Career Options for Actors, and Keeping Sharp While You Wait

There is a common misconception that there are not a lot of job opportunities out there for actors. The reality is that there are many different directions a person can go with their acting career. Television, movies and theater represent only a small portion of the jobs out there for an actor. If a person is serious about acting and not only in it for the fame and fortune, then they have many chances to find a great job in other areas.

The largest paychecks for actors are in film. This is also the area that has the least amount of job openings. Film parts are highly competitive and they are not easy to score for someone that has not become established in Hollywood. Actors in movies can make millions of dollars per project. Pay is largely dependent on their popularity because producers pay more for those actors that can fill the most seats at a theater.

Television actors may not get paid as much as those in film, but they benefit from a steady job and steady paycheck. Television series can run for years and if they are popular it could last a decade or more. Television actors often get paid thousands of dollars per episode.

These jobs are still quite competitive, but there is always a chance for new actors to get a job in television.

Theater actors can work on stages around the world. The theater is a great starting point for beginners, but it offers the most earning potential for seasoned actors. To be in theater, though, a person really must be considered a triple threat, which means they can sing, act and dance. Not every actor will meet this requirement.

Besides these big three opportunities, actors can also get work at amusement parks, on the radio, in nightclubs, in commercials and in education. Amusement parks hire workers to play the parts of characters. Some parks put on shows which allow actors to perform in plays or dances. Radio performers may host a radio show or do voice over work. Nightclubs may hire people for stage shows. Commercials are a great opportunity because they are produced all the time and usually use new actors.

The pay for these other types of acting jobs can vary greatly. Pay is almost always based upon reputation and experience no matter what type of job an actor has. Even in smaller parts, an actor with some name or face recognition will earn more than a complete beginner. Salaries usually start at about $24,000 a year and can go up into the millions of dollars for the top earners in the industry.

Acting is not always an easy profession. It often requires living in California, New York or somewhere that the jobs are normally found within the industry. Competition is fierce and an actor can go months without a job. However, earnings are usually quite high, so one job could carry you through months without work. Actors should think about all the opportunities out there and not become too focused on just getting the big gigs. This will help them to avoid periods without any earnings sam levinson agent.
