Chapter 1

Simon Garrison sneered to himself as he peered down the crowded city sidewalk. About half a block east of his position, a man in a large winter coat was standing at an ATM, looking frustrated.

"Gotcha," Simon muttered under his breath, and began walking.

Within seconds, he was beside the man, his fist clenching around the insulated fabric over the man's chest, and with preternatural strength, he spun his victim around and slammed him against the wall beside the ATM. A blazing bloodlust gleamed in his eyes as he watched his intended victim cringe in pain from the impact.

"What the hell, man?!" the man exclaimed.

Simon opened his mouth, ready to speak, when a deep voice of authority interrupted. "What's going on here, gentlemen?"

He turned his head to his left, where a pair of uniformed cops were approaching at a brisk pace. A voice cried out silently from the back of Simon's mind, No! Get out of here! He'll try to kill you, too!

Shut it, human, commanded the being in control of the body.

"Hey, Wade," said the first cop, the one with the deep voice. "Isn't that Bart Winston?"

Simon watched as the second cop peered at the man against the wall, and a bulb of recognition lit up in his eyes. "It is! You got your cuffs on you?"

"Never leave home without them."

Simon whipped his head from the cops to the man he'd intended on killing, then finally noticed a laptop in his hand with a long cord connected to the ATM beside them.

"What?" was all he could say.

"Good job, son," the first cop said. "You just caught one of the most elusive bank robbers of the decade."

Simon stared, blinking in shock. "What?"

Did he just catch a criminal?

“Can you come back with us to the precinct?” asked the second cop. “You know there’s a reward for this guy, right? A hundred grand?”

Inside his head, a laugh arose from the body’s original soul, and “Simon” fought down the urge to snarl. The demon inside was furious, had been since he first possessed the young man at the stroke of midnight the night before. His entire mission had been to ruin Simon’s life.

But something was preventing him from doing so. Since that day started, he’d forced his host to quit his lousy part-time job at the grocery store, only to find out that he’d been selected amongst the one-third to be laid off due to budget cuts anyways. On his way out, he’d grabbed the prettiest woman there and planted a kiss on her, only for her to blush and ask, “What took you so long?”

And now this. Simon was going to be receiving a hundred thousand dollars in reward for catching a thief that he’d intended to kill in broad daylight.

Screw this, the demon thought. I’m not waiting until midnight to leave this host. I’m out!

Which is exactly what he did.
