all the words i'll never say

introduction

i learned from an early age that my voice and words
cause destruction
i learned how to hide within my own body
and stay so quiet i could almost disappear until i
forgot what warmth felt like, how to ask for help,
to wake up and feel peace in the morning

so these are all the words i will never say
here, for you,
so thank you for giving me a voice
thank you for helping me pick up the pieces
just by being here with me
wherever you are, thank you

    - a little thank you note for you

little crimes

these little crimes i
commit every day, in the same way i
commit your smile to memory
i commit the way your hands
build cities in front of my eyes
and build temples with your mind
in the same way you make
entire worlds with your lips

my crime is being just as entranced
in your lips as the galaxies you make
with them
and wondering if your hands that have built
temples and nations would
fit perfectly in mine
i think about your smile
and the way it feels as if the sun could burst out of you
any second when you do

and i guess that’s my crime,
falling for you, when i know you are everything,
the trees, the stars, the sun,
they all remind me of
you, you, you,

voices

this voice is all i have
if i stay quiet then it may as well be a
moment of silence for the death of my freedom,
death of my narratives, my story,
if i say that i am surviving through poetry then
who am i to keep my mouth shut
to make others more comfortable
