Hate Loving You

Chapter I

I put in my earphones, trying to tune out the world. I leaned towards the window, resting my head against the cool surface as I pictured myself being in a music video. The detention room was very boring that even the teacher had fallen asleep. There was no one else in the room, so I closed my eyes, trying to get some sleep. Hopefully, the 2 hours would flew by fast.

I almost jump out of my seat when I felt something touching my shoulder. I quickly swatted it away in reflex and saw that it was only another guy, who was as surprised as me. "Don't touch me." I hissed and closed my eyes again, but I couldn't fall asleep anymore. Great.

"Hey." When I heard him through my music, I turned it up so that it would block off the world. Completely. Satisfied that I couldn't hear him anymore, I began staring outside the window and zoned out. I was pulled back out of my daydream when I felt him trying to tickle me. I sighed and took off my earphones, annoyed.

"What do you want?"

"You're pretty."

"Thanks." I replied, uninterested as I scrolled through my song list. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him staring at me like he couldn't believe what he just heard. "What?"

"Nothing! It's just that um..."

"Well if it's nothing then stop staring. It's rude." I chose a song and put my earphones back in. This time, I stared at the ceiling fan rotating slowly. Suddenly my vision was half blocked when another guy stood beside the first guy.

"Yo dude, let's ditch." I heard him said.

"I'll pass. I think I wanna stay here."

"What?!"

"You heard me."

"Fine, whatever." The second guy muttered as he shoved his hands into his jacket pocket and left the room.

"Why would you want to stay here?" I asked, finally putting my earphones away.

"Oh now you're interested?" He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow cockily.

"Well if you don't wanna tell me, fine. Ain't my problem." I started searching for my novel when he stopped me, "Hehe, I'm just kidding."

"I wanna get to know you. I'm Jack Parker." He extended his hand. I stared at it suspiciously for a solid 5 seconds before shaking it, "Chloe Campbell." He smiled brightly when I said my name. Maybe I shouldn't have. His name rang a bell, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Yeah I know he's the bad boy of the school, the heartthrob of the school, whatever you wanna call him, but his name sounded awfully familiar in another sense.

"So," He drawled, "What brought you here?"

I rolled my eyes, "Well I was brought to this world from my mother's womb. You wanna know details of how I got into the womb?"

He shook his head vigorously. "Good." I nodded slightly.

"You know that's not what I meant."

"Fine," I sighed, "I was late okay? First time I'm late, but I guess the school doesn't care that you get straight As or anything. You're late? Detention it is. What about you?" I ended up rambling without knowing. Good thing I stop before I revealed my darkest secrets.

"As usual, drawing on the bathroom mirror." When I raised an eyebrow he continued, "That and a few others." . . . "Including breaking a locker door. Accidentally. Releasing goldfishes into the fountain and organized a fishing competition. What? It was fun while it lasted. Summoning a demon. Taking books out of the library without the card. Accidentally broke a microphone. Give Mr Harrow's talking pigeon sausages-"

"Whoa hold up. That pigeon is vegetarian. VEGETARIAN."

"Yes I know, I'm sorry, I didn't know before."

I rolled my eyes. Ignorance sure is bliss. The bell rang - fortunately - and I grabbed my bag, rushing to the door, ignoring Jack who was calling my name.

Whatever.

---

I stared at the sad excuse of a pizza lying on the plate in front of me. I gave my sister a 'really?' look and she shrugged, "Hey, what do you expect? I can't even boil water." I sighed and sunk my teeth into the gooey cheesy mess she call a pizza, grateful that at least I'm not eating charcoal like what she usually cook up. "We're getting take-outs." I mumbled, called the Chinese Restaurant and she just drawled, "Kaaaay."

The doorbell rang, and I opened it, still holding my paper plate. "Bell?" I asked, letting my half eaten pizza slice drop onto my marble floor with a 'squish'. Neither of us paid any attention to the soiled food, and my whole attention was on Bell's appearance. Her shirt was hanging off one shoulder and her skirt was half wet half dried up tears. Her make up was smeared and her braid was loose. "Come in," I opened the door wider. "What happened to you?"

"I-I was dumped!" She bawled, her nose stuffed. "Wait, calm down, calm down, sit on the couch. Let me get you a hot chocolate." I walked to the kitchen, "With lots of marshmallows!" She yelled after me.

I gave her the mug brimming with hot chocolate and marshmallows, and when she had a sip, she calmed down almost immediately. "Okay, tell me what happened. From the beginning. Slowly." I rubbed soothing circles on her back. She choked back a sob, "So I was waiting for my boyfriend in the parking lot when I got a text from him. I thought he was just gonna be late so I didn't open it but later I found him with his arms around another girl. I ran to the bathroom and opened his text, and I was right! Jack Parker dumped me through a text!" She bawled again.

"Wait, who?"

"Jack Parker." So that's why the name was so familiar. Bell had mentioned it so many times before, I just never really paid attention.

"Holy son of a bi-" I gasped at his way of breaking up with my best friend when the doorbell rang. "Imma gonna get it. Wait a sec." I said and Bell nodded. As I zoomed past the kitchen I saw my sister secretly trying to eat all the cereal. She almost choked when she caught me glaring at her. The doorbell rang again. "Yeah wait!" I said, a little annoyed at the impatient stranger. I opened the door to find the Chinese Restaurant delivery boy, holding what I assumed was my order.

My jaw dropped.

It was Jack-fucking-Parker.

Chapter II

"Uh, hey!" He said, as surprised as me when he saw me opening the door. I scowled at him, snatched my order, and threw the money at his face before slamming the door shut. I put the plastic bag on the coffee table and sat beside Bell, suddenly losing my appetite. "Who was that at the door?" Bell asked, sniffling into a tissue. "A... Delivery boy." I sighed.

Bell's stomach growled at the same time as my sister came in the living room, cereal crumbs stuck to her cheeks. "Let's eat." I offered Bell the take out. "What about me?" My sister whined. "None for you, Jazz. You ate all the cereal." Bell snorted a laugh, but disguised it as a cough. Jazz rolled her eyes and went to her room.

---

I was doodling on my notebook when someone generously plopped their butt down on my table, blocking half of my notebook. "What's the big idea?!" I looked up to see Jack frowning back at me. "That's what I should be asking you! What's with yesterday?!" He yelled back. "Whatever Jack. Don't let me be the one to tell the whole class that you're working as a delivery boy." I muttered, trying to pull my notebook out from under his big butt. "You threw money at my face! Don't your parents ever taught you about politeness?!" Now the whole class was staring at us. I was embarrassed, but I was also very angry. "You," I poked his chest angrily, "Broke my bestie's heart! You deserved that rude reaction!" He seemed taken aback by my retort.

"Who are you talking about?!"

I rolled my eyes. I forgot he was a player. "Bell McDavy. Ring any bells? Find me when you get that name out of your thick skull." I collected all my stuff and changed seats, far away from his.

---

"You okay?" Bell asked me during lunch. "Yeah. What makes you think I'm not?" I answered. "Uh... Cause you're literally stabbing your meatball." She pointed to my meatball that was pulverized by my fork. "Great. Meatball powder." I scooped it up and wolfed it down ravenously. What? I was hungry, and I need to take my mind off of things with that stupid Jack.

You know what he did? He followed me around all the time until I had to run away like a lunatic. I just didn't want to deal with him. He hurt Bell, my best friend since childhood, and he's gonna pay for that. That's what I thought at first, but it proved to be harder than I thought. That was why now I sat in the cafeteria with Bell, a scowl on my face. If looks could kill, anyone except Bell would be six feet under. Especially Jack Parker.

Suddenly Bell's face became pale. "What ish it?" I asked, my cheeks stuffed. "It's... Jack..." She whispered. She tugged at her long pink sleeve and faced down on the table. "Don't call him over please..." She whispered, gasping as if she was scared. "Of course I wouldn-" Jack suddenly sat beside me. "What do you want?!" I spat angrily. Bell visibly shuddered. "Whoa, easy there." He held his hands up and gave me a sheepish grin. I scoffed, "Just tell me what you want from me."

He boldly caressed my cheek, "I wanna make it up to you, you know, for whatever I did to offend you." I slapped his hand away, "Are you serious?! Get away from me!" I grabbed Bell's quivering hand and dragged her away, "Come on Bell, let's leave this jerk." Bell willingly let me drag her.

"Wait-" Jack called out but was stopped by one of his friends. We didn't look back.

---

We both sat down at the bench behind the glasshouse. It was a beautiful place, hidden by the vines and moss. I rubbed soothing circles on Bell's back, poor Bell, she looked really scared. Something must be wrong, "Bell? Are you okay?"

"I'm not okay." She shook her head, crying.

"Why do you look so scared?"

"It's Jack... I-I'm scared of him..."

"Why are you scared of him..?"

She quivered, "He hurt me! He's a psychopath!"

"A psychopath? For breaking up with you?" I knew she loved him and the break up really hurt her but calling him that for breaking up? That seemed a little too much.

"No, not that," She rolled up her sleeves and I gasped in horror. Her inner arms were black and blue with red scratches, "He did this."

I grabbed her arm and she hissed in pain, "Why did you never tell me?! This is serious!"

"I can't!" She exclaimed, lifting up her shirt, revealing more bruises on her stomach. Now I understood why she always wore long shirts after dating him. "Why not?"

"Because," Bell clasped her hands in fear and looked around, "He's blackmailing me!" She whispered with wide eyes.

Chapter III

I stormed over to Jack, who was talking and laughing freely with his friends, and slapped him hard across the face. The whole class stopped what they were doing and stared at us. Jack looked up to me in confusion and anger, "What the hell?"

"How dare you!" I screamed, "How dare you blackmail Bell!"

Instead of denying it, his eyes darkened and he stared at me dangerously, but there was also slight concern. "Let's talk somewhere private." He dragged me and I let him, because I didn't want more prying eyes into our matters.

We stopped in an empty classroom. I crossed my arm and narrowed my eyes, "Start talking."

He sighed, "Look, call me weird but I've been watching you for a while now and-"

"You what?! Never mind, keep talking, stalker." I spat that last word with much disgust.

He flinched, "Okay so, I've been watching you, and I thought that Bell was acting weird so I decided to watch her instead but-"

"Just tell me what's going on! I don't need your backstory!"

"Bell is planning to hurt you! And I mean, really hurt you."

"What?! Nonsense! I gave you a chance to explain and this is what you do?! I'm outta here." I stormed to the door. He grabbed my wrist, "It's not what you think!" He pleaded, "Please, just listen!"

"Let me go, you sicko!"

"You have to trust me!"

"And why should I do that?"

"Because-!... Just because...."

I shook my head and snatched my hand away, "Whatever. Stop blackmailing Bell, you sicko."

Just before I close the door behind me I heard him muttered, "I can't..."
