Every person in the world desires to have a dream job. It is considered true happiness when someone does what he/she likes and earns money from it. However, a dream job is almost an unattainable ideal for most of the people. In the twenty first century, people have no opportunity to choose the job of their dream. The high level of competency makes them accept any offer that could cover their expenses. In modern society having a good job does not mean having a job that one likes. It means having a well-paid job in a big corporation that sweats its employees to complete exhaustion. Richard Sennett argues that a person’s identity is intimately tied to the work he or she does. I believe that this statement could have been true for a period of time when there was no competition, and people were able to choose their job according to their talents, passion, and understanding of their vocation. In my opinion, it is impossible in today’s society. The market dictates terms, and it is hard to stay independent and make choices in favor of a dream under such circumstances. In this paper, I would like to discuss this topic and persuade the reader that in modern American society, an individual’s identity does not play significant role in the career choice that is rather conditioned by the state of the market.

In order to develop a consistent argument, it is necessary to examine two sides of the question. For example, let us consider two corporations – Google and McDonalds. Both of these companies make billions of dollars annually and have thousands of people on the staff. However, these companies have completely different working conditions and corporate culture. For instance, everyone can work in McDonalds because the job in the company does not require some special skills. Many people work there because McDonalds offers them a stable salary that can save one from poverty. Although, a person has to work very hard to obtain some prestigious position in this company and has to follow strict rules of the company that are all written in a giant code of McDonalds. Otherwise, an employee can be easily fired. On the other hand, Google is a company that gives a great amount of freedom to its employees. People can make their own schedule that suits them, work in a manner they are convenient with, have rest whenever they need it without even leaving the company’s building. This issue is always highly discussed in various media essay topics. In addition, it is a very well-paid job. Some people think that Google Corporation is a heaven for an IT-worker. However, it is not completely true. It is not easy to get a job in Google. This is a dream job that requires a lot of efforts to be put in obtaining it. An individual that wants to work there has to be a great specialist in a narrow field and have a considerable experience and ambitions. Not everyone is able to meet such requirements even if it is their dream job. Personal identity does matter, but it is not a determinative factor in the choice of a job. It might help in some cases when an employer selects candidates on the basis of their personality and individual features. Nevertheless, most of the cases show that a person in need for money is more likely to accept any job offer that will allow him/her to pay the bills.

Analyzing the connection between work and person’s identity, it may be suggested that identity plays no significant role in the choice of a job. Most people examine the state of the market first and make a decision regarding the job relying on the most needed and well-paid specialization.
