fills her in ways she never thought possible. As she looks around she sees him approaching. How is it he is in her dreams? In this place and time thousands of years before either of them were born. He looks as he does now but covered in heavy armor not unlike her own and he smiles warmly at her before holding her close and kissing her lightly on the lips.

And oh that kiss it sends sparks of fire and pleasure coursing through her body, she feels so dizzy and caught up that she has to hold onto him to keep from falling over. How could she feel all of this and not explode? As if their two souls were entwining everything she felt and everything he felt danced around them intensifying everything between them and though the kiss only lasted a few brief seconds it had set off something inside her that she didn’t think she could ever tame again.

There he stood smiling and looking at her as if he owned her very soul and she was more than happy to give it to him.

“Brigid my love the battle draws closer. Promise me that you will be safe promise that I will see you again when this is done.” He pleads with her near tears. That is what love does to you it gives you strength but also breaks you down and destroys you.

mo shíorghrá, I will forever be with you no matter what happens in this time or in the coming hours. Our hearts beat as one now and for eternity, our souls will travel from this life to the next and we shall always find each other in every life and we will always love.” She says the voice not her own deeper and more commanding yet soft and caring.

“Then I shall seek you out in every life so that I may hold you through eternity. We shall not fail this day for if we do the humans of this world that we fight to save will suffer in darkness until the end of days.” He said pulling her close once more “I love you now and I will love you until the end of time and even then no power in the cosmos can separate our love” He kisses her head gently and lets her go

“Not even time can separate us love.” She smiles and releases his hand “But now we have a war to see to.”

“Yes, my lady.” He walks off to get ready.

She looks around again realizing that she is not really her but Brigid a goddess that lived long ago and had faded into legend and song. Brigid was the Celtic goddess of fire, poetry, healing, childbirth, and unity, one of the triple goddesses. Why were they showing this to her? What was there to learn from this? That was what she needed to know and what she needed to learn if she was to find a way to defeat the demon.

Time flashes forward in her mind the battle and it was a bloody battle long and hard won and in the end she is left standing over the Demon, wounded and bleeding near to death but with all she has left she curses him into time. She stood over him bloody and in pain but standing her ground not willing to give in. She gathered her power with everything she had left and faced him.

“You are finished Brigid, even now you are dying.” He smirked and his fangs dripped with blood. “I have won lay down your sword and I will give you a quick death. Fight and I will show you such pain you will be begging for death.”

“I will never bow to you no matter what the reason. I will not allow you to live and will fight you until my last breath.” She said feeling the life drain out of her.

“Then suffer a slow death. I will cause you pain.” He walks closer to her slowly. “You can end this now make it easier on yourself.”

“You will never win for the light will always defeat the dark. Hear my words and hear me now a curse I place upon you now. For a thousands of years you shall sleep, thousands more you shall watch stuck in time with no escape until such time as I return. I shall one day walk this earth among the people a human incarnate. For eighteen more years you shall wait until my human form frees you from your prison. When my human form comes of age and is ready to face you, you will be freed. But know this and know this now to walk the human world you will be weak, and when we once again to meet I shall end you for all eternity. I cast you out into the abyss until the day our paths shall cross again.” She waves her and all of time and space rips open and with the last of her will she throws him in and seals the rip locking him away.

Balor screams as he is pulled into the rip of time and tries to fight his way free as his prison closes and seals locking him away for two thousand years. It is dark and black in space floating around in the nothingness. He looks back just as his eyes and the sleep takes him and sees Brigid lying there on the ground dying. He smiles knowing that at least he had destroyed her and that she would soon draw her last breath.

She looks up at the sky knowing that her time is very short now her breath getting harder and harder to draw. Then she sees him as he runs over to her and cradles her in his arms trying not to weep.

“My love please you cannot die. We can get you to aid just please don’t let go.” He kisses her head and starts to pick her up

“Please love it is too late. I promise you that we will be together again our love can never die. It may take many years but we will see each other again. Listen to me love for time is short now. When we meet again in the human realm I will not remember you though my soul and my heart will know you I will resist. You must find a way to remind me do not allow me to resist love for if I do, if you cannot convince me then all will be lost. It will take the both of us and all the strength we have to stop him once and for all. If we want to destroy him and not curse him we have to find the way to destroy him. I will need you for that.” She says her voice betraying her as she gets weaker and weaker by the moment

“I will do whatever is needed my love. I will not let us fail I swear it to you. Will I know you when I find you?” He asks his tears starting to betray him

“You will not recognize me but your heart will know me for who I am. With my final breath this spell I cast. For when we see each other again your memory of this time shall surface and through your dream you shall remember who we are and where we came from. You cannot tell me any of this for I must remember it on my own. And no my love my time has come. I leave you my heart and all of my soul forever yours and forever entwined.” And with that she takes her last breath and the goddess Brigid dies in the arms of the man she loved.

“No, no please you cannot die.” He cradles her in his arms and cries over her body.

And as she floats away from the dream she looks and sees her body lying on the ground and cannot believe the sight before her when the face looks so much like her own. And everything fades to black.

She had awoken screaming and gasping for breath since her own mother had passed she had no one to turn to in the night. She had written down the words that had come to her in the dream in hopes of finding a way to end the Demon. She had known for all of her life that she would one day have to face this task she had waited and studied and with her mother’s help had grown strong in her power. She had followed many paths and many clues trying to seek him out but now a month later she still had yet to find where he was hiding. She wouldn’t stop until she found and destroyed him.

If she had to pay with her life if that was what fate had in store for her than she would gladly pay the price without question so long as she could destroy this evil once and for all something that she had not been able to accomplish in another life centuries before.

She stood in her workshop a place that was special to her one that she had made her own. She scryed for him in her home protected from his sight she searched seeking him out and when finally she found him in her own Village she knew she had little time to waste. She left her home and the protection she had there and armed with her power and potions that she had been working on for years waiting for this day, a sword should she need it and a bow that her father had given her she went out.

When she finally reached the village she saw him and knew who he was he moment her eyes caught sight of him it was late into the night and he was with someone that she had trusted a friend that she held dear to her heart. She ran as fast as she could but the sight she saw stopped her in her tracks her friend, her sister, was wrapped in his arms as a lover would be. Was she too late had she lost her friend to the darkness and the seduction that came with it? No what she realized was that her friend had been lost long ago and had hidden away the darkness within her so well that not even she had noticed the change.

Then he saw her and smiled but where he should have teeth he had fangs instead and his eyes flashed a dangerous and angry red. He looked like a man on the outside one that every women would be attracted to but underneath was a demon a darkness that if allowed to continue could swallow the world and all the light within it.

He walks towards her slowly smiling at her as if trying to seduce her.

“I knew you would come, I knew the moment I stepped into this little Village that you were here. For centuries now I have waited I have watched and now finally freed I shall finish what we began all those many years ago.” He said his voice so silky and smooth like a song but under it the darkness the evil seeped through.

“I have waited all of my life for this I knew that you would come. I know that you are weak Balor for it was I those centuries ago as a Goddess did curse you into time and into space. But where I may have failed there I shall not fail again make no mistake that I will be the one to end you.” She said standing her ground not an ounce of fear within her

“Brigid my dear Brigid do you really think that you can win? Do you not remember how it was I that killed you an immortal Goddess left for dead. What is it that makes you think that this frail human body you now possess even has the power to destroy me now? You were pathetic then and you are so now when I do away with you again for the second time I will rule this world finally and you will weep watching powerless to stop me.” Oh how the dark oozed from within him and all around him how the ground turned black anywhere he stepped.

“I do not go by that name here Balor but you do not need to know my name now just know that soon I will destroy you and when I do it will be you that weeps at the sight when all the light in the world shines so brightly that it over takes even that of the Sun.” She said not giving him anything She knew that at that moment seeing him with her own eyes that she did not have the power to stop him right then but she would and soon.

“You are weak child go back home you are no longer a goddess and therefore weak, if you want to defeat me call to your friends those you once called family. Oh that is right the Gods and Goddess would not dare step foot upon this ground for that was the price and the treaty made after your death.” He smiles evilly his forked tongue sticking out between his teeth. “They cannot step foot upon this ground or they will forfeit this world to me and those of my kind. No Gods or Goddess with be coming to your aid you are alone and that will be your undoing. Run away child while you still can.”

“You do not scare me and if it is asked then I shall give my last breath to destroy you but if that is what is asked with it I shall curse you into time until the day that I can rise again and end you. Do not take me for a fool Balor you did once and look at where that got you each time I curse you the next you shall come back weaker again. Never underestimate me for that and your arrogance shall be your end.” She said not backing down

“Then let us end this here and now.” He says throwing out his power throwing her across the village square.

She lands hard on her back and has the wind knocked out of her she hears the sound of a horse approaching but cannot move stunned for a moment by the impact. And then a face in front of hers a face that she had only ever seen in her dreams the man that had always been her lover the one that owned her heart.

“Come we must go, this is not the time nor the place for this battle to take place.” He takes her hands and pulls her up.

“I know but I cannot just walk away leaving him to think that I am weak.” She stands and faces Balor again. “Is that the best you have? I promise you that I have much more.” She calls her power to her lets it rise and swirl within and around her and with it she pushes him and her friend who had now betrayed her back and a way causing them to fly far from her and the village.

“They will return.” He says from behind her

“I know for a moment when I saw you I took this all for a dream for that is where I have seen your face before Iollan O’Dubhur.” She turns to face him

“For a moment I feared I was dreaming as well. For your face has been in many dreams of my own.” He smiles and takes her hand and the light that shines between them shines so brightly “Then it is true we are destined to be.”

She smiles “Aye it seems as if that is so”

“I have waited many lifetimes for this moment” He says pulling her close

“As have I love as have I.” She says a moment before his lips capture hers and the light that shines from them both shines brighter than the sun.

Chapter Two:

Somewhere in a cave shrouded in darkness the Demon king paces and screams angrily. Angry that Keelie had gotten away, angry that his power still needed time to grow as it had been so long since he had been locked away. But while he waited in his cage he had found a way to sneak into the dreams of her friend, to seduce her and turn her, he would take what he needed from her and would use her to help capture and destroy her friend. After he was done perhaps he would reward her or cast her aside that he had yet to decide but for now as much as it pained him he needed her to help him while he regained his strength.

Marta stands out of his way as far away as she can frightened by his anger fearing he will strike at her for failing him. Fearing for her life suddenly questioning her decisions to follow him. He had come to her in her dreams and promised her many things, power and control over the world. He was angry that he had been cast aside so easily and his anger scared her, though she fought not to show her fear. How was she to know that when he came through he would barely have any power? It wasn’t her fault and somehow she would not allow him to harm her.

“You should have known it was her all along. She was right under your nose the entire time you insulant women. How could you not see it was her? She was right in front of you all this time. Useless like the rest of them.” Balor screams and continues to pace.

“I am sorry my lord I did not mean to fail you. She hid her power well I could not see it until now. I will not fail you again I swear it.” Marta says trying to calm the quiver of fear in her voice and failing.

“See that you don’t or the next time it will be your life. I want the girl the one I showed to you. Bring her to me and do not fail me. If we can turn her keep her from choosing the light it will help tip the scales to our favor. Bring me Tierney O’Mardha.”

He smiles and his teeth are like fangs and the handsome face that hides them twists to the face of a demon distorted and ugly.

Marta almost recoils from the sight of him but stands her ground.

“As you wish my lord it will be done.” She leaves the cave quickly and flies through the night to Tierney’s home unsure of why this girl is so special. She was not the one that they were looking for no, the one they wanted had been her friend. A friend that she had turned against for something greater something that Keelie could never understand. The Dark was a far better lover than the light and the power that came with it was more that she could ever have dreamed of or hoped for.

Balor the Demon King trapped in time for centuries was now free of his cage and as he paced he thought back to all those centuries ago when he was trapped. A battle between God and Goddesses, the dark versus the light. Darkness had tried to rule the world and as always the light had fought to hold them back. Balor had lead the charge of darkness against those of the light. It was a hard fought battle and lasted many, many years. Brigid had lead the charge of the light along with Morrigan and many others. While the Darkness had put forth a great challenge and had started to beat back the light in the end the light had won. Once the battle had ended it had been Brigid wounded near death that had cursed him with all the power she had remaining.

I cast you out into the abyss until the day our paths shall cross again.” Those were the last words he would hear before he was cast away into the darkness of time and space trapped for centuries with no hope for escape.

Angry and betrayed left to wallow in his prison for centuries none of those that fought with him had ever tried to free him. They had left him to suffer left him to the dark they too would pay for turning their backs on him as would all the humans. The gods would be damned to watch their people the innocents they had sworn to protect suffer and die under his reign. Let them come, let them try and stop him now. No he would build an army an army so vast and dark that not even the gods with all their might could strike him down. This was his time and he would taste justice and victory for all his long suffering as he had been doomed to be locked away forever had it not been for Marta so young in her power had called to the dark  looking, seeking for more power yearning for so much more than she was. He had used that opportunity to call to her to reach out as best he could and had seduced and pulled her to his cause.
He needed to find a way to destroy Keelie to cripple her power as much as he could. She knew who she was and the power she held and that he had not expected.

However he would find others, others that would help him cripple her bit by bit and the more that he could turn to his cause the more power he could amass would help him to destroy her and destroy all the light in the world then the Darkness would reign finally he would achieve the goal that had been ripped from him so long ago. A goal that now seemed much closer for him to achieve as all the Gods and Goddess for all their power did not want to interfere in the dealings of Humans. They have become lore and fairy tales told to children. No they would not come here they would not risk everything they had built so they would be damned to watch as he took and take he would.

Now she had Iollan on her side and that would give her boost he had to find a way to separate them. He had seen her and he had seen him he had been watching them for many years. He did not know all those years that she would be the one to hold the power but he knew that she would be someone that he would have to get rid of or face being destroyed he knew that she was powerful and with that power would be able to amass others to help in his defeat but she did not know everything and if she learned that would be his undoing. Now he knew she was the one and she knew who he was and he knew that it would only be a matter of time before she came and come she would. Let her come let her bring however many she wanted he would be waiting and he would be ready. They were meant for each other Iollan and Keelie and now she was with him there was one thing that the dark hated more than anything and that was love. The strongest of all emotions it strengthened the heart and added to their power. Oh to destroy love from the world to make humans turn against each other and to hate one another that would increase the darkness and hold back the light.

He paces around the cave thinking of all the things that he is going to need and what he should do next. First step was to build an army get more people to his cause. The more darkness together would help to stamp out the light. He had waited so many centuries and watched as the world evolved and as people had claimed the Earth. They were selfish, had no faith and believed in nothing. They believed that they were gods and that the world was theirs. He was going to show them what a true god was and that they owned nothing.

With a few waves of his hand the cave was filled with various tools and ingredients everything he would need to carry out his plan for he knew that he could not just rise to power quickly. No everything had to be done with finesse had to be done carefully or he would lose power. That to his determent was something that he could not overcome. The more light and kindness in the world the more it prevented the dark from growing and taking hold. So he would plan and he would plot and as he did he would slowly start to amass what he needed and when he had everything he would wage war against the light.

He would make the other gods watch as he destroyed everything that they had worked together to save all that they had tried to protect for so long here was his chance at revenge and he would take it. Nothing and no one would stand in his way this time.

Marta stands outside Tierney’s house and watches carefully looking for any signs that anyone is awake. The house is dark and no one seems to be moving around inside. She waves her hand and unlatches the door and slowly makes her way into the house through the kitchen to the stairs. Once up the stairs she looks around and slowly and quietly makes her way to Tierney’s room careful not to wake anyone. As she walks she wonders to herself why Balor wanted her specifically she did not know but Marta was going to do whatever he asked of her. Once inside Tierney’s room she senses her power so raw and new but strong, stronger than she had realized the first time she had seen the girl. Perhaps in her sleep her power unmasked it was easier to sense as when she was awake Tierney was afraid so very afraid of what she was and what it was she held within her.

Marta quickly opens the door to her room and walks in looking around for anyone else that might be asleep she quickly spells Tierney into a very deep sleep so that she will not awake during their journey back to the cave. She takes her hand gently and lifts her hand calling to the wind so that they may fly through the night back to the cave masked in shadow so that no one could see them back to the cave where Balor is waiting for her. Perhaps there is something to be said for newer Witches and when they come into their power, if it can be turned to the dark soon after discovery then it would be strong for the dark or for the light.

Whatever his reasons and whatever his need Marta would help him full fill it for she knew if they won the reward would be great and if they failed. Well she wasn’t ready to think about what failure meant. As they fly over villages and over forest Marta wonders what treasures there are awaiting her once darkness rules the world. She smiles to herself thinking how wonderful it would be the Queen of darkness and to have all the things promised to her by her dark lord.

Balor paces around waiting for Marta to return they would not fail they could not fail for the darkness was stronger than the light because those who swore to do no harm would never cross the lines and do what needed to be done when it mattered most oh no they would stand by their vow to protect the innocent by not getting involved a clash of the gods on human soil would be harmful to all involved and could potentially wipe out all of human existence so they would stay their ground and watch as humanity fell. Gods what did they know they set their players to the field and watched as they fell and what would they do fight oh no they would send more pawns to replace the ones lost until nothing remained and that would be what would be his greatest ally knowing that they would watch and hope for the best but would not make a move to help.

Marta returns to the cave with Tierney and sets her down on a palette on the floor in the corner. “I have done as you asked my lord and brought the girl. If I may ask what are you going to do with her?”

“I am going to use her to help lure out the witch. If we can turn her, her power will be stronger with the dark. New witches are so pivotal if you can turn them soon after they discover what they are their power will be strong for either side. I can use her to help destroy her.” Balor says “And perhaps I need young innocent blood to sire my sons. Perhaps she could be one of them.” He smiles evilly showing his fanged teeth and his eyes glow an evil bright red.

“Yes, my lord.” Marta walks closer to him “What is it you need of me?”

He grabs her and pulls her close kissing her hard with such force if he wasn’t holding her she would be on the floor. Marta grabs on to him holding on tightly kissing him back feeling the power course through her body lighting a fire in her belly. He picks her up and carries her to a large bed on the other side of the cave hidden away and lies her down carefully.

“Give yourself to me and I will make you more powerful than you have ever dreamed possible, when we rule this world I shall make you my queen and you will give me many sons.” He says waving his hand leaving her naked on the bed. “I give you this choice once and only once. For if you deny me I will take what I want accept and I will give you pleasure.”

“I am yours my lord, my body, my soul I give myself to you.” Marta says watching him carefully.
He smirks and with a wave of his hand his clothes are gone if he were just a man what a beautiful man he would be his body hard and well-muscled catching to the female eye and hides a monster underneath. He lies next to her touching her skin gently sending waves of dark pleasure coursing through her body.

“You have chosen wisely, you will give me strong sons and together we shall rule this world and all the others.” He says smiling evilly.

Marta yields to him giving herself over to him and to his whim. He takes her possess her and when they both fall the earth shakes.
