Introduction

"Emma, you know you're only supposed to draw on the paper. How many times do I have to remind you?" I watched her slump into the kitchen with her head down. Stay strong Amelia, you know what is coming next. Damn it, again with those ocean eyes. Right on cue. "It's okay hun. Just be extra careful next time, please."

    "I'm sorry, I will mum."

"Run along and get ready for school we are both going to be late."

I could hear her fumbling up the stairs. Taking out the Clorox wipes I started to scrub the table. "What the hell...what did she draw with?" There are no permanent markers in the house for this reason. "Hey Emma! Come quick when your dressed." As her tiny self readily thudded down the stairs, I noticed that her drawing was of a bird's wings over and over again. What happened to my little girl drawing houses and rainbows? I grabbed a dingy tablecloth from the closet. "Where did you get permanent markers from? Did you take them from my desk at school? You know Em, if the other students see you take things from my desk they will think they are allowed to as well." She blankly gazed and nodded her head. It's early to bed tonight, for sure.

Emma never had to worry about tardys. "Hello class! Sorry we are late, traffic today..." As Emma took her seat I noticed how unusually quiet my class was. They were all peering at the board behind me. When I turned around to see what they were looking at I was froze with familiarity and fright. Emma was looking at the board the same way as the other children. The eerie silence told me they were not messing around. I ran to the neighboring classroom and saw Mr. Parker facing his winged covered board. The news was on his classroom TV showing children from China and Africa drawing the wings as well. Shouting his name through the thick locked door, he slowly turned to me and mouthed 'RUN' but stood frozen as if he could not do what he was wanting me to. "What about Emma?!" I panicked out loud. Stumbling across the hall I peered into my class room to see that the children were covering every surface with the wings. Noticing Emma, I yelled for her to come to the door. She looked up at me and her eyes were empty. Then, she ran to the door and slammed a paper covered in wings onto the door window and on it was a single word 'RUN'. My ocean eyes started to swell as I mouthed 'I love you' and her stare remained blank. As I ran outside to my car, I noticed the sky was turning a purple black.
