Chapter 1

A howl echoed through the night bouncing off the concert walls of suburbia.  It was followed by a chorus of barks and yaps from the pets and lap warmers of the neighborhood. The howl did not belong to their kin. It was the call of something wild, something more dangerous then any thing they have ever encountered in the city.

A large brindled colored canine paced back and fourth on the porch of a brick house. It was larger then any dog Darren had ever seen and it had something almost intelligent in its amber eyes. The beast paused to stare Darren down as he moved closer to the house. It was as if the mutt knew exactly what was going on. It's fur was speckled with blood, and there was something black dripping down its snout.  It's fangs were bared. The canine shook its head every once in a while as if the bright lights and sounds behind Darren was putting him on edge. Darren had his hand on the gun, but he didn't pull the trigger. The canine and the cop seemed to be at a stand still.

" You ever see a dog like this before?" Darren asked as he heard Kevin walk up behind him.

" Maybe its a drug dog...You going to shoot him?" Kevin asked.

" It might know something." Darren replied.

Kevin looked at his partner as if he had lost his mind.  " So...Your going to interrogate  it?"

Darren turned half way to look at Kevin. He knew better then to keep his eyes off the mutt altogether.  He had a feeling he would rather attack then give up whatever secrets where hiding in that house.  " Call Jenna".

" Really?" Kevin asked. " Do we have time for that?"

Darren shrugged. " Whoever is dead in there...is dead in there. I want the dog brought somewhere safe until we can asses the situation. " Darren told Kevin turning his attention back toward the mutt.

" Are you sure you don't just want an excuse to see Jenna?" Kevin joked as he walked off back toward his cruiser to make the phone call.
