What are good GRE scores for American Universities?

Almost all the top graduate schools in America require GRE score to grant admission to the students. Once students are done with their graduation, they start worrying about their GRE score to get admission in a good graduate school. There is a constant confusion regarding the good GRE score to get into the top American universities. However, there is no specific score level which could be considered the perfect score to achieve.

A good score varies according to personal preferences and the field as well as university requirements. For instance, a person who is aiming for University of California would find its required score to be perfect as compared to the person aiming for Yale. For the latter, a higher GRE score which is appropriate for Yale would be a good GRE score whereas the University of California score would not be too great.

Similarly, different universities have different requirements of the GRE score. There is no specified good GRE score. Students must do their research while applying to any university to find the required GRE score so that they can do the preparations accordingly. If you are not aware of your target, you will not be able to perform according to it. Therefore, it is better to know the required score before starting the preparation.

There are different sections in the GRE test. Each section is marked separately and in the end, all the marks are added together to check the total score. Different sections in the GRE test include Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing. Following is the classification of scores according to top, good and average universities.

Top score

More than 163 marks in the verbal section, more than 165 in the quantitative section and 5.0 plus marks in the analytical writing section make up to more than 328 score in total.  This score will place you in the top scoring 10% people among all the test takers and you can easily get into top graduate schools in the USA including the Ivy League schools.

Good score

Any score between 158 and 162 in the verbal section, between 159 and 164 in the quantitative section and a 4.5 in the analytical writing section make the total score between 317 and 327. It is considered a good GRE score which is secured by 25% of the test takers. You can get into excellent US universities for your masers, and even in the Ivy League schools, if your academic profile is consistent and well maintained.

Modest score

50% of the test takers secure a modest score in which the score of verbal section is in between 152 and 157, quantitative section in between 153 and 158 and a 4.0 score in the analytical writing section. The total score would be in between 305 and 316. If you get a modes t score, you can get admission into pretty good universities; not the ivy leagues though. However, it is still not completely bad and with a good essay writing website and consistent profile you can get into competitive programs as well.

Average score

Average score is not a too good score and none of the top or even renowned universities accept the average scorers. Anything below 300 is an average score and it is hard to get admission into the good conventional programs with that score. You can get into unconventional programs to create your own niche or you can give a retest to increase your GRE score.

Different universities require different GRE scores and it depends on your specific field as well. You must do a university based research to know the required score of your aimed university.
