How we met

1// New Neighbors

It was sunny with the scattered clouds that every so often covered the sun. I was outside with my brother Caspar drawing on the side walk with chalk when a large moving truck pulled up.

"Look Quinn! Someone's moving into the Parker's house!" Caspar said with excitement. Being friendly and waiting till the whole family got out of the car Caspar then ran over to them.

"Hi I'm Caspar, I live next door. Are y'all moving in?" He asked.

"Hello Caspar it's nice to meet you, I'm Mrs. Collins and this my husband." The woman replied with a sweet smile. I quickly ran up to Caspar and apologized for his actions.

"I'm so sorry, Caspar is always in other people’s business, nice to meet you I'm Quinn." I held my hand out and Mrs. Collins gladly shook it. I looked around and saw she had three kids, two girls one boy.

"Nice to meet you Quinn, I assume you go to the high school down the street?"

"I'm afraid I don't, Caspar and I go to the charter school on Cedar Point, and it’s only a few blocks away. It's almost like public school but we have more freedom. Caspar goes to the elementary and I'm obviously in high school." Mrs. Collins nodded thinking about what I had just told her.

"Maybe I'll consider enrolling my kids there."

"That'd be cool! Well it was nice meeting you but I've got to go make lunch for Caspar," who had by now ran around the house a couple of times and was now back on the driveway drawing, "Have a good day. If you need anything you can stop by anytime." I stated as I walked away.

"Caspar go inside and tell Mom we have new neighbors, maybe ask her to cook some brownies for a 'Welcome to the neighborhood' gift." I asked as I knelt down to pick up the chalk.

"I'm only nine and I'm already your slave?" He mumbled as he made his was in the garage and into the house. I laughed at his remark and kept picking up the various colors he had scattered around the drive way.

I looked up and noticed the boy I had only taken a glance at sitting in the drive way looking around. He looked around my age, which I knew since he had already gone through puberty, which you could tell from the large Adams Apple gaging fromhis neck. He haddark hair and an amazing defined jaw line, which made him even hotter. His lips were plump and dimples appeared at the slightest of a smile. HisHawaiiancolored tan was the perfect shade for any color to look good on him, and he had obvious muscles on his arms and legs. In other words, he was perfect.

I've never had a crush on anyone and the feeling I got when I looked at him was no feeling I had ever felt before. It was weird and extremely unusual for me, I guess I was starring too long because his dreamy eyes caught onto mine and his face was filled with confused and odd expressions.

Blushing I picked up the last piece of chalk and smiled as I walked to the garage to put the container up. After a few miserable tries to put the chalk on the top shelf I was ready to give up. I sighed and thought about how easy it was to get the chalk down than it was to put it back up. Suddenly I heard foot steps behind me and I turned around to see who it was. "Having trouble?" A deep voice spoke. "Yeah," I paused, "do you think you could help me put this up there?" I asked as sweetly as possible.

"Sure." He grabbed the box from me and our hands slightly touched transferring lighting through my hands. Literally.

"Ow!" I yelped and jumped back. "You shocked me!" I shook my hand around shaking the pain away.

“If anybody shocked someone it was you shocking me.” He spit back.

“Whatever,” I mumbled. “Can you just put the chalk upthere?” He nodded and easily placed it on the top shelf.

“Why do you keep it so high up? Maybe you should put it on a shelf that easier to reach.”

“We would but Caspar has a habit of grabbing them and trashing our drive way with a mess of colors.” I sighed. “Well thank you- um I don’t think I ever got your name.”

“Lane, Lane Collins.”

“Well than, thank you Lane, I’ll um see you around.” I waved goodbye and walked into the house.

“Mom!” I yelled not knowing where she was in the house.

“I’m in the kitchen Quinn.” I walked over there to findmy mother stirring a mix of brownies and her boyfriend sitting at the bar with a glass of red wine in his hands.

“Thomas.” I spat out with a tone. Thomas was my mom’s most recent boyfriend, who I absolutely hated. He has no manners, and only cares about himself. For example, the other night he was going to take us out to dinner, but when he opened the front door andhedidn’t hold it so I said “Could have held the door” under my breathe, and I guess he heard because he forced me pay the bill with my debit card, and as we were eating his napkin was still obviously on the table and eventually he began eating with his hands.

“Hello, Quinn, I see you still have an attitude with me.”

“I’ll always have an attitude with you, now why don’t you leave while I talk to my mother in private.” I say motioning him out.

“Anything you can say around your mother you can say around me.”

“Yeah I don't think so.” I walked over to the bar, snatched his wine glass out of his hands and slowly poured it in the sink staring at him the entire time as the wine washing down the drain. With an accomplished smirk on my face I point out the back door.

“You really don’t like him do you Quinn?” My mom asks once he’s out of my sight.

“Obviously not, maybe you should break up with him, I mean it’s not like I suggest it every day.” I say with a strong hint of sarcasm. I don’t understand why she won’t break up with him even though she knows how much Caspar and I hate him. The only time she’s gotten mad at him was when he slapped me for telling him off about how he drinks too much and that if he wanted to get drunk he could go to the bar because he wasn’t welcomed here to drink our alcohol stock. After he slapped me, mom yelled at him and called the police because he wouldn’t leave until he was “finished with thatlittle brat”, also known as me. Other than that I don’t see why she keeps him around.

“Well, since neither of you like him, I will break up with him.” She said selflessly.

“Seriously Mom?” I practically shouted. She nodded.I quickly ran up to her and gave her the biggest bear hug possible.

"I'd pick you over Thomas any day baby." She said into my shoulder. Smiling I released and kissed her on the cheek.

"Are those brownies for the Collins'?" I say looking over her shoulder into the gooey batter.

"Yes darling they are. Would you care to join me when I take them over? I'm going to invite them to dinner if that's alright."

"Sure I'd love to come, and fine with me." I said casually as I walked away, but on the inside my mind was have a party. Lane was coming over! I should wear a dress, but not too fancy, maybe a sun dress? Defiantly. I waltzed up the stairs to my room and sat on my bed unable to think of what to do first. Then I suddenly got an idea, I stripped down and changed into my bathing suit.

Now I'm not bragging, but my mom is a lawyer and people from across the world call her just to work their cases. If you've seen Clueless, the movie, than you might know how her Dad makes five hundred dollars and hour, well depending on the case she's working she could get paid up to three hundred and fifty to five hundred and fifty. So with that settled I guess you could say we're, upper class.

I opened both doors to my balcony and breathed in the sweet, fresh air. I already had two body length lawn chairs out there so I quickly picked one and set a cushion down. I snatched the tanning oil from the table and smothered my body in it and then whipped my sun glasses on. I got comfortable and started listening to my "August" playlist that had all the latest songs, and drifted off into a light sleep, which is when you’re awake but you’re asleep.

2// Dinner with the Collins

“Quinn honey are you almost ready? Martha is almost done cooking.” My mom screamed from the bottom of the stair case with a nervous tone. She always wanted to make a great first impression a constantly stressed about her impression on others. I shook my head at her effort to impress the Collins and put my hair up in a messy bun. I was wearing my “DON’T touch my pizza” grey crop top, my dark blue skinny jeans, and a black sandals with a matching bracelet. I guess you could say I didn’t dress up much for the occasion but I didn’t really care.

“Quinn!” My mother shouted once more before I swung my door open and walked down the hall to the stair case. I walked down carelessly and then made my way into the kitchen to see Martha finishing up the finishing touches of the icing for the cake.

“Hey Martha,” I said as I scooped up a finger of mashed potatoes. “Need any help?” Martha was almost like a nanny, or another mother to me. She worked her butt off making us food, cleaning, and doing almost anything we really needed. We didn’t treat her with disrespect, and always praised her. I think my mother loved Martha more than she did her own family. Seeing as at our last family reunion she almost ripped her hair out, but was still caring and sweet to Martha as she passed out food. She is always here for us and treats as if we’re her family.

“Oh Quinn, I’ve got everything under control but thank you for the offer.” She said over her shoulder as she carefully placed the cake on a raised platter, “Actually do you mind helping me put the appetizers on the table?”

“Gladly, did Caspar set the table?”

“Yes, I was too busy cooking so your mother asked him to do it.”

I nodded and then grabbed three baskets of bread and spread them evenly on the dining table. I went back for the fruit and vegetable plates and let Martha do the rest.

As soon as I got comfortable on the couch I heard my phone ringing from upstairs, determined to get it I ran as fast as possible to my room only to miss the call. I unlocked my phone and sat on my bed to see who called me.

Unknown Caller: (390) 2109 3412 read the number. Confused, I left it alone and then grabbed my computer to stroll through twitter. Nothing new was happening so I grabbed a book off my shelf and read in my peacock chair.

Five chapters later a knocking at my door detached my eye from the crisp pages. I got up and began to turn the knob I hear a numerous number of annoyed knocks.

“Yes?” I quickly snapped to stop the knocking. I looked at the tall muscular figure and recognized him as Lane, my new neighbor. Crap, I totally forgot about dinner.

“Hey princess, in case you forgot we’re eating dinner downstairs, and I’m hungry so hurry it up.” He with no hesitation.

“Excuse me for wasting your time your highness.” I spat out with a cocky grin on my face as I curtsied before him. I rolled my eyes and pushed my way past him. The second I set foot into the dining room I put a fake smile on and apologized for making them wait. I took my seat and introduced myself once more to our guests. Moments later the royal highness sat down across from me with a satisfied smirk on his face. Ignoring his amused glare I served myself and joined the conversation at the table.

Caspar was talking to the little girl who looked about his age and her sister just sat quietly next to me listening to everyone’s chit chat. She turned to me and smiled.

“I’m Ellen, I take it your Quinn right?” She whispered.

“Nice to meet you Ellen, and yeah I’m Quinn. Would you mind me asking how old are you?” I asked, instantly making the conversation weird. I laughed at myself for the way I worded that question and then put my attention back to Ellen.

“Sixteen” She simply answered with another simple smile.

“So you’re going to be a junior this year?”

“Yeah, school starts next week right?”

“Sadly, yes. At least you’ll have some time to settle in before the first day.”

She nodded and returned to her food, cleaning her plate as she ate the last Brussel sprout on her plate.

After dinner my mom and the Collins went outside to the patio and to drink and talk.

“Quinn darling would you mind showing the kids up to the movie room or maybe the game room?” My mom asked as she stuck her head out from the sliding door with a glass of wine on her hand. I just nodded and gestured everyone to follow me.

Once we made up the stairs Caspar and Carly went straight for his room, leaving Ellen, Lane and I alone.

“Well then, what do you guys want to do?” I hesitantly asked. Ellen shrugged and looked at Lane whose eyes were glue to his phone. Ellen rolled her eye and then snatched the phone out of his hands.

“El! Give me my phone back brat!” Lane snapped the second the phone was slipped out of his grasp. Ellen gave him a stern look and then eagerly said, “No phone until we get home or else I’ll tell mom you didn’t quit smoking.”

Blackmail? I like this girl. I snickered only to earn a glare from Lane.

“That’s right, I found your stash in your boxes, two missing. I checked on the patio and found the butts. Clean up your act or Mom’s going to send you back to military school.” Ellen threated. Military school? Smoking? Yikes. Just by the control Ellen had over Lane showed she was the alpha sibling, smart, uses her knowledge wisely and is always a step ahead. I wish Caspar listened to me, but I guess I wasn’t as smart with my alpha sibling abilities as her.

Lane bit his lip in defeat and then surrendered.

“How about we go to Quinn’s room to play truth or dare?” Lane suggested. Confused and shocked I looked at him.

“Great idea! One problem, there’s only three of us though.” Ellen pointed out. Too tired to argue and held up my hand slightly. “I could invite my friends over, Chelsie has a brother, and I could invite Marc over?” I suggested. Lane shrugged and Ellen nodded. “Okay let me call em’, here y’all can wait in my room.” I said as I directed them into my lit up room. I closed the door behind them and then dialed Chelsie’s number.

Ring, ring, ring

On the fourth ring she final picked up.

“Hey Quinn, what’s up?”

“My new neighbors are over for dinner and we were going to play truth or dare. Maybe you and Jason could come join us?” I asked as sweetly as possible. There was a pause, and then I heard yelling in the back “Jason get your shoes on we’re leaving.”

“We’ll be right over!” Chelsie answered and then I quickly hung up. I scroll through my many useless contacts until I find Marc’s name. I clicked the call button and waited impatiently

Ring, ring.

Only took two rings this time until a deep perky voice answered.

“Quinn! Perfect timing, I’m bored amuse me.” Marc said. I laughed and then invited him to come over. He gladly accepted and then we said our goodbyes. I walked back to my room to see Lane braiding Ellen’s hair.

“What in the world are you doing?” I asked trying to hold back a laugh. Lane stopped in the middle of her braid and let go of the lose piece and scratched the back of his neck looking around trying to play it off smoothly. I giggled and then heard the doorbell.

“They’re here, y’all can stay up here or come with me…” I trailed off.

“It’s okay we’ll be fine up here.” Ellen replied as she moved back towards Lane to finish her braid. I laughed and then jogged downstairs. Opening the heavy glass door I let in my two best friends and Jason.

“I’ve got to warn you, Lane is quite attractive but don’t freak out, and he seems like a dick sometimes.” I warned as we headed up the stairs. As I opened my door I saw Ellen and Lane sitting on the floor with a bottle ready. They both looked up and Ellen smiled and Lane just looked each of the up and down.

“Lane and Ellen this is Chelsie, Jason her little brother, and Marc.” I awkwardly introduced the three to the new comers. Jason gave Lane a nod, Jason just smiled and Chelsie waved at each of them.

“Let’s get to it then shall we?” Ellen spoke up. I sat between Lane and Chelsie and spun the bottle which landed on Jason.

“Truth or dare Jay?” I asked with a small but noticeable smirk on my face.

He hesitated but then answered “Truth.”

“What kind of underwear are you wearing at the moment?” I simply asked. Blushing, Jason stood up and pulled the corner of his kakis at his hip down slightly showing us his bright pink boxers. We all nodded trying not to laugh and continued. As the game continued Marc had spun and it had landed on Lane. Lane instantly said dare before Marc had the chance to ask him the question.

Marc crossed the “safe” boundaries of our game and said, “I dare you to play seven minutes in heaven with,” He paused looking around, his eyes stopped at me. “With Quinn.”

I slowly got up and opened the closet. Ellen wrapped a bandana around my eyes and then pushed me into the closet with Lane. I stood there for a few seconds until Lane cleared his throat.

“Are you going to you know, start?” I whispered. He stepped closer to me. My back was already against the back wall and I could feel his warm breathe on my neck.

“You tell no one of what happens in here okay? I’m just playing along with the game.” Lane whispered directly into my ear. He brought his hand up to my cheek and slowly stroked it with his thumb that sent shivers down my back, but not in a bad way. He learned forward or so I thought and our lips lightly touched. I slightly turned my head and put my hands on his shoulders. He moved closer, if that was possible and our lips locked into place as if they were a key into a lock. I parted for a second to catch my breath and then snaked my arms around his neck. He quickly moved our lips back into place as his other hand moved to my hip, pulled me towards him so that our bodies fit together perfectly. He turned his head to the left grazing his lips on my neck softly sucking lightly until I squirmed. He chuckled and sucked on that same spot as my fingers roamed his head. He then moved back to my lips and deepened the kiss. The hand that was on my hip slid over to my under thigh picking it up as I wrapped it around his. My hands moved to his chest and I slightly pushed away.

“You just stole my first kiss.” I panted into his neck.

“I’m sorry love.” His deep wispy voice said before he plowed his lips back onto mine and picked up my other thigh, leading me to only being held up by his weight against my body and the wall behind me. My arms crossed around his neck clung to his hair as he found my soft spot on my neck once more. I began to heat more than before and I found my feet slowly finding the floor and his arms being placed back at my hips.

“We should do this again sometime love, it was nice. Seven minutes is almost over, catch your breath and pretend this never happened.” I nodded and then realized the bandana had fallen onto the floor as we were making out. I quickly pick it up and put it back on.

We heard a knock at the closet door and Lane opened it and emerged out of the dark first. When I came out I took off the bandana and noticed everyone was looking at us. I awkwardly sat down and checked my phone to see the time. 10:38 pm.

“I’m going to go check on Caspar and Carly. Y’all can keep playing.” I said. As I made my way to Caspar’s room I lightly touched the spot on my neck where Lane had been sucking. I ducked into the bathroom to make sure a hickey wasn’t anywhere near noticeable. Thankfully there wasn’t anything there and so I continued to Caspar’s room. When I walked in a saw them sitting on the floor looking at the constellations on that app on the iPad. I walked back out and heard the adults talking in the living room, my mom spotted me and told me that everyone needed to go home and that they Collins’ were leaving. I simply nodded and sadly crashed the party for everyone.

“Hey Ellen, Lane, your parents are leaving. Also Chelsie, Jason, and Marc you’ve got to go too.” I said with a sigh and a sad face. They all said their goodbyes as they left and all that left was Ellen, Lane and I.

“So… mind telling me what y’all did while you were in that closet?” Ellen tried convincing us. I simply just shrugged and shook it off. Lane on the other hand kept looking at me oddly and I wasn’t too sure if that was good or bad. I walked them downstairs and bid my goodbyes, then slowly made my way up the stairs, interrupted with a few yawns.

3// A trip in town

“Caspar!” I shouted from the top of the stairwell. I saw him peek his head around the corner from the guest room and then he ran. Extremely mad I ran down the stairs as quickly as possible following him into the kitchen where he stood behind mom as a shield.

“Caspar! Why in the world did you do that?” I growled trying to grab him from behind mom.

“What happened Quinn? Why are you chasing him around the house?” My mother asked pushing Caspar away from behind her and looking at both of us. Caspar just stood there.

“You know how dad’s been calling you asking to speak to Caspar but never wants to talk to me? He doesn’t want to talk to me because Caspar told dad that I hated him and couldn’t even stand to hear his voice!” I shouted with tears forming in my eyes. She looked at Caspar, turned him around and straight up spanked him. He yelped in pain as Mom grabbed his ear and pulled him upstairs.

“We’ll talk later Quinn, wipe up your tears and take a walk.” She told me before she slammed his door behind herself. I simply just nodded and found my rain coat. I put that on and slipped my feet into my rain boots. It was only lightly drizzling outside but there were plenty of puddles from the night before.

As my boots sloshed in the mud I heard loud roars of thunder and the rain went from a drizzle to an almost pour. Surprised by this sudden change I headed home. I had walked out of the neighborhood by now and was on Main Street which is in the middle of town. I was by the Macy’s coffee shop and decided to wait in there until the rain slowed down. As I turned the corner I slammed into a tall muscular figure.

“Oh my god I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going and,” I looked up and saw Lane with a coffee stain on his shirt. He was holding two of coffees that had spilled.

“Lane, I’m so sorry I’ll buy you more coffees and I can take your shirt to the dry cleaners.” I frantically said grabbing napkins dapping his shirt.

Today really wasn’t my day.

“I’m so sorry Lane I wasn’t looking where I was going and I’m having a really bad morning I’m so sorry.”

“Quinn you say sorry way too much.” He said taking the napkins in my hand away from me and throwing them away, “This shirt was uncomfortable anyways. May I ask why you in town alone on this gloomy day?”

I sighed and sat in a booth, Lane following me.

“Well my brother told my dad I hated him so that he could have him all for himself. My dad hasn’t called me since the divorce four months ago and I was checking the voicemail in my mom’s office and I heard him say how he wished I didn’t hate him, and I don’t hate him.” I paused to catch my breath. “So I told my mom and she told me to take a walk to chill down and then I bumped into you and spilled all your coffee and I feel like such an ass I’m so sorry.”

Lane just nodded at the short story of my morning.

“Let’s go home.” His voice boomed breaking the silence between us. He stood up and ushered me to get up. I stood up following him out the door. He grabbed his umbrella from the umbrella stand and opened it. I walked outside of the umbrella not wanting to invade his space. I heard a chuckle and then his hand snaked its way around my hip and he pulled me closer to him so that we were both safe under the rather large umbrella. Our hips slightly brushed at every step, and his thumb has made its way under my shirt rubbing small circles slowly making me blush profusely.

“You’re a very strange girl Quinn. Most girls would be throwing themselves at me but here you are just going with the flow. I’ve noticed that you start tapping your fingers on something when you’re not sure what to do, like last night in your closet before anything started you were tapping your fingers on your thighs. You’ve done that a few times this morning as well.” Lane spoke as he looked off into the distance. My attention turned to him when I realized what he had just said.

“You were looking at me? Like studying me?” I partly cough whispered.

“You’re kind of hard to not look at love.” He said looking at my directly in the eyes.

I blushed and turned my head trying to hide it, but Lane stopped walking and softly turned my head back towards him.

“You know what, forget what I said last night, last night in the closet definitely happened.” He leaned down connecting our lips, pulling me closer to him his hand cupped my cheek. I closed my eyes enjoying the touch of his lips on my mine.

We parted and I smiled at him. We continued walking with our hands intertwined the whole way. We made small talk until we reached the side walk in the middle of our houses. I cleared my throat and detached our hands smiling and walking towards my driveway.

“Quinn. You want to um,” He hesitated. “Do you want to come over?” I turned around, and nodded. He sighed in relief and reached his hand out to me.

When we walked into his house, I noticed how everything was already unpacked.

“Wow you guys unpacked quickly.” I said looking around. Lane nodded guiding me upstairs. We walked to the end of the hall to a room that I figured was his. He pulled me in and let me look around first.

“Wow you’re really organized.” I said as I looked around.
