About the author

Hello, I'm holly woodward. I'm 14 years old and from Wrexham. I started to write stories ever since I was able to write and learn English, such as puncation. I wrote the story "The Ugly Duckling" for a school, homework assignment. My teacher said it was the best in the class and she was very happy. My school friends also thought that too. I'm actually going to write more stories in the future. I've started to write a story about a child called charlaya who finds a magical castle. Bit of a child's story. This story is more of a teen story. Ok, enough of me blabbing let's start.

Chapter 1

Hi, I'm Rose, I'm 16 years old and I'm about to graduate from high school. Ive done incredibly well at school, good grades and always top of the class in every subject. I've been a good worker and the ideal pupil. Unfortunately, that's where the best bit ends. When I was stood in the queue waiting to be born, god dealt me good brain cells but forgot to give me any decent looks whatsoever. I'm not sure why my mum called me Rose, maybe when I was born she thought I may turn out like one,I ended up more like a thorn! I was known at school as "The Ugly Duckling"... not very nice for me but then I suppose someone was going to get the title and it just had to be me. I wasn't very popular, painfully shy, so I used to sit in the break time pretending to read a book. Alanna was the most popular girl in the school, stunning looks and all the boys hung on to her every word, including Danny. Danny was a dream, perfect in every way, funny kind, caring and looks to die for. I'd sit and dream that he was mine but sadly he only had eyes for Alanna. Still it gave me something to do on those lonely lunch breaks, dreaming that maybe one day.....

Exams were finished and the hot topic of conversation was the school prom. The chance for everyone to dress up, feel like a grown up for a day but above all, it gave every girl the chance to be a princess. The girls were talking about their dresses, the make up, how they were having their hair styled and the most important what carriage would be taking them to the ball. Alanna and some of the other girls were talking about going in a limousine, that sounded amazing but totally out of my reach. I would be getting there on the bus as my mum didn't drive, slightly embarrassing but i felt if I go there early nobody would see me, not that anybody would be looking at me anyway.

I mentioned it to my mum in the hope that a fairy godmother would come down, wave her magic wand and grant me a ball gown and a carriage. Instead my mum mentioned she had a dress in the cupboard that she hadn't worn for years but would look great on me. I suppose the look on my face said it all, it was far too big, flowery and smelt musty but I smiled, hugged my mum and told her it would be perfect.  Maybe I could pretend to be sick so I didn't have to go, after all, no one was expecting me.

Chapter 2

A week before the prom, I came home from school and found my mum almost jumping for joy, she claimed she had won £300 on a lottery ticket and was going to spend it on me for the ball. Wow, fairy godmothers existed after all. It was fantastic news and although I ensisted my mum spent it on something worthwhile, she said that wasn't an option and arranged to go to town the following day. For the first time in a long time that night, I went to bed with the biggest smile on my face that not even the spiteful girls at my school could wipe off my face.

The day of the prom couldn't come soon enough, my mum had paid for me to have my make up and hair done, had bought me the prettiest dress money could buy and the best thing was it fitted like a glove. Ugly I may be but I had a figure that I did ok with! My mum gasped when I walked into the living room and I must admit, I hardly recognised who was staring back at me in the mirror. I still had to get the bus but that was a small price to pay. I was so nervous, other people walked in with a partner on their arm, I looked slightly out of place on my own but I figured if I walked in with a group, I'd be ok. The room was amazing, money hadn't been spared. The glitter and sparkles were truly magical and brought tears to my eyes. Suddenly the whole room stood still and turned to stare, I'd looked round thinking something was going on behind me. It was then I realised, they were staring at me! I heard a few whispers 'who is that!?' For the first time in my life I didn't feel ugly. I then heard a grunt and a snigger and heard Alanna say, 'it's rose, who does she think she is?' Danny who was previously smitten with everything she said or did, looked at her, frowned and said, 'do you know what Alanna, pretty you maybe but you are really vile underneath all of that and say some hurtful things. Rose is the most caring person I know and is always willing to help others, I clearly came with the wrong girl tonight' I couldn't believe my ears, Danny had noticed me before!! How?! He even knew my name! This really couldn't be happening to me. I closed my eyes thinking I was dreaming and when I opened them, Danny was stood infront of me.  'Rose, you look incredibly pretty tonight but most importantly you have a heart of gold, could I ask you to dance?' I linked his arm and walked with my head held high onto the dance floor. I glanced back over my shoulder and saw the look on Alanna's face..... that soon wiped the smile off her face!
