The Room

My husband and I had very much in common, we both loved traveling. There wasn't a single weekend where we wouldn't travel. Sometimes he would work late at night during the weekdays, not even coming home for a whole week. And when he did, he would just sigh and tell me and my two daughters that we just can't go traveling during the weekend.

And so my daughters, Hannah and Alexa, would just clean the house and go to Church during the weekend. In our little home in Texas, there wasn't much we could do, since the temperature was very hot over there. We had air conditioners all over the house.

Bella, our chocolate-colored German Shepherd, would lay down on the kitchen floor and refresh herself, while the air conditioner was blowing on her.

One Monday morning in mid-July, my daughters and I went to my husband's workplace, just to check up on him. Bella wanted to go badly, but she couldn't because my husband, Tom, was a construction worker. I begged him to stay home that day, since the temperature reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit that day. But he went anyway.

The girls were excited to see him, especially since they never visited the place before, because Tom worked night shifts. This was an exciting experience for them.

Hannah was twelve, and Alexa was fifteen. I just couldn't believe they were growing up so fast.

They greeted their father as we stepped on the dirty ground. "Girls, I told you not to wear those shoes, they're brand new," I sighed.

"Mom, we'll take good care of them, right Alexa?" Hannah asked. "Yeah. We promise mom." Alexa chuckled. "You better," I shook my head.

"Tom, why didn't you stay home today? It's so hot out here!" I said, but Tom didn't answer me. All of a sudden he fell to ground, and lay there, stiff as a mannequin.

"Tom?" I asked. "Are you okay?" I was freaking out. "TOM! Answer me, please!" I was turning pale. "GIRLS! SOMEONE CALL 911!"

Hannah, Alexa and I were walking in circles in the hospital waiting room. I just couldn't believe that this was reality. "Mom, is Dad going to be okay?" Alexa asked me, with great fear. I have never seen such a side from Alexa before.

"Yes, let's just hope for the best." I said. A tear rolled down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away with my hand.

"Mom, it's okay," Hannah began, "you can cry. It's better than bottling everything up inside of you." I was surprised. "Thank you, dear." I looked up.

The ceiling had a window, showing the sun from outside. "God," I began. "if you are real, please heal my husband, I beg you." I cried. God was my only hope.

"Mrs. Diaz?" The Doctor called. "Y-yes that's me." I sighed. "May I speak with you for a moment?" He looked at Hannah and Alexa. "Um, without your children?"

"Yes, um, stay here girls. I'll be right back." I sniffed. The doctor and I walked down the hallway, and he lead me into a room.

"So we have discovered that," the doctor sighed, "that your husband had a stroke and a heartattack at the same time," I gasped.

"Is my Tom alright?" I frantically asked. "I'm sorry but, he passed away..." The doctor said. "No, this can't be true. This isn't happening!" I screamed. "I'm so ever sorry, Mrs. Diaz, but we have tried everything."

And that's when I stopped believing in God. My two daughters, our dog and I moved to New Jersey, I just couldn't bear to live in that area anymore. We moved to a smaller house. Now, I had to work at two jobs, just to earn enough money for my two daughters, our dog, and our house.

My daughters helped me out with anything they could do, but I told them that I was fine. Every weekend we would clean, but we stopped going to Church, well, for me at least.

"Mom? Why don't you go to Church anymore? Don't you love and believe in God?" Hannah asked me one Saturday evening in August. "You do know that God will love you, forever and ever, right?"

"Yes, I do know that, but..."

"But what?"

"But..."

"Mom! Do you know where my phone cases are? I would like to change my case!" Alexa yelled from downstairs.

"I'll get them for you!" I yelled.

I went down the tiny hall, and as I walked, I looked at my wedding ring. Oh, how much I missed Tom.

Alexa's phone cases were all the way down the hall, the last room. When I stepped in the room, it was like the whole world stopped. The room had a calming presence, a presence that I have never experienced before.

And if you listened closely, so carefully, you could hear someone, gently calling my name.

"MOM! Where are you?!" I was so caught up in the moment, that I forgot that I had to bring down Alexa's phone cases. I decided that I'll come back up here later tonight when the girls are asleep.

The girls are asleep now, so now I could finally investigate the room. As I stepped in, the air was warm, and had a calming presence. I looked up at the ceiling, and saw that there was a yellow light. But that wasn't possible, since the light wasn't on.

All of a sudden, someone touched my shoulder. And in the darkest corner, there was a butterfly. It slowly flew towards me, and sat at the edge of my hand.

And if you listen, very VERY closely, you could hear, the words of Jesus.
