How It All Got Started

"I'll do anything, Jayna!" Helen Fierro proudly boasted.

"Anything?"

"I'll prove it to you. I'm not a sore loser."

"So you're saying you'll lose?"

"No. Geez, just tell me what you want already."

"Ok, you asked for it Helen. To prove that you can keep your calm under all situations, you must do all the following in a week: raise a million dollars, become famous online, find a Crimaladin necklace I lost in Argentina, talk to at least one head of state over the phone, lose fifty pounds."

"Way to insult my overweighness. I'll have you know I've lost ten pounds since school started. I'm now one hundred and sixty!"

"You are also sixteen."

"How much do you weigh?"

"Ninety-nine."

"Shut the hell up."

"So are you up for the challenge?"

"It sounds difficult."

"Chicken."

"Fine. I'll do it. You're on!"

The two girls had been sitting on a white bench in the Arilstile Park, having their usual Saturday break. Since they became friends at age thirteen, they have always met up at the park every weekend, except when they were sick. They did homework there some afternoons and since the area was so large and the grass so luscious, they often carried their younger siblings to play.

The promise that Helen made to Jayna is way more complicated than it sounds. If it wasn't already.

Always listen carefully to a deal before you make it.
