Chapter One

It was night, the full moon was high in the sky. The bright light slipped through the trees of the forest, and was scattered across the leaf strewn ground. Two figures stalked through the woods, following a large buck. They stopped in their tracks, when the deer looking up from grazing. There was no movement, and the deer returned to eating. The two figures a small female, and a larger male, looked at each other, letting out a sigh of relief. From somewhere deeper in the woods was a loud snapping sound and the deer started, the chase was on. They both ran through the forest in pursuit of the deer, dodging trees, bushes, and large stumps. They leapt over fallen logs, and ducked under low hanging branches. The female figure took off to the right and cut in front of the deer. She grabbed it with her hands and swiftly snapped its next, killing the animal instantly and without pain. The deer fell to the ground, a blank stare gazing back at them. They bared fangs, and quickly began feeding on the lifeless creature. Another figure stepped out of the shadows making a move towards the carcass. They snarled at the approaching male, blood dripping from their mouths onto the ground around them.
“Back off, this is our kill.” The first male threatened.
The lone creature stalked around the animal, and the girl stepped over the body to meet the scavenger. She extended sharp claws from her finger nails, and lunged forward slashing at the other male. He grabbed her wrist and threw her to the other side of the clearing. He was on top of her in a flash, but just as quick she was back on her feet, landing a hard kick that sent him flying through the air. Following through, she grabbed him by the throat, and slammed him up against a tree.
“We don’t look too kindly on scavengers around these parts, find your own kill.” She snarled
“I… Sorry, it won’t happen again.” He managed to reply weakly. She could see genuine fear in his eyes, and felt pity on him. She threw him to the ground.
“Get out, we don’t want to catch you trying to scavenge again.” She warned.
He scrambled to his feet, and left the area as fast as he could.
“Well, he won’t be bothering us any time soon.” She stated. The two of them returned to feeding, and continued out late into the morning.
Eli and Jodi slipped into the classroom just before the bell rang. Mr. Boyce looked at them disapprovingly, but they ignored him and grabbed a seat at the back of the class. Mr. Boyce stood up as the bell sounded and moved to the front.
“Today we are joined by a new student.” He replied, indicating to a tall blonde boy sitting in one of the front desks.
“Would you like to tell us a little about yourself?” Boyce asked. The boy stood up and faced the rest of the class.
“My name is Patrick, I am 16 years old, and I enjoy hunting.” He replied, the returned to his seat.

Jodi and Eli sat down at a table near the edge of the lunchroom, away from the other students.
“That was the vampire from last night.” She whispered to him.
“But why is he here? I wasn’t aware of any others around this area.” Eli answered back.
“Well, I guess we are about to find out, here he comes.” Jodi responded motioning towards the approaching boy.
“You must be wondering what I’m doing here.” Patrick stated as he took a seat beside them.
He didn’t wait for a response from them, just kept talking.
“I was turned two months ago, by a pair when I was vacationing in New York. They killed my family and I have been on the run ever since. I happened upon this small town three days ago, I figure it’s small enough that they will leave me alone here.” The boy explained.
“I didn’t expect to find anyone else here like me, but then I saw you two in the forest last night, and I felt like maybe I had a chance to find safety with you both around.” He continued.
“How do we know we can trust you?” Jodi asked
“I don’t know anything about being a vampire, that last two months have been hell. I need your help. Please?” Patrick responded, almost sounding pained.
“Well, I supposed we could bring you to Saundra, she might be able to house you for a while.” Eli said.
“She is our guide. Despite us being close to twice her age, she has a lot of wisdom. Her and her grandson keep us up to date on style, help us fit in to different generations.” Eli continued, seeing Patrick’s look of confusion.

Chapter Two

They soon arrived at a small cottage, it was a homely building. White washed walls with a brown thatched roof, overlooking a small lake. It was only a five minute walk through the forest, but secluded enough that the habitants could freely practice their magic without fear of being seen. The enchantments placed around the vicinity seemed to help a lot as well with keeping out unwanted guests.

Saundra was working in the garden, gathering medicinal herbs she used for healing. Hugo was nowhere to be seen, but probably by the lake reading a book of some kind, most likely to do with spells or magical creatures. He was a small dark haired boy who was eagerly taking in his new found powers.

“Hello my young friends.” Saundra called out to them, looking up from her gardening. A look of concern crossed her face upon seeing a strange face following Jodi.

“Don’t worry Saundra, he is a fledgling, just came to us this morning.” Eli explained noticing her discomfort.

“Well then, in that case, welcome to the Haven. I hope you will be staying with us for a while.” Saundra said with a smile that lit up her whole face.

Patrick nodded, unsure of what to say.
“Thank you,” He managed to squeak out shyly.

“He was turned two months ago, and has asked our help in teaching him, well everything I guess.” Jodi explained. “I don’t see why we wouldn’t be able to take in another one, it’s been quite some time since we had a fledgling in our coven.” She continued.
