Chapter 1

Margaret Henderson, better known as Maggie, felt her back ache.  She was leaning over the sink, washing dishes.  Too many dishes, and her back was aching in protest.

She dried her hands, pushing her hair back from her face.

She wasn’t feeling well.  “Maybe I’m just overwhelmed,” she thought.  She had lost her job two months earlier, her boyfriend Kevin had left her, and she had three kids.  “What am I going to do?”

As she felt her eyes burning with tears, she turned on the radio, trying to distract herself.  She eased onto a chair, singing softly with the radio.

Her body ached.  “Am I getting sick?” she thought.  Her chest felt heavy, and she felt herself sweating.

Suddenly, she became aware of a huge burst of white light outside the window, light so bright it seemed to come through the walls of her house.  “What the…”

Trying to make sense of that, she noticed that the radio was now white noise, all static.  Confused, she started reaching towards the radio, when she heard a powerful voice coming from it.  “Margaret Henderson,” the voice stated.

She gasped.  How was that possible?

Weak with fear, she sat back down on the chair and then realized that she was lying on the kitchen floor.  How did she get there?  What was happening?

She felt herself floating and saw that she was in a park, at the edge of a forest, surrounded by glowing lights.  Somehow, she was no longer scared and no longer feeling sick.  In fact, she felt better than she had in a long time.

“Maggie,” she heard a soft voice say.  Turning towards the voice, she realized it came from a glowing blue butterfly, but it did not surprise her.

“You are in transition now,” continued the butterfly, its light glowing brighter.  “You can move on or go back.”

“It’s so beautiful and peaceful here,” she said.  “But my kids need me.  I can’t leave them.”  She felt a tugging at her heart.

“It is not yet your time.  I will watch over you and we will meet again.”  The words washed over her with a deep sense of love and compassion, deeper than she had ever felt before.

And then she became aware of the hard kitchen floor underneath her, and she sat up.  Had she been dreaming?

She heard the radio filled with static, and as she turned towards it, a song came back on, one she remembered from The Carpenters.  “There is wonder in most everything I see…”

As she stood up, she heard the front door open.  Walking towards it, she saw a familiar figure coming in.  “Maggie,” he whispered to her.  Where had she heard that voice before?  It was recent – the butterfly from her dream?  Was that possible?

The man looked towards her.  “Kevin!” she cried out.

“I’m here,” he answered.  “It is not yet your time.  I love you.  I will watch over you.”  Sobbing, she fell into his arms.
