Chapter 1

Legacy enterprise systems house documents and content which could be referred to as unstructured information. Structured information or information stored in databases and tables do exist but they serve a different branch of information management like data management solutions for instance. Common examples would include regular Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. These systems aren't often integrated leaving behind a great deal of "unstructured information". A good enterprise software solution company would envision linking structured information with unstructured information to offer holistic analytics solutions.

Legacy enterprise content management technologies are successful in automating first tier information such as information associated with mission-critical large scale processes. However, in order to get a holistic view of how the organization is performing, businesses must adopt new ways of interlinking information from every department that drive business processes. This problem could be addressed using Intelligent Information Management (IIM) principles.

The Association for Intelligent Information Management has provided a few general guidelines on how enterprise software development companies could structure information across the enterprise.

  • Content
A modular development approach that interlinks content or information from a central point of storage.
  • Processes
Tools that facilitate business process workflows could be performed through mobile applications that run on a framework allows user privilege and access controls
  • Analytics
All business information both structured and unstructured must be analyzed with machine learning technology.

In the present business landscape virtually every business maintains records and use some form of content. Digital transformation is taking place at breakneck speeds and intelligent information management will be vital to address the main challenges that arise from digital transformation, improving customer experiences and the work environment for employees to retain talent and reduce employee turnover.

IIM principles can give enterprises the right tool set that assist in classifying documents across the enterprise and provide actionable insights on how to improve the customer journey.
