Prologue

At some point, there had been a promise.

The world will grow to accept us.  He said.  The young lady had shaken her head.  No, it won't.  She had replied, simple regret flooding through her voice.

He approached her again the next day.  Be with me, Haleli and we can be happy forever.  Reluctantly she had said, No, I can't.  But Haleli felt that the words were thicker and harder to say this time.

Once again he touched her face gently, staring into her blue eyes.  Haleli.  Be with me.  We can learn to be together.  That's what you want, right.  It doesn't matter what they think.  She had tried to say no, but the words were stuck in her throat.  She let him kiss her gently on the lips.  She gazed into his eyes, filled with hope and longing.  Slowly she felt herself drifting endlessly, her mind caught.  He smiled at her.  His lips were bright, his eyes shining, his slick blond hair ruffled in the wind.  Her head was spinning, caught in the web of his endearing spark.  Her mouth spoke on it's own accord.  She couldn't stop herself as her mouth opened slowly.  I will.  He caught, her as she stumbled, and hugged her.  He didn't let go.

They had spent the next seven years together, unnoticed by people and living in a modest cottage. They were safe.  No one found out, at least not until the village blacksmith, Phero had noticed Haleli in her farm, collecting wheat.  WITCH!  He had cried, running back to find the others.  Haleli was stricken with fear.  She ran back to the cottage, terror flooding from her in waves.  She had ran to her husband.  We need to run!  If they find us, they'll kill us both!

The couple packed food and water and fled into the night, the village chasing them, close behind.

Haleli looked at her husband, fear in her eyes.  They're getting closer!  She had called to him.  Just keep going.  He had replied, bracing himself.  They had stopped to rest for the night.  The men were following their trail, covering more land on their horses.  By the morning they had caught up to the couple.  Haleli had awoken to yelling.

There they are!  The men yelled.  And the prince!  Traitor!  Haleli had looked at her prince nervously.  What do we do?  The man's eyes blazed.  Fight.  He had replied, no regret in his voice, only anger.

The men had charged.  Haleli shot curses and spells at the men.  Her husband took a couple out with his sword.  But in the end, there were to many.  No one could take this many people down.  The village chained both of them to a rock and held an axe over their necks.  Together?  Haleli had whispered.  Always.  The man managed to give her a wry smile.  Haleli knew she was dying as sharp pain reached her.  The last thing she saw was the sky, filled with clouds.

Away in the couple's tents, was a baby.  For a newborn it was awfully quiet.  It gazed into the sun, unnoticed by the people.  The men walked away, brushing their hands like nothing had happened.  The baby spoke it's first word.  It tilted it's head to the sky and said something unmistakable, true and real.  "Mamma?"

Dean Dovey flipped the pages of the book slowly.  One simple word came out.  Her mouth quivered, but she spoke, signaling the young lady next to her.  "No."

  AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Her head screamed for her to somehow claw her way out.  Her fingers raked at the walls, trying to escape her doom.  The looming black monster darted through the shadows, it's red eyes illuminating the darkness.  There was no way out.  She was trapped.  Lulu backed herself against the wall, hugging her legs tightly, curling into a ball.

The monster advanced to her slowly, it's eyes glowing with hunger and pride for catching it's weak prey.  It slid forward through the shadows, Chaos shifting through it's veins.  It approached her and howled, the sound echoing through the cavern.  It opened it's mouth, and Lulu could see dark drool making a small puddle on the floor.  She squeezed her eyes shut, hugging herself harder.

It lunged at her, it's teeth glinting sharply, ready to kill...

  The monster stopped.

Lulu opened her eyes, staring in frank amazement at the frozen monster.  She reached a compelled finger towards it, barely touching it's cold and chaotic skin.  Lulu slid her finger down it's scales, feeling strange heat pulsing through her veins.  The heat became stronger, and Lulu pulled away in worry.  The frozen monster's eyes opened, and it's body lit up like a star.  It growled and roared in pain, taking a step towards Lulu slowly.  It reached a spindly arm at the girl to touch her.  Then it exploded, sparkling white dust and flowers was all that was left of the creature.  Lulu opened her mouth, shocked-

And that was when she woke up.

Lulu was in her bed, sweating and shell shocked, panting like she had been in a fight or something.  Lulu pushed away a lock of lavender hair, her forehead glistened with sweat.  Slow breaths.  Deep breaths.  Lulu counted in her head slowly.  1, 2, 3 , 4 ,5.  She opened her eyes again and let out a sigh.  She was going to be late.  Her Mother was gonna kill her.

She rolled off the bed, brushing off the nightmare, or at least trying too, like it was just a normal dream.  But it had occurred yesterday, and the day before, and everyone knew that dreams were supposed to be random.  Or at least random in some sense.  But was it really a nightmare?  She wondered against her will.  I won, didn't I?  Lulu beat the thought out of her head and quickly changed into her school uniform.  She reached for a spindly comb and began to shove it through her stubbornly thick hair.  The thought came up again, and this time her body refused to ignore it.  Why?  It was a simple word, yet so infinite.  It always seemed to sliced it's way through her mind like a sword.  Who is that monster and why did it attack me?  How did I stop it with mere touch?

So many questions, yet no answers.  So many times, Lulu felt alone.

"LUANDRA!"  Her Mom's voice echoed through the room.  "Coming!"  She called, racing down the stairs to the kitchen in a rush.  She sat at the table, the two adults in front of her staring daggers at her like usual.  "Uhhh..."  Lulu stuttered.  "I'm just gonna... Eat now."  She gave them an awkward thin smile and pretended to be deeply interested in her scrambled eggs.

She could still feel their piercing gaze, though and jerked her head up slightly just to see to immediately wish she hadn't.  Her parents slick black hair was plastered to their skulls, somehow making them look even more frightening.  Their black, beady eyes scanned her and they sniffed disapprovingly at her.  Father spoke slowly.  "Where were you yesterday?"  He asked, eyeing Mom.

Lulu backed into her chair.  Yup, so dead.  "I was, um, at..."  She scanned the room, her eyes landing on the stubborn cat, Meisty.  "...The- pet food store, buying some new food for Meisty."  She said, far too overenthusiastic.  She noticed the suspicious glares and picked up the cat for added effect.  "See, look how much he loves me!"  She said, petting the house cat.  Meisty yowled in protest.  Lulu glanced at her parents, who looked even more uncomfortable now.  Her Mom had even raised a skeptical eyebrow and opened her mouth to speak.  Lulu quickly interrupted.  "Well, nice chatting with you, but I'm gonna be late for school, so see you in a little while.  Bye!"  She blurted out, then dashed out of the room.

Lulu was regretting going to school.  She let out another giant yawn and tried not to fall asleep.  "If we add the denominator to the variable, we get..."  Ughhhh.  She closed her eyes, hoping to fall asleep at this point.

A note landed on her desk and she peeked at it, unnoticed by the teacher.  This class is so boring.  Meet me at library after school?  -Nya

Lulu grinned.  She glanced at Nya, and nodded.  Nya grinned and gave her a thumbs up.  Then Lulu was deemed to be tortured by waiting as she half- listened to the teacher's lecture.

She darted out of the classroom as fast as she could.  Nya was waiting for her at the lockers by the time she had pushed her way through the gigantic crowd of students.  Nya smiled at her.  "Let's go."

The library wasn't far from the school, just a block or too away.  Every time Lulu skipped down the path towards the building, she felt like a kid again.  Truthfully, the library was the only tolerable thing in her life.  Parents who hated her, a grumpy good for nothing cat, a boring obscenely old school, all Lulu had in Gavaldon was her best friend and books.  Books.  It was just a word, but it still made her feel bumbling and excited every time someone said the word.  She could escape into the world of fantasy and cover up her boring and miserable life.

They were soon in the library in minutes, not that Lulu took much notice.  She was too busy staring at the hundreds of books lining the shelves like a wolf would look at a sheep.  The librarian smiled and greeted them.  "Pick out a book to read."  He encouraged them.  The library was gorgeous, from golden pillars holding the ceilings up to dirty brown endless shelves of worn out old books, and of course, the old velvet carpet that though had fading strands always looked bright when people sat on it to read.

Lulu gave the librarian a quick nod and raced over too a bookshelf, took out "The Tale of Sophie and Agatha," and began to read.  Nya smirked at her, but sighed and plopped next to her with "The Little Mermaid" in the end.

The Tale of Sophie and Agatha was about two girls from Gavaldon- back when it was considered a useless "Reader" town- who were chosen by the school master to go to the School for Good and Evil, but beautiful and kind Sophie is dropped in the School for Evil, and goth, grumpy Agatha into the school for good.  The girls must figure out a riddle and get back home again before it's to late, and during the process, find out that they were in the right schools all along.

In the end of this real story, Agatha and her prince become King and Queen of Camelot and Sophie becomes the new Dean of Evil.  Two happy endings.  One "The End."  Lulu had read the book a million times, but never got sick of it.  Two girls, trying to be best friends even though one was good and one was evil?  That was such a great story- but it must of been really hard in reality.

Lulu had known Sophie and Agatha, especially Agatha.  They were only two years older then her anyways.  Lulu had met Agatha when Lulu had been trying to protect a baby fox from two older boys, who were jabbing at it with a stick.  Lulu had thrust herself in front of the whimpering fox, shielding the small creature and took the hits from the sticks.  The boys just laughed at her, jeering her to protect the fox.  Lulu had fought back tears as they jabbed her harder, trying to pry her away from it.
Just like that, Agatha had stepped out of the bushes and had became her heroine.  Agatha didn't look like much, with her short black hair and big dark eyes and a usual scowl, but that day, Lulu learned just how much goodness she had in her heart.  "Hey, stop it!"  She had called to the boys.  They ignored her and continued poking Lulu with a stick.  Lulu closed her eyes as she tasted blood.  Agatha raised an eyebrow.  "Hey you ugly goons, stop it!"  That got their attention.  They turned towards her, menacing grins on their face's.  "What are you gonna do about it?"  The tallest one taunted her.  Agatha stepped forward slowly, lifted her hand, and punched the guy in the face.

Stunned, he doubled back, holding his lip in surprise.  Lulu saw fear flicker and his eyes and saw that his lip was bleeding as he signaled to his friends in a strangely high pitched voice.  "Retreat!"  He cried, and he and his friends fled into the village.  The baby fox climbed onto Lulu shoulder and cooed at Agatha, relief in it's eyes.  It nudged Lulu affectionately and nuzzled Agatha's leg.  Agatha gave the small creature a crooked smile and leaned down to pet it gently.

Lulu was lost for words.  "T-thank you..."  She had stuttered nervously.  Agatha touched her shoulder.  "It's not true you know... What they say about me being an evil witch."  She sighed, blowing her dark hair out of her face.  "In reality... I really don't want to be that person you know."  Agatha began to walk away, but glanced back at her.  "Sometimes- some people just assume."  Then she beamed at Lulu, or at least as good as she could do at a beam.  "I can tell that you won't be that kind of person."

As Agatha walked away, Lulu made a promise.  "I won't, Agatha.  I promise that I won't."

Lulu shook her head, lost in thought.  It was true that all of Gavaldon use to shun Agatha like they did to her foster mother, Callis, but now everybody knew that Agatha was far from a witch.  In fact, most people referred to her as a role model, or even a fairy tale princess.

Sophie was different.  Being Stephen's daughter, who was now the Mayor, she had been a beautiful girl who always had a smile on her face.  She was polite and kind to everyone, and even delivered cookies to Lulu's house every now and then.

But every time Sophie gave her a cheerful smile, Lulu could see something underneath it, far down, lurking under.  Something that was hidden.  Something hiding from daylight, deep inside Sophie's bright soul.  She had never had a close bond with Sophie, but Sophie seemed to like her.  "Hi Luandra!"  She'd tell Lulu, bumbling and excited.  She'd sit next to her in school.  "Why do the shadows dance around you like that?"  She had asked innocently.  Lulu had met her eyes.  "They're... My friends."

Sophie had looked confused, but then plastered a smile on her face, gave Lulu a wave, and darted off to her friends.  Lulu just smiled back awkwardly and ran to Nya, who was looking at Sophie curiously.  Nya beamed at Lulu when she had arrived, but then looked at her, confused.  "You never told me."  She had said.  "Why do the shadows follow you?"  Lulu had thought about that ever since she'd noticed it.  Never had she found an answer.  She frowned at her friend.  "I... I don't know."  Lulu stuttered.

Nya frowned, looking scared for a second.  Her expression vanished immediately, and turned into a cheerful grin.  "Let's go."  They wandered off like nothing had happened, but Lulu wondered how Nya really felt.

Lulu squinted and blinked.  Too many memories.  Too many thoughts flooded through her mind.  Lulu brushed it off slowly.  Just read the book!  Her hands trembled as she flipped the pages.  1: The Princess and the Witch...

Nya shook her gently.  "Lulu."  She ignored her.  "Lulu!"  Lulu concentrated on her book.  Nya looked really annoyed.  "LUANDRA JENI!"  Lulu looked up at her and rolled her eyes.  "Yes, Nyana Rien?"  Nya tapped her heel impatiently.  "Let's go!  It's getting late."  Lulu glanced out the window.  Nya was right.  The moon was rising, and the sky was beginning to darken.  Lulu pursed her lips.  She didn't want to go home and face her parents, but she would have to sooner or later.

She silently groaned, but stood up, turning to Nya anyways.  "You're right.  Let's go."

They hurried down the dark path, the houses sleek and small.  Lulu shivered as they passed the grave yard.  The house was now a memorial site for Agatha and Callis, but the graves still gave her the creeps.

Nya's house was closer to the library compared to hers, so Nya gave her a quick wave before she sneaked through the backdoor to get in her house.  Lulu nodded and continued down the street slowly, alone and slightly creeped out.
Lulu didn't exactly rush to get home, but she didn't walk, either.  When she reached her house, her eyes scanned the side door, wondering if there was a way to get it open.  She pulled on it, but it didn't budge.  She pulled harder, and it creaked at her as if annoyed.  Lulu glowered at the door and pulled it with all of the force she could muster.  First, the door creaked stubbornly.  Then heat began to coursed through her veins, the door glowing a lavender aura.  Lulu's eyes widened as it exploded in lavender light.

Lulu stepped back.  "No way."  The noise was louder then she expected.  Lulu could already hear her mom's feet pounding down the stairs.  "Luandra?!"  She yelled, coming closer.  Time seemed to stop for a second.  The door exploding, her mom's angry yell, what they would do if they found her, and the only instinct that seemed to come to Lulu was to run.

She bolted into the streets, heading straight for the Graveyard.  Lulu could here her mother and father's footsteps pounding as they raced after her.   "LUANDRA!  GET BACK HERE THIS INSTANT!!!"  Father yelled in his scratchy voice.  Lulu didn't answer and pushed people aside with an occasional "Excuse me!"  or "Sorry!"  Nervous, she glanced behind her.  Her parent's were far in the distance, panting to keep up with her.

She reached the graveyard, and went further and further in, hoping she would find a hiding spot.  Lulu could almost see her parents silhouettes now, coming at her fast.  Quickly, she scanned the area.  There!  Next to a dead cherry tree was an empty grave.  She darted in, hardly caring about getting her uniform all dirty.  She sighed in relief, then took a deep breath and braced herself.

A few seconds later, Lulu could hear her parents footsteps.  They arrived in the graveyard and paraded around.  "Do you think she's in here?"  Her mother's voice.  "Course.  Even she's not stupid enough to go into the endless woods...  And she'd surely get to the shield by now if she did."

More loud stomps.  "What would she be doing in here anyway though, Harold.  There are no places to hide here."  Lulu's father let out a laugh.  "Sara, I said she wasn't dumb enough to go in the woods.  I didn't say she wouldn't see the stupidity in going in the graveyard."  Dad?  Lulu felt a little hurt.  She knew that her parents didn't care for her as much as others, but she didn't realize they would consider her doing something so blunt.

Laughter died out and the couple searched the area again.  Lulu's heart nearly stopped when her mother studied the cherry tree, glancing around, yelling "Lulu, get out girl!"  It was almost like she was a dog.  Eventually her mother gave up and walked over to Harold.  "Can't find 'er anywhere.  What about you?"  Her father asked.  "Same.  Come on, let's go, she'll come home eventually."  Harold was quiet for a second.  "Meet ya at the house, I'm gonna do one last search for 'er."  Lulu groaned quietly.  Her father looked around, even in graves as he came closer and closer.  Lulu's mind flooded with fear, she was going to get herself caught!  As Harold stepped forward, Lulu moved backwards, further into the grave.  More footsteps.  Lulu took a breath and edged backwards.  The sounds of his shoes were pounding, closer and closer.  Lulu inched backwards more.  She didn't know why the grave was so big.  She just wanted to get away.

The father approached the grave slowly and began to scan the cherry tree.  Lulu quickly moved through the grave, the tunnel getting narrower.  Harold shook the branches to try to knock any creatures down, and Lulu pushed herself through the long tunnel, squeezing her body so that it fit.

The man turned towards the grave, scratching at the grass, and peered inside.  Lulu froze.  She knew her father could see her, and he surely would be able to get her out of here and punish her severely when they got home.  Not knowing what to do, Lulu turned and crawled deeper into the hole.  Harold's eyes widened and he shouted at her.  "Luandra!  Get back her this instant or you'll be sorry!"  Lulu tried to ignore him and went deeper.  The man's eyes filled with rage and he plunged into the grave after her.

Frantic, Lulu crawled faster, her fingernails digging into the dirt as she moved.  Her father struggled to get in, doing his best to climb after her, but was almost immediately unable because of the size of the tunnel.  "Luandra, there is obviously a dead end.  Come here.  NOW!"  Lulu frowned and continued.  What if he's right?  Surely there's a dead end here somewhere!  She shook her head.  No.  You can't think like that.  Just keep climbing.  The dirt became more ridged as she grasped the stones slowly.  Lulu could still hear her father's voice shouting at her, but all there was now were the faint echoes of a voice.  I'm getting somewhere!  I really am!  Happiness filled her, excitement replacing fear as she continued on her way.

Suddenly a wave of sensation passed through her, giving her a strange nauseous feeling, but it left almost immediately.  Lulu was puzzled, but gasped as she saw a light in the distance.  It really is leading to somewhere!  Faster and faster, the light approached until she saw trees, a forest, stretch in front of her.  Gasping, Lulu climbed out of the hole, her senses sharpening.  Around her were trees, both to her left and right.  Her stomach churned as she saw what was in front of her.  Two tall castles stretched over the horizon, a tower in the middle.  The first castle was white and pearly, looking like a fairy tale palace with it's glimmering gold turrets and it's crystal colored towers.  The second was black and gloomy, surrounded by a polluted looking moat, radiating fear and poison as the gleaming obsidian towers glowered at you.

She was shocked for the second time when she looked at her outfit.  Her school uniform was gone, and a replacement pink, frilly outfit with gold laces and pink rhinestone shoes to match, complete with a rose hair barrette magically put neatly in her lavender hair, and a white swan crest on her uniform.  Lulu froze.  Here she was, at a school she had read about ever since she could read.  Here she was, with the school uniform in the handbook that her parents had absolutely hated and threw out when they received one.  Even though she was the only one in Gavaldon who didn't fill out a admission form, here she was standing at the edge of the same school the admission form was for.

Here she was at the School for Good and Evil, in an Ever's uniform, crest and all.  Her heart skipped a beat.  She felt like she was in a dream, not in a real reality.  Am I an Ever?  Lulu dared herself to wonder.  A young fox nuzzled her leg.  Well, there's only one way to found out.  Blinking rapidly, she stepped inside the open gates of the school.

With a deafening bang, they closed behind her with a crash.  Shocked, Lulu turned around.  The silvery metal of the gates was bound by sharp steel, very much locked and would stay that way.  Lulu didn't even try to explode it, even though she was sort of on a roll of making things explode in vibrant colors of light.  I guess there's no turning back now.  She braced herself and stepped forwards.  Her new life was about to begin.
