Chapter 1

Purchase Travel Insurance

It's difficult to imagine anything bad happening for you, when you're young, healthy, and on top of the world.  Travel has a way of destroying assumptions, and you'll want to be prepared, if the worst does happen.  Make sure you have travel insurance, so you won't be stuck with a massive bill if you return with food poisoning or split your leg surfing before you depart.  Make sure that you insure your possessions against theft.

Be Careful About What You Put Online

Part of the pleasure of traveling is bragging about your journey on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.  Think about what information you post publicly, especially if it gives away your precise location or the fact that you are alone.  There have been instances in the past few individuals robbing homes when they knew the owners were off (thanks to social media) or harassing women traveling alone.  Share your photographs, but keep your personal info private.

Protect Your Data

Many folks don't consider the danger that travel puts your Internet data, but although in your physical possessions.  Public Wi-Fi networks are susceptible to computer keyboard skimmers and hackers who can steal your private passwords and banking data readily.  If possible, avoid visiting with sites while on public websites, and in the event that you have to, use a VPN to keep your information encrypted.

See Your Telephone

One of the most common and readily preventable crimes across the planet is phone snatching.  Many people have their telephones in their hands and take off and it is ridiculously easy for an athletic burglar to grab your phone from your clasp.  This is particularly an issue in large cities and on public transportation (in which the grab and dash is sometimes whimsically called"apple-picking").

Stay Alert in Social Situations

Meeting people and enjoying good nightlife is a highlight of many trips, but is also a time when you're vulnerable to bad people with bad intentions. Rely on good equipment to keep your house safe, like luna smoke detectors.  Drunk tourists are an easy target for thieves or worse.  All social scenarios shouldn't be approached by you but it is important to be aware and careful.
