Chapter 1

The idea of a bike tour is not as new as the e-bike. Who does not like to remember cozy rides on the good old Dutch bike along the coast of the North Sea? As beautiful as such a trip can be, there have always been one or two disadvantages. For example, it is known that the sea is windy, which does not necessarily make cycling easier and can also reduce joy.

A little help in the form of electric motors seems more than attractive. The e-bike has long ceased to be an insider tip and offers many an advantage in terms of health, ecology and, last but not least, a fun way to take it. As with so many things, there are a number of things to consider in order to enjoy your vacation and all these advantages without any worries. Good planning is usually an advantage. The following questions, for example, determine the success of your pedelec vacation: How can I get my best electric mountain bike wherever I want to ride it? Is transportation possible in all types of public transport? How do I get my e-bike in or on my car? What else do I have to think about?

There are important questions to ask, but not one that should be in the way of the trip.

So you can take your e-bike safely on vacation
The e-bike should not only sweeten your holiday in the nature around the corner, but also elsewhere or even in other countries. So it must not only be mobile for driving to the destination, but also for transport. Depending on the means of travel, there are different things to consider and useful information to avoid small and large annoyances.
Regardless of how you end up on vacation, there are a few general tips. In order not to worry about the safety of your e-bike in the bicycle compartment or generally parking it on the go, it is certainly not a mistake to take out insurance and therefore play it safe. Especially since the train only reimburses the loss when using the luggage service and only up to a certain amount. Different types of insurance, such as ENRA, offer special e-bike insurance. In addition, a good lock is of course not only recommended when traveling, but also in everyday life, which protects your e-bike against theft. An incomplete e-bike can easily be stolen. Also keep in mind that some insurance companies may not work if the parking space or the lock does not meet the requirements. It makes sense to invest in a good lock for the e-bike before you go on vacation.

The e-bike on the plane
Unfortunately, it is not possible to take e-bikes on a plane according to current standards, since the batteries for e-bikes or pedelecs store the energy in lithium-ion cells and these are considered dangerous goods. There may still be a way to fulfill your wish to travel with the e-bike in Malta, South America, Canada or anywhere else.

The easiest is certainly to find out in advance whether there is the possibility to rent an e-bike on site. There are also distributors abroad, such as the e-motion dealers in Germany and Switzerland. It makes sense here, as elsewhere, not to make a reservation on vacation, so that local rental companies have enough time to prepare your e-bike.

In this way, you can save yourself frustrating conversations with the staff of the respective airline and you have one piece of luggage less to look out for in the hectic pace of an airport.

The e-bike on the train
It will certainly be reassuring for one or the other that taking e-bikes or pedelecs on the trains of Deutsche Bahn, on the other hand, is quite unproblematic, just like that of an ordinary bicycle. All you need is a bike ticket and a parking space reservation in addition to the actual ticket and you're ready to go. The surcharge for journeys across national borders is only slightly higher. It should be noted that ICEs generally have no parking spaces for bicycles. In City Night Line, IC and EC trains and in local transport, however, the possibility is usually given. In addition, there is even the option to send the e-bike on vacation via the luggage service of the train.

If you want your e-bike to start the journey with you, it is a good idea to remove the battery before you get on the train. This makes it a little easier to carry over the sleeper or up any steps. It also protects the battery from damage that could result from tipping over in fast trains. There are special padded pockets that ensure that nothing happens to your e-bike battery.

The e-bike in the car
One or the other would certainly prefer to travel in their own car over long distances. One or more bicycles on the roof of a car are not an unusual sight during the holiday season. Doing the same with the e-bike is just one of several options available to you.

1. The e-bike in the trunk
If you have a large car or even a motorhome, transporting the e-bike is not a problem as long as you can lash it down properly and it won't fly around your ears. It is advisable to transport the battery separately here as well as on the train to protect it from knocks and damage. The separate transport also makes it easier to hoist the e-bike into and out of the car.

2. Folding and compact e-bikes on vacation
If the trunk of your car is not larger than average, there is no reason to despair. In this case, the folding and folding e-bike provides the necessary flexibility for transport. Folding is done in a few simple steps, you have gained all the advantages of an e-bike and a lot of space for luggage and various souvenirs from your vacation. You save yourself the need for an extra luggage rack and do not have to laboriously maneuver your e-bike off the roof. While other holidaymakers are still working on releasing and lifting, all you have to do is take your e-bike out of the trunk and fold it out. The battery is quickly replaced and you are on the way to the sea or up the mountain.
Another practical variant is the compact e-bike, which, although not foldable like a folding or folding bike, is very easy to adjust, is particularly light in weight and also takes up less space in the car. This option also makes it possible for you to explore the area in an uncomplicated and easy way using electric motors when traveling.

3. The e-bike on the rear luggage rack
If you already have your own e-bike and it is not a folding or folding bike, things can get more difficult in an average trunk. Not everyone has the desire or the possibility to tow the e-bike onto the roof. If this is the case, it can still go on vacation with the rear luggage rack on the back of the car. There are different models in which you can transport up to four e-bikes. This means that the whole family or the whole clique can travel with an electric motor when traveling. As a rule, rear luggage racks can be easily folded down from the car and packed together.
When buying, make sure that the rear luggage rack is really suitable for your model. Not everyone is geared towards e-bikes, and it is well known that pedelecs come in various sizes. If your e-bike is operated with a seat tube battery, for example, it is probably too long for a conventional luggage rack for bicycles. To make sure that everything fits together and there are no unpleasant surprises waiting for you on your departure, it is best to take your e-bike with you to the shop of your choice and ask which rear luggage rack could be the right one for your purposes.
