Ruffle My Feathers

by Asta Idonea

Barrett snapped out of his stupor and leaned against his own Ute. His heart was still pounding. For one dreadful moment, he’d thought… But it was fine. Everything was fine. Paul didn’t know. No one knew. He was safe.

He opened the driver’s door and got in, chucking his soiled T-shirt onto the passenger seat before starting the engine. The journey home was uneventful, and once indoors he headed straight for the shower, keen to wash away the grime and dirt. He loved his job, but between brick dust and cement, he was always thankful to get home and clean up at the end of the day. And on Friday nights the water washed away more than just sweat. It cleansed him of his weekday persona of Barrett the Builder, leaving him free to be someone else during the weekend.

Barrett dried off and wandered into the bedroom. A glance at the clock revealed he still had plenty of time, so he put on the radio and swayed to the music as he selected something to wear. It wasn’t all that important, seeing as he’d change when he reached his destination, but it helped him to relax and get in the mood.

The drive to the other side of town took thirty-five minutes. Barrett parked a couple of blocks from his destination and walked the rest of the way. It was a pleasant summer’s night, a soft breeze keeping the worst of the residual heat at bay, and he paused for a few seconds to enjoy it before knocking on the side door and stealing inside.
