Everybody can write, but not everyone can be a writer. If you choose to read the ambiguity in this statement or not, well and good. We know that you hold all prerogative. However, the statement conveys a frequent assertion in most writing circles. Chapter 1

It Needs a Lot of Discipline

If you happen to know any writer on a personal level, then you'd agree with this statement. Successful writers are one of the most disciplined people that you can meet. You might walk in on them writing in the morning, and you'd find them still pressing hard on their keyboards in the evening. While you wake up for a midnight snack, you might find them still glaring at the face of their screens trying to format some paragraphs, or you might see their study room is light still on signifying that they are still at work.

Writing consistently requires a lot of discipline. We all love sleeping, but in the mind of a writer, the following words linger, "How is this sleep going to help towards finish my book?" It follows then that writing is not for the faint-hearted. Once you start, you will have to push hard against some limits.

In essence, being a writer requires a lot of self-discipline and a fair share of sacrifices. There are no two ways about it. You inevitably have to be strict and stick to a schedule. Some aspects of your life will have to conform to your program. For example, social lives family life, etc. Unfortunately, some simple pleasures such as taking long naps would have to pay the ultimate price. It is no wonder that when some weakling writers take a sabbatical, they never come back. Therefore, if you are contemplating joining the writing circle, cultivate self-discipline as a first measure. This is what will keep you going.

The Dreaded Writer’s Block

Arguably, one of the dreaded fears of any writer is drawing blanks at the face of a task. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if you fear drawing blanks; you will always run out of ideas at one point in your writing life. Many writers can relate. Have you ever wondered why some accomplished writer who knows his/her stuff, never finished writing some book or novel that was due for publishing? Well, we hope you can read in between the lines now. Most probably, the writer suffered from the dreaded writer's block.

If you suffer from this block, all hope is not lost. Take a break and reconfigure your approaches to the project. Acknowledge that you have fallen victim as this will stimulate you to go back to the drawing board. It may also be a sign from the universe for you to try something else in your life like having a social life once more. All the same, in all cases, try as much to avoid burnout.

Increasing Competition

As the world moves to embrace consumer sovereignty and product diversification, competition has increased the world over in every sector for business and professionals to stay relevant. Even writers face competition. Out of the millions of books that have been published and the millions of articles that have been posted online, how is an individual writer to match up to this?

Many hold the perception that all it takes is to write and edit a book and the rest will fall into place. However, there are a whole lot of aspects involved in order to keep up with the competition, such as marketing, prospecting, pitching, etc. Your supposed end is a new beginning to something else, and the cycle continues.

You are Liked and Disliked in Equal Measure

All writers can attest that at some point in their writing life, they got an excellent appraisal of their work. In the same light, they also can't fail to deny that they have received high-level criticisms, negative reviews, and harsh words about their work and ability as writers. The premise is you are not to be everyone’s cup of tea. Some clueless individuals might even call you out or try school you on how to write a good philosophy paper, yet you are the professional.

Since it is inevitable that you will receive the above criticisms, always remember that you cannot please everyone. That’s the reality. Don’t let it get to you when it happens. It doesn’t make you less of a writer. It is just an indicator that you need to look for those who like your writing.

People Hold You in Low Regard

The beauty of writing is that it can be performed anywhere and at any time. There is a high chance that this article was written in the comfort of a lousy arranged bedroom with the writer still clad in their pajamas. Some writers write on rooftops, parks, while the conservative ones may go to a library. To say the least, there are no formalities when it comes to where one can write. You have the free and easy life to do what you love where you are comfortable.

Surprisingly, this might be the point at which people stop holding you in high regard. Perhaps, they might have been taught that one must be in the confines of an executive office to carry out some meaningful work. If you carry out your trade in your bedroom or house, then, by all means, you are not doing anything substantial in your life. You will be the go-to person for all errands and menial tasks because you have no job and direction in life. In case your neighbor needs someone a babysitter, they can come to you, right? You might also be the person that they'll resort to, who can drive the hockey team to the semi-finals, because you stay in the house all day, right?

Conclusion

If you are going to be a writer, then you must accept that you will face the highlighted hurdles. This is how you will understand that it’s your type of thing. Most writers hold that they will not make their fortune in the industry. But surprisingly, they end up doing it. No one said it was going to be easy. Your resilience is what will count through it all. The fruits are inevitably going to be sweet when your book is a bestseller, and your blog is attracting much traffic. This is when, like a true champion, you will stand tall with a raised hand and clenched fist, shouting in reference to the writing trade, Viva!
