Fix issues with Yahoo Account Key

Introduction

Account Key boosts security by sending a prompt to your mobile phone instead of using a password to access the account. Use this guide to answer any questions or address any issues that may come up.

Turn off Account Key

If you want to go back to using a password, learn how to disable Account Key.

Use two-step verification

You can't use two-step verification with Account Key. If you want to go back to using a password, disable Account Key and enable two-step verification.

Not receiving an Account Key

Try the following first:

Still not getting an Account Key:

  1. Go to the Yahoo sign-in page.
  2. Enter your email address | Click Next.
  3. Click Use text or email to sign in.
  4. Enter the missing digits of your phone number | Click Submit.
  5. If you have access to this phone, click Yes, text me an Account Key.
  6. Don't have access? You'll get the option to verify your alternate email address instead.
  7. Tap or enter a verification code to confirm.
  8. Click Continue to access your account.

Third-party apps stopped working

To use some older third-party apps, you'll need to generate an app password to access your Yahoo Mail.

Can't sign in because of "Uh-oh" error message

You'll have to wait 24 hours before trying to sign in because you exceeded the number of text messages allowed per day. After 24 hours, sign in using the Yahoo Mail app on your mobile phone.

Set up a new phone or number to receive Account Key

Set up a new phone:

  1. Install the Yahoo Mail app.
  2. Open the app and tap Sign in.
  3. On the sign-in page, enter your username and tap Continue.
  4. View the notification sent to your old phone.
  5. On your new phone, confirm the code and tap Sign in.

Can't access my old phone:

Use a desktop computer to send the Account Key to your alternate email.

  1. Go to the Yahoo sign in page.
  2. Enter your email address | Click Next.
  3. Click I don't have access to this phone and you'll see your alternate email.
  4. If the email is correct, click Yes, send me an Account Key.

If you're not using your old phone again, sign out of the Yahoo app that you were using.

Set up a new phone number:

If you get a new phone number but keep using the same phone, follow the steps below.

  1. Sign in to Yahoo Account info page and click your existing number.
  2. Click Add recovery phone number.
  3. Enter your new phone number.
  4. Click Send SMS.
  5. Tap or enter a verification code to confirm.
  6. Click Verify.
