Fable

“…Happily ever after,” concluded the mother with a smile as she closed the book and bent over to kiss the sleepy child on the forehead. As she turned off the light she thought she heard a shifting sound coming from under the bed. She paused for a second and then quietly left the room.

From underneath the bed a little fairy came to play.  Unbeknownst to the sleeping child, she gently touched her golden curls and waved her magic wand.  She took the book of spells into her hand as she watched the glow of fairy dust above the bed.  With her tiny finger she starts to write.  Then, softly into the darkened sky of night, she flew away.  Tomorrow a new adventure would begin.

Dust

It was the third day that she saw dusty footprints up and down her stairs. She gritted her teeth. How much longer would this project last she wondered nervously.

She wiped the stairs yet again. Outside, she heard the little birds in the tree as she checked the locks once again and wondered how he had managed to get into the house as the only key, was in her hand. She knew that the prints of dust were just a warning to the person that she had become that someone else was in control of who she had been. The time had come for her to tell. If only she could change what happened then, she would have a happy life and he wouldn’t need to know that she had moved on from what was once their happy life.

Life

As she took the exit from the highway, she thought about her decision just one more time and decided that she had just one life and that she was going to be the one to decide about it.

One the one hand there was the wealthy Californian still living with his mother and on the other hand, the school teacher from Illinois with the 13-year old daughter. She smiled; determined to call both of them tonight about her decision. Then she missed the detour sign and drove off the edge of the bridge at full speed.
