Chapter 1

I kept hoping she would phone me back, but deep inside I knew that she wasn't going to. She's been missing for days now. I sent Laurent and Andy to search the perimeter, I thought they'd make a great team; Laurent's good with a gun and Andy is a genius! Yet, they haven't returned either. They're all probably wandering around, tearing limbs from the innocent and ruthlessly devouring their flesh. That's all they do. Destroying the human population one by one. I've let everyone down once again. Just like when Cobey died. It wasn't supposed to happen. It's been three weeks since his death and yet his face still haunts me. His last words forever imprinted in my mind. My guilt still remains, reminding me of him every second of the long, cold days. It was all my fault... and I couldn't forget that.

**3 WEEKS EARLIER** "They won't pick up!" Cobey shouted from a phone booth. It's been three hours since we've seen anyone. What's going on? Where is everybody? Cars are sprawled throughout the empty streets and we see no signs of any living beings. I consider that this horrific ordeal could possibly be the legendary myth known as "zombies". I laugh to myself and quickly dismiss this thought, as I hear his piercing scream of frantic fear from behind. I turn abruptly... only to see my worst nightmare coming true. I instantly know what they are. So many books, games and films about them. Who would ever think that it could eventually happen? I watch as the demonic minions of satan surround the phone box. I hear him faintly shout "Kalel! RUN!" But I cant. He's been my best friend for as long as I can remember. I refuse to leave him, but I am encompassed about with terrors that I dare not think of, I am in fear - in awful fear. I force myself to move and begin to slowly creep my way over to where Cobey is stranded; I'm too late. Each of them trail away slowly and after they are a safe distance away, I run to Cobey's almost lifeless body, he barely even looks like himself. As I kneel by his side, he coughs and splutters as his body lays partially dragged out of the phone booth. He chokes out his final words: "Who is it?" I don't even have time to respond as his arm drops to the ground. He's gone.

Even now, after three weeks, I see his body. Lifeless. Empty. Dead. I hear his last words again and again. 'Who is it?' He didn't even know that I'd gone back to help him. He thought that I ran away, and left him to die. My heart shatters into a thousand pieces as I relive the memory over and over. Constantly playing in my mind; it's all I see. I feel so lost without him but the others say that I shouldn't blame myself, but it doesn't seem to matter, and it doesn't seem right. I'm not prepared to let another member of our group die alone. They keep telling me to give up, she's dead, they say. She isn't, I know it, and I am going to find her, I just need to keep the faith. As I slump onto the torn blankets, my head hits the pillow and I instantly fall asleep.

Chapter 2

I awake, once again to the sound of constant groans. The inhumane creatures are getting closer day by day, they'd soon be invading our home in search of fresh blood. I realise that today I have to find Elizabeth. If I want something done, I have to do it myself. I sit around with my head hanging down and I wonder where Elizabeth could've possibly gone. She's been out alone before looking for new shelter and more supplies for the group and she's always returned unharmed. I just never thought about what to do if she didn't return, but now I have no choice. We have to go looking for her. Paris, Thomas, and I. Cathy insists on staying to watch our food supply. One cannot imagine the diabolical beings that dwell within the shadows. Darkness surrounds us. We all know that the first place Elizabeth would go after getting lost would be the nearest source of water, which is the River Jordan. We decided to set out at dark because by the time we get there, it'll be morning again.

Daylight begins to slither through the cracks between the leaves of the many trees standing tall and proud. We hear the refreshing sound of the flowing water and realise that we are finally here. My pace quickens and Thomas and Paris trail behind. We notice a figure wandering slowly across the other side of the river. I steadily aim my gun at it's head and gently rest my finger on the trigger. The figure turns and shrieks in terror. I recognise her immediately. "Elizabeth!" I hiss at her quietly, "what was that for?! Hordes of them are going to start showing up any minute now!" I frantically look around us, checking for signs of them.  "You were pointing a gun at my head!" She loudly exclaims. "I thought you were one of them! Now keep your voice down and quickly get back to this side of the river!" "I can't!" She complains, "the stones I used to jump across washed down the river not long before you got here and I can't swim!" "Oh no..." I hear Thomas utter to himself. I turn and notice one of them slowly making it's way towards us. I point my gun and instantly pull the trigger. It falls to the ground in a matter of seconds and dies from a single bullet to the head. I hear a cry for help and turn to see Paris across the river dripping with water.  "Thank god! Now bring Elizabeth back to this side so we can go home!" I gasp as Paris places her gun to Elizabeth's head. I begin to approach the river but Paris sees it as a threat and Elizabeth's body falls helplessly to the ground. "HOW COULD YOU KILL HER?!" I shout, surprisingly much louder than intended. Before Paris has a chance to explain herself, she also falls instantly to the ground, next to Elizabeth. I turn in shock to find Thomas shakily pointing his gun. "I couldn't let her get away with something like that...I...I'm sorry". Just then we hear a loud explosion nearby. It sounded like it came from directly ahead, across the river. I decide to let the matter go unnoticed as Thomas was merely avenging Elizabeth's horrific death. I only wish we could've been here soon enough to prevent this all. Maybe we could've saved her. I push aside my thoughts, point North and gesture for Thomas to follow me.
