Chapter 1

The Queen has already outlived all of her children, some of her grandchildren, and one of her great-grandchildren has even had a close encounter of death. Not the Queen. The health scares she's had have always been resolved within a day's time without any complications. If William had not been probed for questioning by an American reporter, he may not have even noticed it either. Grandparents are often immortalized by their grandchildren, it was natural.

"Prince William, if I may ask, with the recent health problems your family has encountered lately, is there any concern about the Queen?", asked Payton Patterson.  "How is she responding to the recent deaths of Prince Charles and Prince Harry?".  "She is taking it rather well, I suppose", Prince William asked with a sullen tone. "Too well, perhaps?".  "What are you inferring, Ms. Patterson?  If you are speaking of the conspiracy theories rising about my grandmother's well-being, I am afraid I will have to dismiss you. I have no time for this nonsense".  "But, Prince William, you've never questioned it?  You've never felt it is odd?  You don't ever imagine taking over the throne and wonder how long it's going to be before you can?".  "It's time for you to go now", replied Charles.

As Payton left the Buckingham Palace garden, she thought about her line of questioning. Was it a dumb thing to do? No, it wasn't.  Regardless of if the the interview would be deemed as successful or not, the questions had to be asked.  It is rather strange how Americans question everything their government throws at them (although it really hadn't been that long since they had started doing so), but England never does. Never. They think not knowing protects them somehow.  Payton couldn't imagine not ever questioning anything.

Prince William watched Ms. Patterson leave the garden, escorted out by the Royal Guard.  Where was she going with her questioning? Did she know something William didn't?  Why would a reporter come all the way here, to England, to question a member of the Royal Family just about a silly conspiracy theory?   Americans know the throne holds no real authority anymore.  William admitted to himself that he had questioned it before, but it was ingrained in him by his nannies to never question the Queen. His   It seemed as if everyone she disagreed with, or thought of as an embarrassment, died.  Sure, his father was rather old in his death at 102 years old, but the Queen was rather disappointed in him. He was set to marry a 25 year old model next week and Grandmother had thrown quite a fit over it.

Payton looked back at the Prince a final time before exiting the garden. She had gotten to him. She saw follow-up interviews in the future, and a call-back from the Prince wanting to know what she knew; and she did know something.  She knew plenty.
