THE EVERLASTING VOICES

O SWEET everlasting Voices, be still;

Go to the guards of the heavenly fold

And bid them wander obeying your will,

Flame under flame, till Time be no more;

Have you not heard that our hearts are old,

That you call in birds, in wind on the hill,

In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore?

O sweet everlasting Voices, be still.

W.B. Yeats

‘The Wind and the Reeds’ 1899

Introduction

One year ago the body of Zachary Smith was lowered into the ground of the New Crest Cemetery located just outside of Blackstone. The eulogy was given by one Reverend Jackson. He referred to Zachary Smith as the man of God who ‘lost his way.’ Considering the damage that Zachary did, this was an understatement. Zachary Smith had not only lost his way – he stirred numerous followers in the wrong direction as well. The body count was never accurately tallied.

When the police raided his church, after the self-appointed Prophet was dead, what they found was to vulgar to accurately describe. As had been relayed to the Major of Blackstone, there was another body found. She was young, but what the grand prophet did to her was not only immoral – it was shameless. And what they discovered in the woods behind his house was shocking. The police had no way of knowing how many bodies there were. They always suspected there were more.

The Grand Prophet met his demise at the hands of three people who had not fallen under his spell. In fact, they were considered the enemy. The Prophet had them marked for death.

But death was not in their cards that day. In fact, the only death they would encounter was that of the Prophet. And it was all filmed and broadcast over local channels. Those present in the audience were shocked beyond belief.

When the Prophet was dead, awe went through the crowd. For some it was a relief. For others it was the end of the world. For Zachary Smith it was the end of a dream, the end of a mission, and the end of his life.

Things had not been the same sense. It took a long while for it to recover. Some said it never had. And if you could listen to the aura hovering over the community – you just might agree. The spirit of spiritual victory was replaced by doubt and disillusionment. Churches had lost even more members. The offerings were down so much that many churches closed down permanently.

It was a sad day in Blackstone. The light that once led the community was no longer there. Darkness loomed everywhere. The Blackstone Sentinel would call it ‘their darkest hour.’

There were many more to come. The nightmare was far from over.
