"Hey cutie. Are you free?"

He calls me at work. Even though I told him not to. I clutch my phone to my ear, my shoulders shaking.

"No, I'm busy right now."

"Work?"

"Yes. I thought I told you." I grit my teeth. The words escape through small spaces.

Annoyance shows in my voice. My pen taps upon the desk.

"Sorry, I just miss you so much it hurts."

Tap, tap, tap, tap.

I hesitate to say so. A pause before answering. "I miss you too."

My voice is clipped, rubbing sandpaper together. Or over my nerves, rather, making them raw and irritated.

"But you don't sound like it."

Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.

"Jeffery, I'm in the middle of work right now. I'm sorry if I sound annoyed."

"Oh, okay…"

Tap, tap, tap…

"Love you."

A box of silence. "… Love you too."

"Bye."

A square of relief. "Bye."

"Miss Miya, could you file this for me?"

A hand extends from the neighboring cubicle. My computer buzzes to life.

"Stop turning off, you stupid good for nothing piece of junk."

I snatch the flapping page. Maybe a little bit too violently. A head follows the paper.

"Miss Miya, is everything okay?"

"Yes." I fume.

I push the swivel chair back and stalk off to the filing room.

I shut the door with a sigh. Darkness encircles me. I switch the light on. Light pools overhead, throwing the tall cabinets into tall shadows.

Gosh. That stupid…

I take a glance at the paper. A blood pressure measurement chart.

I bet mine's through the roof.

Deftly, I extract the folder of the patient, file it under the " Information" tab, and shove it back into the shelf.

And leave the room, wordlessly turning off the light. The looming shadows plunge into sudden darkness.
